SteelSeries has chosen 20 of the most commonly used keys in games in the anti-ghost key list:
- 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
- Q, W, E, R, A, S, D, F
- Left-Ctrl
- Left Shift
- Space bar
- The four arrow keys

There’s no need to install software of any kind in order to use the Apex. Without software many features will work including disabling of the windows key and more. However, for the full experience and for the gamers who want really advanced customization options, the Apex is supported by SteelSeries Engine technology.

4 out of 5 eggsGood gaming keyboard

Pros: Has lots of programmable macro keys. I love that you can configure each zone to light up differently. On board media keys and build in usb hub

Cons: Membrane keyboard. Using a mechanical keyboard makes such a huge difference

1 out of 5 eggsAvoid

Pros: Pretty lights

Cons: No documentation, no support, non-intuitive.

Other Thoughts: Avoid this product like the plague.

For a keyboard that boasts complex programmable functionality you would think they would have something in writing or on the web on how to program it. Nope. It's all guesswork, unless, perhaps, you're already experienced at this. If you want to make any changes or assign any actions to the keys you really need to spend hours guessing at what combination of inputs will accomplish what you want. On my keyboard the 'L3' key has somehow become 'Deactivated.' Despite numerous efforts I can't reactivate the key to its original function.

The company can't even send a requested 'password reset' so you can log into your account and ask a question or register a complaint.

The pretty lights aren't worth the hassle. Go elsewhere for a programmable keyboard.

2 out of 5 eggsCould be so much more

Pros: Great LED customization options.
Looks and feels like a good keyboard.
A lot of customizable keys.
Two extra USB slots that can come in really handy.

Cons: One word, Software.
This keyboard would be worth the money it cost to buy if the software wasn't complete and utter trash. Every other game I download and install breaks their software one way or another, and fixing it is usually frustrating, time consuming, and not worth it. I also have a SteelSeries mouse and have given up any thoughts of having working, well written SteelSeries software. It just is not going to happen. If you really want those extra macro keys to always work forever, better go find a different keyboard.

Other Thoughts: If you want a cool keyboard and never plan to ever put anything on your computer ever, then this keyboard is great for you! However if you plan on using this keyboard for gaming, or on a computer that you'll be doing, really anything on, there are better options for better prices with MUCH better software.

3 out of 5 eggsAverage

Pros: It matched all the specifications. Love the lights

Cons: Some grease marks or something on spacebar when opened. Also my left shift button, a critical key in gaming, is not as sensitive as it should be. The button can be pressed but the shift action wont work.

Other Thoughts: I most likely got a low end quality, and most likely used, keyboard.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid.

Pros: -Extremely well built
-LEDs are bright, yet not overbearing.
-It just plain looks good, even the SteelSeries logo is placed in a way that is unobtrusive and appealing to the eye. The contrast from matte to shiny black plastic looks amazing.

-The keys are very satisfying to type on.
-Easily customizable macro keys/color/everything
-Per-application Profile switching
-Very nice USB cable, it definitely doesn't feel like this thing is going to give out anytime soon

Cons: -A little large, but all in all it works out well for a desktop setup. The extra keys make up for it.

Other Thoughts: Was choosing between this and a logitech G19s. While this one doesn't come with an LCD scree, I feel that its performance is superior (I've heard reports of the G19s keys being 'squishy' and otherwise hard to type on) and for $100 cheaper, it's a great buy.

4 out of 5 eggsPretty good!

Pros: Beautiful lights, lots of buttons, firm keys, and good software.

Great design and solid hardware.

Cons: Rather large learning curve, and can be a little annoying if you're not used to side keys and such. After a week or two I was able to navigate fine without looking.

Ghost keys just... don't seem to work. I find that in games I used to be able to play and use multiple functions at one, are now requiring me to stop one action and begin the others. It says that the typical keys, WSADQEZXC etc are ghost enabled, but this doesn't seem to be the case. Have tried installing latest drivers and software, and no fix.

Other Thoughts: Surely at this price, a small patch for the ghost function would be worth Steelseries's reputation. This is so close to a great keyboard, but needs just a little more.

5 out of 5 eggsAPEX lighted Steelseries Keyboard

Pros: This is the baddest most awesome keyboard in existance in the PC world. I have tried all of the highest rated but I am telling you GET THIS APEX KEYBOARD! Love the lights and different colors and combinations of what you want it to do for you. This is my 3rd one I am buying because my family loves mine so I had to get one for my Wife and Grand Daughter.

Keys are so smooth and it is made with high strength graphite steel. It looks like a 500.00 keyboard. It is so useful at night when I have my lights turned off in the room. Very entle on the eyes and you can adjust color brightness.

Cons: None. The guy that says hus "S" key is sticking I have not had that problem.

Other Thoughts: Newegg is awesome!

5 out of 5 eggsSteel Series APEX keyboard

Pros: This is the best soothest neatest looking key board period. It is heavy duty with very little plastic. I love the light colors and you can change them into any configeration you want to at anytime. My Wife spilled a glass of water on it by accident and when she fried it I was lost without it. Ordered another one the next day and 2 days later Newegg delivered the product. I would have paid 300.00 for this key board if I had to. give this a 5 star plus rating. In closing Newegg is the only place I buy from because they rock in every department. Building a new computer and just paid for and ordered the new ASUS Maxium VII forular mother board and the new 4.0 Haswell intel CPU. Will let you know how that flies later. Take my advice get this keyboard.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: As I said I love Newegg!

1 out of 5 eggsOK... while it works

Pros: Flashy cosmetics
Macro Customization

Cons: I bought this board for my new gaming setup, and ALMOST liked it at first. It looked cool, had an intimidating presence, and (I thought) would be good for gaming along-side my Razer Naga (which I adore).

I soon realized however, that this keyboard has some serious flaws. First off, some combinations of more than 2 keys cannot be pressed in unison (the third simultaneous keypress wont be registered). This is particularly annoying for some common gaming key combinations (such as "W" "Q", and "X").

I also noticed some latency issues that seemed to increase or decrease intermittently.

Worst of all, after only a few months of use, the "S" and "1" keys for some reason both started typing "1s" or "s1" when pressed. This makes the board virtually useless for anything from simple word processing to gaming,

This lead me to quickly realize how lacking SteelSeries is in the customer support department.

I may have gotten a defective keyboard and my RMA request with SteelSeries is still "pending", but even still, because of my experience with this keyboard I will not be buying any other SteelSeries products ever again.
