3 out of 5 eggsneed some better quality control

Pros: Form factor is fantastic for htpc use
Well laid out design for right handed use.
Multiple mouse buttons in clever locations.
Scroll wheel.
Great feel of mini trackball.
Pocket to carry wireless usb connector.
Windows key, and shortcut keys.

Cons: No on off switch like the GKM561R
A backlight for the keyboard switch to toggle on and off like the GKM571R.
See individual device complaints below.
Quality of signal and assembly problems.

Other Thoughts: I've owned two of these and really like the track mouse and form factor. I've owned all of Iogear's htpc keyboards, and have had lots of experience with this model.
Some problems I had were:
1. With the first one I received the multimedia keys on the sides were upside down and backwards. the correct icon for the task, but clearly mean to be place on the other side of the keyboard where they would follow the contour of the larger case.
2. The USB wireless connector fell apart in my fingers pulling it out of a USB slot. Nothing special, not much strain, may have unplugged it 3 or 4 times. When I wrote to get a replacement (buy or under warranty) I never heard back from the company.
4. The second one I have owned now for 3 days. the problems of the first one are gone, however the signal will not go more than 6 inches for the mouse. The keyboard will work 8 feet away, but the mouse stops unless adjacent to the USB adapter

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for choosing IOGEAR and we apologize for your experience. Please email us with a phone number to contact you at support@iogear.com. We will be more than happy to contact you with quality service and process an RMA. Your comments will be forwarded to the product manager. Once again, thank you for choosing IOGEAR.

4 out of 5 eggsIOGEAR GKM681R

Pros: Range is good. I keep it in my living room for my Media Center. Furthest I can get is ~ 13 ft, line of sight. It always connects even from max distance. Unit is small, but not so small that it's clumsy for big handed folk. Left and right click button placement works out really well with the way you'd naturally grip it. (think game controller bumper buttons) Nice multimedia keys, makes pausing, FF, Rewind, etc a breeze. The trackball is high quality, and very accurate.

Cons: This is not meant to be a "standard" keyboard, i.e., one that you would use on a normal workstation. It would be a bit awkward for that. Also, and maybe I just need to adjust a setting somewhere, but it goes to "sleep" awfully quick. And it only takes a second to wake up again, but sometimes that second is annoying.

Other Thoughts: Unit is really intended to be a MC keyboard, and for that, it is awesome.I mentioned the range before, I should also add that I have the dongle on a 3 ft USB cable and routed from back to front so the dongle faces toward the living room. I did not test the range with the dongle just plugged straight into the back.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks as advertised

Pros: Inexpensive.
Works well with my Samsung 'smart' BlueRay player.
Small (takes-up little space on the coffee table).
Light weight.

Cons: Hard to pick-up without accidently bumping side-mounted keys (until you get used to it).
Wish the keys were underlit, so I could see them better in the darkened room.

Other Thoughts: Bought this to use with the WebBrowser built-into my new BlueRay DVD player, so that I didn't have to screw-around with the on-screen pseudo-keyboard (using remote's arrow keys) . . . yuk! This little keyboard makes it MUCH easier to fill-in text fields (and to fly-around the screen clicking links) than using the remote.

4 out of 5 eggsit works

Pros: it's been working well for almost 8 months (as of the time i'm writing this) on my HTPC. trackball hasn't needed cleaning yet. lots of hotkeys. haven't had to change the batteries yet.

Cons: it's kind of small so it can be a little uncomfortable to type normally with it.
hot keys are placed a bit awkwardly. can't tell you how many times me or my family has hit one of them just going to pick the keyboard up. the trackball sensor will go to sleep after a little while of no use. it saves battery but you'll have to click a mouse button to get it to wake back up.

Other Thoughts: it does the job well enough and i haven't had any problems with connectivity or range.

4 out of 5 eggsGood but...

Pros: Good layout
Build quality seems ok
Perfect size for HTPC

Cons: Range (without USB extension cable)

Other Thoughts: I thought this was terrible when first purchased as the range was about 4-5 foot. I read other reviews and tried turning off all other 2.4Ghz devices with no effect. Was going to RMA it but then bought a $4 USB extension cable as a last ditch effort. Wow, even though the cable moved the usb dongle 1ft to the left and not any closer to where I sit, I now get around 20ft range.
My recommendation? Get the keyboard but not without a USB extender.
Other than the above, this is now perfect for a living room HTPC setup.

5 out of 5 eggsGood keyboard

Pros: Very good HTPC keyboard at a good price

Cons: It is smaller then your average keyboard but good for the casual typer

Other Thoughts: I got this over a year ago for my HTPC. It has worked very well with good range. The kids have dropped it many times including a drop from about 5 feet high. The mouse ball came out but was easy to snap back into place.

5 out of 5 eggsI love it!

Pros: Shoulder buttons for mouse buttons and the metal track ball work really well together. Works from across the room, about 10 feet. No software to install on Windows 7.

Cons: It doesn't sit evenly on a flat surface. Like one of the rubber feet should be longer. I've tried switching them around, but it appears that the whole thing is uneven. It rocks when typing.

1 out of 5 eggsAww Man

Pros: Nice size, overall a great attempt.

Cons: Trackball worked for less than 2 weeks. Now it chooses when it wants to work. I should have done more research before I made this purchase. Wasted $40....

Manufacturer Response:

First, thank you for choosing IOGEAR and we apologize for your experience. The product should not behave as you described. Since the unit is backed by IOGEAR's 3 year warranty feel free to contact our customer support at 1-866-946-4327 or email us: support@iogear.com. Again, thank you for choosing IOGEAR.
