4 out of 5 eggscritical layout for programming, repair free

Pros: this has the split-right-shift and \| to right of that. makes programming and commandline FAR easier and safer than with a standard 104-key keyboard. I bang on my keyboards and this thing has been pretty good, nice solid feel I like.
this is the UK 105 layout with split right shift and \| to right of shift.

Cons: had to repair 2 keyboards of 4 had spacebar needed to be redone. shipping cost $18, repair cost free wand they pay the cost of shipping back, so that' nice. I think it's why they call it the lifetime series, they will repair it for a lifetime?
a large flat rate Usps box should work fine $17.90, I used an apple cardboard box to handle multiple keyboards.

2 out of 5 eggsLooks great, terrible to use!

Pros: Appearance and layout are easily 5 eggs. I picked it out because it's got a nice, plain, old-school look that I feel at home with. I'd hoped it would have that old-school feel, or at least be as good as my old, (and I do mean old, it was a Packard Bell) rubber dome board. That, and I'd chickened out buying an expensive mechanical board.

Cons: The keys are so hopelessly wimpy. I didn't read the description of the "Ergo Tech" closely enough. All the letter keys must be the lowest resistance at ~35 grams, and wobbly to boot. If all the keys felt like the stiffer F1-12 and NumPad keys, I would be fine with that and give a 5 egg review for the price. As it is, it feels like typing on a sponge or texting with gloves. I keep hitting keys by mistake. Now that I'm getting used to it a bit, and not hitting the keys quite so hard, I'm missing several strokes because they have a decent bit of travel and only register at the very bottom.

Other Thoughts: I mostly game and don't type a whole lot. Once I'm in a game I can forget how bad the keys feel, but typing is so bad, I've already ordered a mechanical board. It'll be my first one, hopefully I like it. At ~35$ it's not quite worth the effort an RMA, if I can even get one.

3 out of 5 eggsOkay

Pros: Keyboards work for a while. The most used key will fail first. This keyboard worked for a long while. Plain solid keyboard with no shortcut keys. Most of the keys don't torque, so they feel crisp. There is no gaming ghosting. Key depression is rather long.

Cons: The keys that failed first were left ctrl, and right numpad +...but this thing with broken keys feels so much better than 1X$ buck JEE keyboards... that i just keymapped around the use broken keys for a while. I am buying another-- not cheap, not perfect.

4 out of 5 eggsLess typing mistakes!

Pros: As a VERY picky keyboardist, the more I type on this thing, the fewer keystroke mistakes I make. Simple, no frills, keyboard that makes me want to type on it. Have typed on old keyboards with a better final "thunk" at the end of the stroke, but this puppy is not bad and won't upset you. Also very quiet.

Cons: Only four stars since it isn't absolutely "the best" keyboard I've ever used. Right hand Shift Key could be wider.

Other Thoughts: Nice to see that KeyTronic still makes good stuff.

5 out of 5 eggsThe best keyboard value

Pros: I now have three of these keyboards, one for work, one for home and one as a spare. IMO these are the best value keyboards on the market--no silly multimedia keys, a great feel, and a long key lifetime. The first one I bought four years ago is still going strong with no bouncing keys. (Back then it was called the 'LIFETIME' series, but it looks identical to this 'CLASSIC' series, even down to the 'LIFETIME' logo in the top right corner.) I use one of these PS/2 keyboards as well on my laptop with a USB adapter and it works fine.

Cons: Although the lettering on each key is molded in, it does fade over time. Not so much that you can't see it, but more of a medium gray as opposed to white. The difference is noticeable when you compare the CAPS LOCK key to the SHIFT key, for example.

Like most keyboards, the biggest impediment to long life is the amount of cruft (dust, hair, etc.) that gather in them over time. Not much you can really do about that. That's why I keep a spare.

Other Thoughts: It bugs a number of other reviewers (see the USB version), but I find the placement of the '\|' key to be one of the best features of this line of keyboards. In Linux (my primary OS) and in programming the bar symbol '|' is used constantly, and I find that a simple 'roll' of my little finger from the shift key to the '\|' key is all it takes to make one. Great for fast touch-typists like me.

It would be nice if Keytronic made a combined PS/2 / USB version of this keyboard (by supplying an adapter). I still find PS/2 keyboards to be more reliably detected and less troublesome to get working properly than USB versions. Nonetheless, the handwriting is on the wall, and like it or not PS/2 ports are going the way of the floppy disk. It would be nice if my choice wasn't PS/2 or USB, but PS/2 and USB.

3 out of 5 eggsNothing special IMHO

Pros: It works and is black so it matches the rest of my equipment.

Cons: I was expecting a lot more based on what I have heard about these keyboards and the price. Overall, there is nothing special about this keyboard that I can see or feel. I feel like I wasted my money on this purchase.

5 out of 5 eggsKeytronic Works

Pros: Great keyboard, wonderful 'feel'!

Cons: The price... but I buy them anyways because they feel good to type on and they NEVER stop working.

Other Thoughts: Keytronic keyboards will probably outlast your computer.
