Das Keyboard DASK3ULTMS1SI Black USB Wired Standard Model S Ultimate Silent Keyboard

You’re sold on the tactile awesomeness of the das keyboard, but need it a bit more on the quiet side? Maybe you’ve got super-noise-sensitive coworkers, or you spend a lot of time on the phone while you type. Perhaps you just want to keep this little beauty to yourself. Whatever the reason, we’ve got you covered. The “silent” model, which sounds much like a regular keyboard, gives you a superior keystroke without all the (albeit cool) racket.

Das Keyboard Model S Ultimate Silent is blank, with no inscriptions on the keys. It features high-end, mechanical key switches that click less than its cousin, the Model S Ultimate. This quieter model is ideal for people working in an open environment or for workers who need to type while talking on the phone. The Model S Silent keeps its outstanding tactile feel. The other features are identical to the Model S Ultimate, including a two-port USB 2.0 hub and newly redesigned electronics that provide full n-key rollover.

  • newegg German-engineered mechanical key switches Das Keyboard compares to the legendary IBM Model M. Its best-in-class mechanical gold-plated key switches provide a tactile and audio click that makes typing a pure joy.
  • newegg USB 2.0 hub The high-speed USB hub allows you to sync and charge your iPhone, iPod or any USB compatible devices.
  • newegg Extra-long USB cable Das Keyboard sports a 2-meter (6.6ft) cable that goes through your desk grommet to keep your workspace neat and tidy.
  • newegg N-key rollover Model S allows full n-key rollover with a PS2 adapter, and 6 keys with USB. Great for fast typists and gamers alike.

4 out of 5 eggsvery nice keyboard

Pros: The keyboard is quite sturdy, and the addition of two USB inputs in the keyboard means you dont give up any to use this, or if you use the PS/2 adapter, you come away with an extra one.

Cons: the polished look will easily show fingerprints and scratches over time, even with the included cloth.
Also, while the USB hub is great to have, it is not in the best location on the keyboard, which is right where I am using my mouse.
The cord is very thick, and so i had to drill a larger hole in the pull-out tray in my desk to fit it through (this isn't worth docking an egg however, just a heads up)

Other Thoughts: This does not have any printed keycaps at all, and while it does not detract from the quality, it does pose a problem for people who are not touch-typists. I wanted to get the printed keycap version of this when it was on sale, but they were gone fast.

Also, while the keyboard title says that it is silent, it only refers to the MX switch type that is used, the MX browns, which produces a less audible sound than the MX Blues, which are made to produce a clicky sound every time they register a keypress.
One of the advantages to mechanical keyboards is that you don't need to press the key all the way down(referred to as 'bottoming') to be sure that the keystroke registered.
The only reason I can think that anyone would say these are louder than the Clicky/MX blues is because they are bottoming out their keypresses. If this is an issue, then there are sites that sell modified keycaps with rubber stoppers on the bottom to prevent the bottoming clack sound.

1 out of 5 eggsGuys really?

Pros: Not much pros for me ....

Cons: It is soooooo loud I can't even do anything with this keyboard. Don't believe the silent part in name of this keyboard. I can't even listen to music while typing with this keyboard. This keyboard might make you feel like you are typing fast with this loud sound but It is annoying me so much right now. I am programmer I need to type a lot. How am I gonna concentrate on work when there is gonna be so loud TAH TAH sound every time I click this keyboard....

Other Thoughts: May be you can use this stupid keyboard for music like drum.... But, not for silent keyboard that you can use for working. I bought this keyboard just looking at 5 stars in rate and silent in name because I didn't have much time when I looked at it. If you don't like loud sound and haven't memorized the keyboard yet, don't buy this.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Keyboard!

Pros: This is the first mechanical keyboard I've bought and I am quite happy with it. The unit has good weight and looks great to boot. The buttons feel very crisp and it isn't uncomfortable to use. The USB ports are a nice touch and I love the overall sleek-but-subtle design.

Cons: This keyboard isn't exactly "silent" and doesn't have any special features. It also picks up fingerprints and debris easily but obviously that is going to hold true for almost any keyboard that is used on a daily basis.

Other Thoughts: I bought this keyboard to use at work and to help to correct the bad typing habits I've picked up over the years. It's definitely helped me and now I am getting much better and more accurate at laying down text, which is terrific!

4 out of 5 eggsNot silent, still great keyboard

Pros: This keyboard feels dependable and looks great. It has a really good feel and great key action.

Cons: Silent? Not in the slightest. I upgraded from the original Das Keyboard model (which isn't quiet at all, either), and it's actually both louder and higher-pitched than the original Das Keyboard.

5 out of 5 eggsThis keyboard will get you laid

Pros: It's blank. If you can touch-type this won't make a difference at all to you and will significantly increase the intimidation factor when non-touch-typists see your keyboard.

This will force you to stop looking at the keyboard while you type. You can still glance at the keyboard if you wish but you'll feel like an idiot every time you look down to see what you're typing and you're greeted by the blank key caps that offer you no assistance other than seeing where the F and J keys are with their little bumps.

Cherry MX Browns are phenomenal. I bought this for my office at work and the key switches offer the right balance of feedback and noise. I think my coworkers would be driven mad if I had chosen the model with MX Blue switches. In reality they MX Browns are hardly louder than a membrane keyboard unless you continually bottom them out.

N-key rollover using PS/2 is great if your computer supports it. 6-key rollover using USB will still get the job done if you don't have support for PS/2 (my docked laptop at work only supports USB).

Cons: It's blank. If you haven't memorized what symbols are where in the number row you're in for a fun game of guess-and-check. If you don't know how to touch-type this is likely the worst keyboard you could possibly purchase until you are able to learn.

Other Thoughts: Super high quality. It's not the best for new typists or those who still get caught up on trickier letters/words but great for anyone looking for a well-built piece of hardware that looks and performs at the top of its class.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat keyboard, but...

Pros: Great mechanical keyboard. Solidly built, feels good under the fingers. N-key rollover* if that's what you're looking for.

Cons: On my original system, I had separate mouse/keyboard PS2 ports. The keyboard worked great, and had true N-key rollover. That system then crapped out, so I built a new one. I sought a motherboard exclusively with PS2 ports so I could retain the NKRO functionality. The board I bought came with a combo PS2 port. As it turns out, after submitting a ticket to Das Keyboard, the keyboard is *NOT* compatible with combo PS2 ports. Had I known this ahead of time (it isn't advertised anywhere I could see) I would have purchased a different motherboard. If NKRO is what you're looking for, make sure your motherboard has SEPARATE KB/Mouse PS2 ports! This isn't enough to dock an egg, more a frustration and I'm trying to help out other prospective buyers.

Other Thoughts: Aside from only having 6-key RO now, and polling on my USB bus (which is what I wanted to avoid, hence buying the mechanical keyboard) I love it.

4 out of 5 eggsVery good

Pros: It's my first mechanical and I must say I'm impressed. I didn't believe a keyboard would make such difference, but now I do.

The board itself is very solid and screams quality; I've never seen a nicer keyboard before. And it's full nkro.

Cons: -Pretty expensive, even on sale

-The person who decided to market this keyboard as "Silent" must be deaf. I was aware that the sound of the keyboard would be clicky, and I don't mind it, but saying it's silent is an insult. Remove the "silent" from the product name and you would have a full 5 stars from me :)

Other Thoughts: I love it.

5 out of 5 eggsperfect keyboard

Pros: -cherry mx brown keys means the "middle ground between gaming and typist keyboards." i agree with this.
-sleek design with no labels
-clickyclickyclicky
-durable and easy to clean

Cons: -does not reciprocate when i try to cuddle with it at night

Other Thoughts: -i've found that this keyboard intimidates my friends or loved ones who are not touch-typists... for example, my boyfriend doesn't like to use my computer when i'm not the one typing. then again, some might view this as a plus.
-the keyboard arrived with a squeaky key, which seems to be normal. there is a tutorial on the das keyboard website on how to fix this by adding a small amount of lubricant. some might be irritated at this small maintenance.
-the keyboard stops me from being tempted to continue working when i get a phone call... this is probably for the best so i'm not a jerk to whoever's talking to me.

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent Quality but....

Pros: Everything about this keyboard screams high quality and solid construction. Simple, elegant, and not flashy.

Cons: I was disappointed with the "Silent" part of it. Frankly, its not much quieter than my Razer Blackwidow Ultimate which uses cherry blue key switches.

It comes with virtually no bells and whistles, but you should know that coming in.

Like the blackwidow, this keyboard also suffers from having its usb jacks on the right side which could potentially cause some issues getting in the way of your mouse

Very Pricey

Other Thoughts: The cherry brown mechanical key switches on this keyboard does not have the same satisfying tactile feedback that the cherry blue mechanical keys have. The big advantage of the cherry browns being "silent", at least on this specific keyboard, is minimal at best.

However, there is no denying the build quality on this keyboard. I wouldn't recommend this for gaming (I like cherry blues), but its a great keyboard for the office.

I would say that Das Keyboards might be slightly better than the blackwidow in overall build quality. However, the blackwidow caters to a little different crowd; the backlit keys are nice, as are the extra macros and headphone/mic jacks. Both are excellent keyboards nevertheless.

The bottom line is that this is one well made keyboard. I would recommend getting the regular rather than the silent as the extra quietness is not worth such a decrease in tactile feedback.

Also, having no key markers on your keyboard just makes the girls flock to you..

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: The quality of the keys are excellent, very smooth.

Cons: Very expensive.

Other Thoughts: Unfortunately, a lot of my friends can't use my computer because of the keyboard's lack of letters.
