2 out of 5 eggsPoor engineering, not worth the price tag.

This review is from: Rosewill Apollo RK-9100xBBR Blue Backlit Mechanical Keyboard

Pros: Overall, the keyboard is a solid build and functions as it should...like a keyboard. You push buttons, they do things. It's backlit, it uses cherry MX switches, and the keycaps pull off nicely and clean easily. Pretty standard stuff.

Unfortunately, that's about all it has going for it.

Cons: The software is awful, the finish on the keys is very prone to making the keys look greasy, and I've had 2 of them so far and they've both totally failed on me. Herein is my year-long history with Rosewill, and the sub par quality of their keyboards and customer service:

I got my first RK-9100 almost a year ago, it lasted a good 6 months before I started noticing the backlight flickering, which then lead to the device unplugging and re-plugging itself in rapidly. As it turns out, the USB cabling under the nice braiding was shoddy. I called Rosewill and they gladly RMA'd the product outside of Newegg's RMA timeline. I shipped it back in its original packaging without issues and received a replacement very promptly.

Knowing that the previous keyboard had issues, I kept the packaging from the new one, as well as all the materials that came with the keyboard. This time around it only took a month or so and the keyboard began exhibiting the same issues the last one had. Unfortunately this time it was during my 24 hour livestream for Extra Life to raise money for sick kids. Embarrassing for me, and for Rosewill.

This time I decided to just get a refund, while working with Rosewill I discovered that my retail box was gone (only to later find it under my couch, doh!) and the customer service rep was very rude about helping me, but he did make an exception so that I could still return the product even without the UPC/Retail packaging. I was told there would be a note put on my account in case I "try and do this again" and that "normally they don't allow this". Well, Rosewill, normally when you charge 125$ for a keyboard, it lasts longer than a year.

I am now anxiously awaiting my Newegg store credit so I can pick up the Corsair Vengeance K70.

Other Thoughts: Rosewill isn't a bad company, they were accomodating for the most part and understanding of my plight, aside from the one guy who made me feel like I did something wrong for having an issue with their product. They make some pretty decent other parts too - namely cases and PSUs. I won't be purchasing any of their gaming / input peripherals in the future however.

1 out of 5 eggsBack it went...follow up review

This review is from: Rosewill Apollo RK-9100xBBR Blue Backlit Mechanical Keyboard

Pros: I wrote a glowing review on 9/1/2014 for this keyboard. Imagine my disdain when three days after that review was posted it started malfunctioning by duplicating key presses.

Now, I know it is made by Max keyboard and I have owned a QuMax X-Armor keyboard nearly identical to this one but the Rosewill added the blue backlighting and braided cables, etc. I really wanted to like this keyboard and since I had a previous positive experience with the QuMax I figured this was a safe buy at a good price.

Wrong.

Cons: See above and below.

Other Thoughts: I demoted this keyboard in my follow up review to 1 egg. If it cannot perform the most basic task it was designed for and put the correct characters on my monitor then it should get 0 eggs but I could not rate it that low.

I since went with a Poseidon Z Brown switch edition which has had no issues of any kind, cost less, and has identical key press feel.

Unfortunate that I don't get the wrist wrest, braided cable, or rubberized coating but none of that matters if the keyboard does not work right.

5 out of 5 eggsHappy on Linux

This review is from: Rosewill Apollo RK-9100xBBR Blue Backlit Mechanical Keyboard

Pros: It works great on my Linux Mint 17 box. The backlighting mode adjustment works, switching into gaming mode works, and the media keys work with Rhythmbox without any plugins.
As far as the keyboard's physical attributes go, I'm coming from an IBM Model M which recently died, and this is a worthy successor.
The backlighting is well focused on the keys. Translucency is excellent and smooth on all keys. The braided cable is a welcome upgrade, and the connection point to the keyboard is robust. I found the included ports (especially the headphone jack) to be surprisingly handy. Excellent mix of minimal bezel, solid weight, and correct leading edge height.
I find the Cherry Browns to be the best mix for everyday use, although this is a personal choice.

Cons: A couple of very minor design considerations:
1) The NumLock / CapsLoc / "G" LEDs are much brighter and can't be dimmed.
2) The "Rosewill" logo stamped on the front is whiter and more prominent than the nice subtle text and graphics elsewhere on the keyboard; it is an unfortunate private labeling choice by Rosewill for an otherwise elegant product.

Other Thoughts: I've not used the included software.
The keys begin at leading edge of the keyboard (this is the right way to make a keyboard in my opinion) so you are going to want a wrist rest. I didn't like the plastic wrist rest that was included, I prefer a gel or other soft wrist rest.

3 out of 5 eggsSolid Keyboard - Malfunctions constantly

This review is from: Rosewill Apollo RK-9100xBBR Blue Backlit Mechanical Keyboard

Pros: I picked up this keyboard for a new build in January of 2014, I was really impressed with the build quality and the overall weight of the keyboard. No flexing and the components are great quality. The brown key switches are just what I wanted as far as noise/responsiveness.

Cons: This keyboard constantly malfunctions in that I need to unplug and re-plug in the USB port to get it to resume functioning. Also, the 3rd and 4th brightness settings often result in a rapid flickering that can't be fixed unless I unplug and re-plug in the USB again.

I have tried to remedy this by using different USB ports but nothing seems to work, perhaps the connection quality of the USB male end under the braided cable is bad. Either way, unacceptable when other keyboards out there beat it in features and price point right now. Wish I would have just waited.

Other Thoughts: Rosewill usually makes good middle-of-the-road quality PC parts but I really think they are slipping with this one. Should have just waited for the Ducky Shine 3 to come back into stock in the states.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic

This review is from: Rosewill Apollo RK-9100xBBR Blue Backlit Mechanical Keyboard

Pros: Great, reliable... Spilled a drink on it within first five hours of ownership and it still functions 100% nearly a year later. Love the backlit keys, good shade of blue. Matches my whole set up. Mechanical keys are where it's at. Also fancy textured/colored replacement keys for WASD is a nice touch.

Cons: Little bit noisy, but is to be expected with mechanical keys

5 out of 5 eggsOutstanding keyboard

This review is from: Rosewill Apollo RK-9100xBBR Blue Backlit Mechanical Keyboard

Pros: This is the fourth mechanical keyboard I have owned. This one is outstanding, and nearly identical to one I had before...the QuMax X-Armor by iOne. That keyboard was the same switches, build quality, and even has the same rubberized texture but did not have the backlighting nor the extra media connections like USB and the pass through audio. I sold the X-Armor a while back and regretted the decision. I have also tried the Poseidon Z Blue Switch (not Cherry) keyboard and did NOT like it due to the key switch quality. A SteelSeries keyboard 6vG2 also did not make the quality grade due to squeaky keys and the fact it only worked when it wanted to.

But, I digress. Here are the pros of this keyboard:

1. Made by Max Keyboard as other reviewers have pointed out. They are highly reputable.
2. Real Cherry MX Brown switches and trust me there is no substitute for Cherry switches despite the marketing claims from other companies.
3. Nice and not overdone blue backlighting.
4. Consistent key quality, with no squeaks and no build issues in general.
5. Rubberized texture on the palm rest and chassis (but not the keys themselves).
6. Comes with a key puller and orange WASD keys that I did not bother with.
7. Audio and USB pass through that I also do not bother with...I just wanted a rock solid mechanical keyboard with blue lighting. I do not believe the audio pass through would do anything for my audio quality and the front of the case is only a foot away anyway.
8. Heavy...definitely won't move around on you.
9. Extremely thick braided cable...quality all around.

Cons: None except perhaps price, but you get what you pay for. I could do without the Rosewill branding...they should put that on the bottom because quite frankly I think the name "Rosewill" and the font used are out of place on this otherwise beautiful piece of hardware.

Other Thoughts: I might give the built in USB hub a shot, but it is USB 2.0 and I am spoiled by USB 3.0 and have converted everything over to that, so perhaps or perhaps not...

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Nice design, back light is adjustable

Cons: Key click sounds are a little louder than I was hoping for which is why I couldn't give this four eggs.

5 out of 5 eggsVery Very Nice

This review is from: Rosewill Apollo RK-9100xBBR Blue Backlit Mechanical Keyboard

Pros: Good sturdy quality. The backlit keys are very clear and easy to see. Decent variety of illumination levels. I really like the USB ports and headphone and mic ports. Those are a nice addition.

Cons: The keys with a different shift-status character have the two different characters right next to each other (as opposed to on top of one another). I don't like that, but I think I understand why it was done. The blue LEDs are above the switches, so that's where the illumination is concentrated most. Still, I think they could have spread the characters further from center instead of being right next to each other.
Also, a minor point, I realize the Scroll Lock key is hardly ever used, but I still wish there were a light for it like there is for Caps Lock and Num Lock.
(I'm not trying to sound petty with these cons, but, If I'm going to drop $140 on a keyboard, I'm going to be pickier than usual.)

Other Thoughts: This is my first mechanical keyboard. I think I'm spoiled on them now! I love the "klack" of the keys.
I think I'm glad with having gone with the Cherry MX Brown switches. Because of my many years of using membrane-based keyboards, I tend to push much harder than necessary. It's taken me a while to get used to the "tactile bump".
