5 out of 5 eggsRocat Ryos MK Pro - Cherry Brown switches

This review is from: ROCCAT Ryos MK Pro Mechanical Gaming Keyboard with Per-Key Illumination - Brown Cherry MX Key Switch (ROC-12-851-BN)

Pros: -Lighted keys
-Mechanical keys
-The entire keyboard can be reprogrammed for any function.
-NO need for extra software. Driver is only needed to program the keyboard. Once you do that, it all runs from the built-in memory on the keyboard. Love it.
-Media keys, calculator key. Most people probably don't realize how useful a calculator key is.
-Big pads prevent sliding.

Cons: -No instructions.
-Pricey. If it's on sale, buy it ASAP.

Other Thoughts: Ended up getting Cherry MX Browns since no one had Cherry MX Reds when I got mine. Still good nonetheless.

Minor gripe with Cherry MX switch keys. They should really made a stepped Caps-lock key. I kept hitting the Caps-Lock key when gaming. It annoyed me enough to go looking for a stepped Caps-Lock key to replace the one that comes with this keyboard.

Some people don't like the integrated palm/wrist rest. I love it. I've used keyboards with large integrated wrist rests and found the slope and size perfect for my hands.

If you have a Roccat mouse, you can really take advantage of the features.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Keyboard

This review is from: ROCCAT Ryos MK Pro Mechanical Gaming Keyboard with Per-Key Illumination - Brown Cherry MX Key Switch (ROC-12-851-BN)

Pros: good response, mechanical, sturdy and comfortable to use for an extended basis. Lots of options for backlight controls.

Cons: a touch difficult to find some of the configuration options
the brown version is slightly more "mushy" that I would expect from a mechanical

Other Thoughts: Overall an excellent keyboard and one I would purchase again. It does take some time to find some of the configuration if you want to change the default lighting of the keys. I like the firmness of the blue cherry switches but was looking for something quieter. The trade off is it is slightly more mushy than some mechanicals but this is a very minor issue

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Keyboard

This review is from: ROCCAT Ryos MK Pro Mechanical Gaming Keyboard with Per-Key Illumination - Brown Cherry MX Key Switch (ROC-12-851-BN)

Pros: --Works as it should out of the box
--Mechanical keys (I love how there is more than one choice for key switches on this keyboard. Sucks to find the things I want on a keyboard, except it only comes with one type of switch and it's not the one I want)
--Can play games that don't allow custom key mapping the way I want
--Can customize each key with macro strings or real time recording
--Easy-Shift function adds a second layer of custom commands to each key
--Extensive options for the keyboard settings
--Doesn't slide around on desk and feels solid

Cons: --Kinda pricey
--Only blue backlighting (the roccat isku fx has 16.8m color palate. why can't this one?)
--I don't like how the usb ports come out at an angle
--The wrist rest isn't detachable or adjustable. It's not completely uncomfortable, but I'd prefer it a little higher or to be able to use my own rest
--Lacking instructions or guide on how to fully utilize the keyboard software

Other Thoughts: --Not big of a deal, but I kinda wish the usb and audio plugs were gold plated. I just don't like how cruddy normal ones feel after old age.
--The rubbery keys were a bit tough for me to get used to, but it's not so bad.
--I kinda wish the W key was a little bit more to the right. When I'm in the wasd position I usually have to tilt the keyboard a little to feel comfortable, otherwise my middle finger is sitting on top of the right edge of W. But I guess that's what I have a Nostromo for.
--The software sure needs a manual, but it's not all that difficult if to figure out for basic needs. Just need to spend a little time looking and trying things out.
--I'm still not used to the brown switches, but I love them. I still bottom out when I type the tactile bump isn't really necessary unless I'm practicing to type or press lightly because I usually bottom out anyway. The sensitivity is perfect for me though.
--The keyboard in general is kinda loud when you bottom out.
--I can't wait to get a roccat kone xtd mouse and use the 'talk' function.
--The backlighting effects and the neat things you can do like setting the lights to act like an ammo indicator are really gimmicky and I don't see much purpose for it since I don't look at my keyboard while I'm gaming. I should hope most people look at their screens while gaming. Kinda useless to keep track of keystrokes and have achievements for it, But sometimes gimmicks are fun.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Keyboard, Software lacking

This review is from: ROCCAT Ryos MK Pro Mechanical Gaming Keyboard with Per-Key Illumination - Brown Cherry MX Key Switch (ROC-12-851-BN)

Pros: Feels great, looks great the lights are fun.

Cons: No API has been released as promised. Their software is a bit difficult to use. Their macro software doesn't let you include mouse clicks which my old Razer keyboard did.

Other Thoughts: In certain settings the lights make it easy for someone to shoulder surf and get your password as you type it!

5 out of 5 eggsStrength in keys

This review is from: ROCCAT Ryos MK Pro Mechanical Gaming Keyboard with Per-Key Illumination - Brown Cherry MX Key Switch (ROC-12-851-BN)

Pros: -Strong feel, very durable
-Individually lit keys are awesome and useful
-Different keys lighting sets for when hitting Shift, or Control, or other keys, as well as the function key
-first mechanical brown switch keyboard I've had, and it feels great
-Huge rope for a cord which I love
-Response time
-n key rollover
-Good profile settings
-Great outer finish, smudge proof, which I don't really think it truly is, but it does stay cleaner than my older Microsoft Sidewinder x4
-Brown switches are quiet enough, while also having a good bump feel.

Cons: -The macro software is confusing, very advanced. I can't make heads or tails of any of it. I'm sure it's actually great, and very intuitive, but it would be nice to have in depth instructions.
-Only in blue lighting
-Takes two USB ports, not bad for me, but I can see others having an issue with this.
-Price is a little steep, just a little

Other Thoughts: Was this keyboard worth 170 bucks? well, since now I see it on sale, it isn't, lol.
I'm not sure it's worth that price, but the build quality is awesome, you definitely feel like your typing on a metal vault, so to speak.
The lighting is cool and intuitive, and if you bough a Roccat mouse, then the TALK feature is neat, and just kinda completes a Roccat setup.

I recommend Roccat products to anyone that wants serious gaming equipment. I haven't had a problem at all with this keyboard. As said the software is not user friendly with the macros, but even without making a million macros, it's a great keyboard.

5 out of 5 eggsThis thing is AWESOME!!!!

This review is from: ROCCAT Ryos MK Pro Mechanical Gaming Keyboard with Per-Key Illumination - Brown Cherry MX Key Switch (ROC-12-851-BN)

Pros: 1) Individually lit keys that are programmable
2) Every stinking key is re-mappable and macro-able
3) Fits even the fattest fingers
4) The finish is truly smudge proof (greasy fingers beware)
5) Heavy weight king of Keyboards
6) Near silent with Brown MX switches (your switches will change this)
7) Has pre built-in setting for CS, WoW, SC2 and several other top-tier games
8) Is infinitely programmable as an N-key rollover USB keyboard
9) has extra USB and Headset ports

Cons: 1) Is hefty
2) The lights are blinding me
3) the wire channels DO NOT hold wires, they just hide them
4) the Headset and mic port does not have a USB port on that side
5) Steep learning curve for programming keys

Other Thoughts: To address all of you who are having the keyboard black out on you -> Under Key illumination the layer illumination key needs to be changed FOR EVERY key you want full back light on! (Shift keys, FN, windows, crtl, alt) Also turn of the FADE FX!!!

This keyboard is SIMPLY AMAZING! Solid enough to have been worth the year wait! The drawbacks on the design of the keyboard do not outweigh the major style and function this keyboard provides!

Yes your paying ~$180 for a keyboard, but this thing can be made to do anything! From cheap (but awesome optical effects on keystroke) to time intensive macros (that can be recorded on the fly!) to just plain typing, this keyboard has pushed things to the limit of what YOUR keyboard should be doing for you!

If you are a casual/semi-pro gamer this keyboard will make you delve deeper into your game with on the fly abilities and rapid uninterrupted key presses.

Simply put: There is NOTHING on the market that has PER KEY MACROS with BACK LIGHTING like this keyboard!

If your an enthusiast and you really want a top of the line keyboard and something you will not regret and will evolve as you learn more about keyboards and computers this is your keyboard!!

I've owned a lot of keyboards (my last surviving keyboard was an old logitech g15 first-gen) I've used the corsair k95 and the ducky shine, but nothing has let me choose EVERYTHING I want in a keyboard in one package. DO NOT SETTLE FOR LESS!

5 out of 5 eggsExactly what I Was Looking For

This review is from: ROCCAT Ryos MK Pro Mechanical Gaming Keyboard with Per-Key Illumination - Brown Cherry MX Key Switch (ROC-12-851-BN)

Pros: Everything about it is fantastic. I got Brown keys because I didn't want to accidentally hit keys while gaming and thought they might be best for that. I feel that I probably would have been ok with Red, but I do type a lot and figured Brown would be best for me. I have no problem with the feeling of the Browns.

Cons: Software doesn't have any description or "how to" information.

I emailed Roccat about some settings and they got back with me very promptly, see below for some tips.

I still have no idea how to make some things advertised about this keyboard work, like using the keyboard as a "mana bar" or "hit detection".

Other Thoughts: I asked Roccat support for some information:

To have keys illuminated even if you hit "shift":

"Please open the Key Illumination tab in the software of your Ryos and set the illumination mode to automatic instead of manual. Now the illumination only changes when you press Easy-Shift or the Fn-Key. The manual function is intended to offer users the possibility to define multiple illumination layers to configure it for programs they play or work with. For example it is quite handy when you use photoshop. You can configure the layer for Shift so that only the keys that are connected to a key combination in photoshop that works with shift are illuminated. Also useful in games with many key assignments so you don't have to remember every assignment. When you don't want to use it just use the automatic mode."

Keys turn off when pressed for one second:

"stay in the key illumination tab and disable the Fade FX effect in the bottom left corner."

In automatic mode, most lights on keys are off. To turn all of them on, you might have to go to the "main control" tab and turn the "key illumination" to a brightness level above 0%. Also, you might want to go to the key illumination tab and find the lower middle of the screen section called "PRE-DEFINED LIGHT GROUPS. Select all of those check boxes, and hit apply.

5 out of 5 eggsGot it working

This review is from: ROCCAT Ryos MK Pro Mechanical Gaming Keyboard with Per-Key Illumination - Brown Cherry MX Key Switch (ROC-12-851-BN)

Pros: Finally got it working as it should and has lots and lots of features.Haven't tried Marcos but will keep an eye on these reviews as some of the features have to be figured out. I will post an answer if I can help.

Cons: Only two cons that I can think of, one is a little too large as wrist support does not come off but I knew that when ordering and no manual is available which to me is unacceptable considering all the features this keyboard has

3 out of 5 eggsJeremy Question

This review is from: ROCCAT Ryos MK Pro Mechanical Gaming Keyboard with Per-Key Illumination - Brown Cherry MX Key Switch (ROC-12-851-BN)

Pros: Some good and some bad so far.

Cons: Jeremy, Wondering if you can answer a question for me.
I cannot get an answer from tech support.
When I use the shift key to type a capital letter my lights go out on the keyboard but come back on when I release it, Do you have that problem, and do you know the fix.

Thanks
