5 out of 5 eggsnice keyboard

Pros: fantastic button/trackball layout, battery life is excellent!, i've never had a problem with range at 20+ feet.

most comfortable wireless combo unit ive used. perfect size. girlfriend and mother adapted quickly to layout and trackball (which shocked me)

worked out of box with my linux distros... no setup needed.

Cons: trackball eventually becomes useless over time...

Other Thoughts: it would be nice if you could remove and clean the trackball.

2 out of 3 units trackballs stopped working after a couple years of heavy use. (my 3rd unit has much lighter use and still works properly)

we abuse these things. they've been dropped, kicked, thrown, tossed off the bed many times. spilled stuff on them. usually the batteries just fly out on crashing...you put them back in and youre back in business... (batteries are taped down now!)...i sure as heck got my moneys worth out of these things.

3 out of 5 eggsWorks But Range Is Poor

Pros: Great keyboard and trackball for navigating a smart TV screen...absolutely the best I could find for a good interface. When it works, it works well. A keyboard with a smart TV is a must have in my opinion.

Cons: Range is WAY too short. Sitting only 10 feet away, I had lots of trouble with connection. Changing TV USB ports with the dongle helped. Still misses a beat every now and then. My smart TV is an LG and I connect it to my main computer wirelessly for movie streaming.

Other Thoughts: I did get better results by switching the dongle to a different USB port on the TV. Not sure why that would make a difference but it did. Perhaps there is some interference.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Neat keyboard as long as it works.

Cons: Had the keyboard two weeks when it went crazy. A back stroke and several other keys would make the total screen resized to a different screen resolution or cause some other problem. I did not even return it for a refund. I had to put one egg for rating but it does not deserve that.

5 out of 5 eggsWorth every cent.

Pros: Good range
Batteries last a long time (1+ year)
Good keyboard layout.
Trackball works good.
Light.
Cheap.

Cons: Nothing. Yup nothing.

Other Thoughts: I have owned 4 or 5 of these over the years for my various HTPC setups. So far they have worked great. These usually go for $40-50 and outperform even $80 ones I have bought. Out multiple years and muptiples one I can honestly say none have died on me and i rarely have to replace batteries. I am overall very happy with these.

I would recommend these over more expensive/heavier models which didn't last as long.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid performer

Pros: Sturdy, well made, good range
Great tech support!

Cons: little hard to get used to mouse

Other Thoughts: I picked it because of the track ball, but the mouse click is on the left side. In retrospect I think a trackball and clicker on the left would be best, but no one makes that.

Occassionally I wish I had a lighted keyboard, but price wise they are not justifiable.

5 out of 5 eggsVery Good HTPC KB

Pros: Size
battery life
ease of use
mouse / keyboard combined

Cons: trackball isn't the greatest

Other Thoughts: Definitely not a keyboard you'd want to use for couch gaming but it gets the job done and the price is fantastic!

4 out of 5 eggsIOMega HTPC Keyboard.

Pros: Makes surfing and navigating an HTPC a breeze. Slick angles and rubber feet/sides.

Cons: Weird right side shift key. Unnecessarily large enter key. Mouse ball is not always smooth.

Other Thoughts: I have dropped it three times and the batteries flew out every time, but didn't phase the board.

After 10 minutes of what IT thinks is un-activity it will put the PC to sleep. WMC won't allow it, but streaming Pandora through a browser can get old quick...

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for HTPC, with one flaw for me

Pros: I've had two of these keyboards on separate HTPC's for more than two years, and they perform as expected. This model has a very ergonomic trackball and left/right mouse button setup. Range is great, even through a cabinet door. Battery life is exceptional without having to deal with on/off switches. The size is small enough without requiring special batteries that might not last or can't be easily replaced. Overall, this is one of the strongest HTPC keyboard mouse combinations with a solid build and the basic features in mind. Seems like the price at $50.00 is higher than when I purchased mine. Once you get used to using the track ball, it works fine. Quick re-positioning of the thumb is needed to cover a lot of screen, which is easy after some time. For me, the easy use of the track ball right/left mouse is the most important feature to "get right" and battery system that works.

Cons: Nothing that matters, except that the price should hopefully go back down to the $35.00 range. Backlighting might be useful but I've never found it necessary. The volume buttons on the keyboard are in the opposite order of what you would normally see on a keyboard.

Other Thoughts: My two keyboards get used a lot every day. I have a special needs kid who enjoys our movie library, netfix, games, etc. This keyboard can take some abuse -- dropping, banging, etc. However, I have finally lost a few keys from the keyboard. I just bought a replacement model -- the IOGear GKM681R, as this model has a chicklet keyboard, which will likely last longer.

4 out of 5 eggsAkward shape

Pros: I am actually using this keyboard to type this review. The built in track ball mouse and adjustable dpi settings are the "radest" features I've ever seen in a keyboard. This keyboard has some serious range. It goes nicely if you use a HDTV as your monitor for you PC and like to sit at a distance.

Cons: They keys just feel crammed together. I went from regular sized keyboard to this and it feels awkward in my hands. I will get used to it, but it's something to point out that this is a very small keyboard when compared to standard keyboard.

As for the trackball, which is the feature that drew me to purchase this keyboard, I am slightly disappointed. The ball itself is a very light, hollow, cheap plastic ball that doesn't do a very good job of accurately moving the pointer.

There are reviews that say if you get the mouse driver for another product from IOGEAR, then it will fix the problem with the mouse being erratic and jumpy. Well, that's not true. Or at least it wasn't for me. However, I did find something that permanently solved the issue with the mouse.

I only recommend doing this is if you are not afraid to open electronic devices and possibly voiding your warranty. Simply remove the screws to the keyboard (don't forget the ones under the rubber grips). Then remove the plastic track ball in the keyboard and use a fine grit sand paper to gently sand the surface of the track ball. Wipe it clean with a cloth.

Now that the ball is has a rough surface, I have not noticed any jumping and I have much better performance. If installing that driver did not work for you (which I doubted it would have worked from the start) then you can modify your track ball physically to perform the way it should. But be careful, don't go damaging your product if you don't feel comfortable taking apart your keyboard.

Other Thoughts: I wish it had a number pad.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Keyboard

Pros: Key response is great. Ergonomic design for holding with both hands like a steering wheel or controller while standing, moving, or sitting in a chair without desk space. All around excellent keyboard. I've bought 3 or 4 of these over the course of few years. No Issues ever experienced with reception.

Cons: dust builds up over time eventually leading to less accurate trackball response. This isnt really a con as its natural this will occur being that trackball is constantly touched and rolls that dust internally and the trackball spins in place. This is the con of trackball design in general. Its the trade off for not needing to push a mouse across desk space. When this issue of dust build up occurs, theres no need to contact manufacturer or think the keyboard has met its end. Simply turn it off (power button underneath), remove screws with phillips head screwdriver, turn keyboard right side up again, lift cover off keyboard and set aside and pick up the trackball. With a q-tip wet with rubbing alcahol, wipe the area the trackball rests in. (careful cleaning the little bearings trackball rotates on). Clean the trackball itself with a wet paper towel or another q-tip while holding it. Return trackball to its resting position, return top keyboard cover, turn over and install screws again. Power on. Keyboard like new.

Other Thoughts: Best keyboard ever purchased for use with htpc. Its shape allows natural feel when holding. Don't feel confined to a desk in order to use PC. Right hand thumb controls the trackball while left hand thumb can left/right click. When typing, simply rest keyboard on lap. (I don't know how safe this is in terms of EMF exposure. Keep that in mind regarding any electronic devices. I have been meaning to learn more about this.) This keyboard should continue to be manufactured and sold.
