It pivots so you can work in portrait or landscape mode, and lets you set the monitor comfortably for your body and eyes!
Samsung's MagicColor improves and adjusts mid-level colors to shades the eye can accept as natural. MagicBright 2 optimizes text, video, sports, gaming or internet viewing with the push of a button and MagicTune, Samsung's OSD (On-Screen Display) provides simple, convenient adjustments to image quality. MagicRotation, MagicStand, and MagicSpeed complete the package with ergonomic adjustments and high-speed visuals.
The 917P-BK features an advanced dual interface to handle both analog and digital video signals. 971P - Disappointing
- Pros: The monitor features an 8-bit PVA panel; accordingly, the colors displayed by this model are vivid and true. The monitor also has relatively good back-lighting with only slightly noticeable bleeding in the corners when
displaying dark colors.
- Cons: The monitor does well to display static images and standard office applications, but when there is any movement
involved, a performance decrease is noticeable. And this problem does not manifest itself solely in ghosting: when displaying a moving object, a distinct ringing around said object can be noticed. This is amplified by the monitor's innate propensity for making colors have a reddish tone. Moreover, video screening is plagued by a noticeable amount of noise. While game play is not plagued with noise or intense ghosting, the reddish ringing around moving objects is just as strong.
This model is advertised as having a 6MS response time; however, this number is deceiving. In practice, the monitor achieves no where near 6MS when displaying most colors, and with some colors, this model's response time is downright unacceptable for its price range. Some people may not notice the ghosting and ringing reddish tones, but for others, like me, it will be obvious and irritating.
- Other Thoughts: My recommendation to anyone thinking of purchasing this monitor is that a significant amount of time be spent
researching it before hand. There are not many reviews for this particular model, but there are several in-depth examinations of its predecessor, the 970P. While this model has an entirely different stand, its panel is almost identical to the 970P. Tom's Hardware Guide, for example, notes that while the 970P is magnificent for displaying images and doing office work, its video playback is incredibly poor and its game play, while fast, is lacking as well. Samsung generally makes high quality electronic equipment, but the overdrive technology they employ in order to achieve the faster response times is flawed. This results in the problems that I have mentioned. At the very least, go to your local store and take a look at the model before ordering it. Of course, I would still recommend ordering through Newegg no matter which monitor you decide on: they have the best service.
Horrible for Gaming and Multimedia
- Pros: * Excellent color and saturation.
* Good color management. * Great dynamic range. * Great for photo work.
- Cons: * Image quality is good only for static images, once things start moving...
* 6ms Rating is B.S.! * Very noticeable ghosting with games and a distinct red after image follows moving objects, unless everything is very brightly lit in the game scene. * Games like BF2142 are nearly unplayable! * Way overpriced for a 19" panel. It's only TN Film +hiFRC like many hybrid "8-bit" panels. Samsung's S-PVA is questionable here. * Poor DVD and movie playback. Image is blurred because of the panels poor performance in darker colors. Unsuitable for multimedia. * For full disclosure I should add that the product came in a timely fashion and was undamaged, however contained 1 dead pixel which I was able to revive by simply touching it.
- Other Thoughts: While I was at first delighted by the panel's color quality (which is superb) and 2d text sharpness; the ghosting and after image produced in games and even moving windows on the desktop makes it completed unsuitable for general use other than graphic design and productivity apps. Even casual gamers should shy away from this model.
I will try to sell this thing if I can; I feel I've wasted way too much time and money on it. It can't even surpass an older Samsung 710N 17" LCD from a couple years ago and that's a true shame.

Samsung no hw or sw support!
- Pros: This is a nice crisp monitor for the price.
- Cons: Though advertised on Samsung's magic tune page to work with NVIDIA windows qualified drivers, Magic Tune will not load on my second screen of a two screen system. That means there is no means to set contrast, brightness or color temperature on this screen.
The second 971P display I bought does not fill the screen on 60 hz mode. It fills the screen in 70 hz mode though. The first screen properly adjusts width at all rates. There are no adjustments to correct this. It was shipped from the factory unadjusted and unadjustable, even on the monitor port where magic tune is working. I give a grade of "F" for QC and a grade of "F" for software support.
I attempted to get online assistance from Samsung. After filling out the form, filling in serial numbers and trying to describe the issues in the 100 character limit, Samsumgs web site closed the screen with a message "web site support is not available". I would give them worse than "F" for customer support.
- Other Thoughts: It's a shame when companies do a nice job on product engineering and then fail to properly support them with software support, customer support, and abandon the product even while it's being sold as a current model.
It is very unfortunate when a company won't provide access to support online or via telephone. There is no service center in Washington DC, area either. The only option on a defective new product is refund and buy something else.
I won't be buying Samsung products of any type ever again.
The Artist's LCD
- Pros: As for first impressions, the unit's design is simple, functional and elegant. The glossy piano black is a nice aesthetic touch, and the positionable pivot stand is well designed and handy. Under the hood, it's a solid performer. I'm a digital artist and photographer, and wanted to get away from the standard 6-bit dithered panels. This panel is an S-PVA, which, a little research would say, reproduces true 8-bit color. The occasional skeptics will write that it's actually a 6-bit with temporal dithering. After seeing the difference myself, it doesn't matter to me anymore. I haven't seen colors and gradients this silky smooth since I ditched my CRT a few years ago. True 8-bit, 6-bit with hi-FRC, I leave the debate to you. It's beautiful nonetheless.
- Cons: As others have written, this is not an LCD for the "leet gamerz." Is there ghosting? Yes. Is it visible? Image depending, yes. Is it horrible? Certainly not. But then, opinions may vary. If you intend to do more gaming than anything else, sure, you may want to look into a 6-bit panel with faster response times. Granted, this model sports 6ms response times, but that's gray-to-gray, and not a representation of a complete transition from white to black. That's where ghosting will be at its worst, but even then, it wasn't enough to annoy me.
- Other Thoughts: Like other reviewers have noted, this panel has no OSD per se; rather it's controlled by software. I will admit, I was terrified that my meager video adapter (an Intel 945GM) was incompatible with MagicTune. And it was. But after some research, I learned that MagicTune is only the frontend for a technology called DDC/CI, which nine in ten video cards will support in some form or another. So your new nVidia card won't work with MagicTune? Not a problem. Your card's control panel will give you the same control over the LCD that MagicTune would. And the problem was solved.
Nice monitor
- Pros: Great pivot, clear and very bright. No dead pixels.
- Cons: Very little height adjustment, no setup instructions.
