2 out of 5 eggsOwn the default version for 3 years

Pros: Frees up the 2 USB 2.0 ports that it takes up by having 2 more on the keyboard itself.

Can reprogram all the keys on the board to whatever you want, with the driver software that it comes with.

Has a pass through for headphones and mic (though you'll likely have to buy two splitter to plug it into your front speaker audio output and mic jack. That you surely have your speakers plugged into, and whatever you currently have on the mic input)

Is very solid.

Cons: Space bar is almost unusable for right handers.

For the Key layout of the default lay-in, the Insert/Home/Pageup/Delete/End/Pagedown is staggard down which makes the typical layout awkward.

Driver Software will sometimes randomly disable itself.

More often than not can't boot into the motherboard's bios, since keyboard won't activate fast enough.

Other Thoughts: Only lay-in I have is the regular keyboard layout. I have no experience with the metal of owner layout.

Removable keys are kinda pointless in my opinion. Seems to me that the key lay-ins are more of a gimmick than useful.

The space bar placement is the main reason why i give this keyboard a low rating. Space bar is essentially 2 buttons. With the right side of it not functional if the software isn't active The split between the keys is right were my thumb normally rests, so it just feels awkward typing on this thing. Which is the main purpose of a keyboard. To type sentences....

Even after 3 years of owning it. i still don't like the feel of that space bar. Had to train myself to curve my thumb inward to type with this board.

When gaming the space bar isn't a problem since I only use my Left hand to game (since the right hand is always on a mouse).

Also found that rebinding the keys to anything else tends to be more trouble than it's worth, since most games out there have rebindings built into them, already.

And text chating, or entering console commands from a custom keyboard layout (where you made a letter key into something else) is gonna make it near impossible to type anything.

3 out of 5 eggsOnly Hardware Compatible With Zboard Series

Pros: The Steelseries Shift is hardware compatible with all keyset of the Zboard series. The only things is SteelSeries Engine doesn't regnonize all keyset.

Software compatible with : Aion, WOW, Starcraft II

If you are buying this keyboard to use with a FPS keyset like Battlefield 2, Battlefield 2142, Doom ... You will be very disappointed because the software won't remap any key and neither won't let you custimize it. You will have to configure each game for it .because the arrow won't be WASD.

Cons: The Steelseries Engine software is very easy to use.

Other Thoughts: You can stat the keystroke will playing with steelseries engine and you will easy see which key for using the most in a particular game. Help you a lot when remapping key for an optimal setup

4 out of 5 eggsSteelseries shift- and the unwieldy engine

Pros: The steelseries Shift key board is easy to set up and use. The interchangeable key sets have another added benefit of being very easy to clean. with 24 programmable macro keys possible (8 keys and 3 layers) you wont be hurting for macro space. The steelseries engine also let's you create different profiles so you can truly never run out of macros.

Cons: The steelseries engine 2 is intolerable to use. Hopefully they will be changing over to the steelseries engine 3 but as of now it is almost unusable for what was promised. They keyboard it self has been great but the software has been anything but.

Other Thoughts: If you are looking for a good keyboard and are a saint when it comes to dealing with unwieldy software then this is your board. If you are like me and want something simple to program, you may want to wait out for the keyboard to be upgraded to the steelseries engine 3 or look else were.
