4 out of 5 eggsHDMI 1.4a does support WQHD

Pros: I love the glossy screen & glass coating but others I know will not. The glass coating at least is not marketed, so many potential buyers may not be aware of it. Brushed aluminum chassis is elegant & not especially heavy.

Cons: No mounting solutions. I only removed an egg, however, because this is not explicitly stated anywhere that I could find. Have to return it, as I - and other flight & racing simmers - use monitor stands with VESA mounts for use with gaming cockpits.

Also given that is not specifically marketed as a graphics workstation type monitor (w/ all the requisite software that comes with those), at $1K+, I think mounting solutions should be offered. It's marketed as an all around monitor, and VESA mounting solutions are standard on all such monitors. However, I'm not in the industry, so I may be wrong. For that reason, I did not remove an egg for this. The lost egg, again, is due to Samsung's silence.

Other Thoughts: DVI-D, Display Port and HDMI all support WQHD.

5 out of 5 eggsResearch before you buy...

Pros: This review is primarily in response to another review that rated the monitor as 1 star given the fact that he couldn't get it to work with a VGA cable. (see other Thoughts)

First off, this monitor is great.

The color reproduction is top tier with no discernible color cast across the screen. The fact that the monitor is able to store calibration data is also a huge plus.

Calibration is very easy and doesn't require software to load a profile to achieve calibration, the monitor is able to handle that itself - provided you use a compatible colorimeter. Samsung appears to be increasing the compatibility. I say this given the fact that when I bought it my Spyders weren't a supported device, but an update very quickly remedied that.

On the gaming and media side of things, I've yet to notice any ghosting whatsoever in Skyrim, ACIII, Metro, BF3, etc. So that seems to be a definite advantage to the PLS panel over traditional IPS.

Aesthetically, the pictures adequately represent the monitor. It is sleek and clean. The only thing that threw me a bit was the actual size of the base, which is larger than I thought it would be. But, this isn't a con seeing as it adds to stability.

Cons: The viewing angle could be better, but I'm just hoping for the impossible. Over-all it's quite good though.

There is some back-light bleed, which is unavoidable it seems. But it is no worse than what I've seen on a Cinema Display, so this is just the norm. Nothing to take an egg away from given that it's the nature of the beast.

Personally, I don't like the way the cables hook to the monitor. All of the connections are at the back of the base, but the recessed space for them is minor. This means that the cables, especially the DVI, protrude a good bit from the back to where they're pushing against the wall once I get the monitor positioned to my liking. This isn't a big deal though, just something that has irked me and most likely wouldn't bother that many people.

Also, there's no mounting options. I knew this before purchasing the monitor - but it is something people should be aware of.

All in all, none of these cons are severe enough to detract from the monitor enough to warrant the loss of an egg.

Other Thoughts: Now, as to the person who rated the monitor one egg because they couldn't connect it via VGA - Here is a bit of information for those who might be in the same situation.

To properly drive a monitor at 2560x1440 you need a Dual-Link DVI or Display Port. This monitor doesn't include a VGA connection because it would be pointless to do so.

Also, there is a difference between DVI and Dual-Link DVI. DVI is only supposed to properly carry a signal of up to 1920x1080, whereas Dual-Link can handle up to 2048x1536 due to increased bandwidth. This also means that under no circumstances would a VGA to DVI adapter work properly.

So to properly use this as a computer monitor, you have to have Dual-Link DVI or Display Port.

This means that if you're just using some off the shelf computer, there is a good chance you would have to install a video card that is able to properly handle this monitor.

If you're in doubt, you can always look up the supported resolutions of your video adapter.

But if you're like that reviewer and weren't sure about the requirements to handle this, now you know.

Also, none of this is a negative against this monitor. All monitors like this are this way. The details page clearly states the available input connections.

And though HDMI, is listed, it is not a connection you want to use as the primary connection for computing seeing as the monitor won't be at its native resolution (HDMI is limited to 1920x1200). This is provided in case you want to hook an xbox or something up to the monitor.

1 out of 5 eggsWill not connect to older computer - poor customer service from Samsung

Pros: None that I can discern.

Cons: I was unable to connect this monitor to my five year old PC because the computer only has a VGA port and this monitor will not work with a VGA connection.

I contacted Samsung but four different representatives were unable to help me. One representative said i could try a DVI to VGA adapter, but Samsung did not make them and he had no idea if that would work. From my own cursory research, it seems that those adapters are made to use newer computers with older monitors, not the other way around.

I found it unbelievable that Samsung is selling a $1,000 monitor, but no one at the company could tell me whether or not it was possible to adapt the monitor to work with a VGA connection on a PC.

Additionally, I bought this monitor because I thought it look sleek and modern in the picture and it is for a home office, so I didn't want ugly plastic. However, the monitor isn't a nice in person as in the picture and the stand picks up a lot of fingerprints.

Other Thoughts: Make sure you have a DVI connector on your computer.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Monitor, Poor Features

Pros: I did a lot of searching before purchasing this monitor, comparing several "similar" products. In the end, I spent the extra money (unfortunately elsewhere since I had a $1500 gift card there) and purchased the SB970. Both for video editing AND gaming (I would not call myself an extreme gamer by any stretch), the image quality, color spectrum and lighting are better than my Samsung 60" 240mhz television downstairs that I /was/ so proud of before. I found myself considering bringing my xbox into my office (which would force some up-conversion as I believe the xbox caps at 1080p resolution) -- ultimately deciding against it for productivity reasons.

As others have said, don't expect to use the HDMI connection and realize this devices full potential. A shielded DVI cable is optimal, I found the included cable insufficient and purchased an AMC cable that fixed up some of the sharpness issues I was having. My W3000H Flatron from LG, the third one finally busted so taking my warranty-provided gift card, I grabbed this and from the 30" to the 27" and screen to screen I am very pleased by this purchase.

Cons: My biggest complaint? Heck, my only complaint is the lack of Vesa compatibility. I've got "future tubing" installed in my office and it is configured like a telepresence room with two lower quality monitors mounted in Portait mode beside what used to be the W3000H. I now have to rethink my whole office monitor setup. While I expect and in this case am provided with a great deal of customizability even though this item is hand tuned before distribution, I would have preferred to see this item lose some of the features in the base and offer similar mounting solutions as the 850D (concealed power bar and cable management, or in my case, concealed bar and simple feeding of the cables into the concealed routing tube in my walls. It is going to be weird having this monitor 26" from my face instead of a comfortable 32". When talking large monitors, especially at the WQHD level with screen display verging on the so-high-quality-its-downright-tiny, the lack of flexibility in this department is off putting.

Other Thoughts: I love this monitor, and working from home I have time to play around with some setups, but I think the oversight listed in the cons section is significant. I would recommend this product to others in the market, provided they make an informed decision, and I would have bought from NewEgg if I could have. This review is for the quality of the monitor alone.

5 out of 5 eggsSamsung Series 9 "A Gamer's Dream

Pros: Holi Jezuz mother of f_kk, Hands down!! This is the best LED monitor for a Gamer on the Universe No arguments period, a must have item if you build Pcs. It Truly delivers 1 Billion eye popping brilliant colors. Blacks are Blacks and no Lag or Ghosting on games. Gosh, I love the Crystal Clear Glass panel. It is very eye catching and looks sharp. With Samsung's PLS technology it beats any of Apple's Cinema Display in a heart beat as well as Apple's Retina technology. With a monter Graphics Card, the Series 9 is able to display HD movies, games, photo & video editing in a crisp clear view.. wow.. I love this monitor more than my wife.. jk...

Cons: Ouch!!! This monitor will leave ya broke and let me tell you, it is very and I mean very expensive. Many peeps will complain about the glare of the monitor since it has a Crystal Clear Glass panel, but I love it and don't mind the glare. I actually think that all LCD monitors should have a Glass Panel to protect the film. The monitor may be a little flimsy, but only if you are poking it. The tilt and pivot is limited and the built in speakers may in fact be uselss.

Other Thoughts: Word of advice, when you first install and configure your monitor, just connect it to your PC and DO NOTHING. Yes, DO NOTHING meaning do not mess with settings, colors, or software. This monitor comes pre-calibrated from Samsung Labs. It will learn the media you throw at it and give you the best view in colors. Last, I recomend connecting the Samsung Series 9 to a Power line conditioner/surge protector. Trust me the power line conditoner effectively eliminates electronic interference, giving you clear, pristine picture, and will also protect it against power surges. Overall, this is the best LED Monitor money can buy.

3 out of 5 eggsHmmYa!

Pros: Simply Beautiful pure eye candy in every way! zero dead pixel

Cons: Had a problem with the touch sensitive power button not working very well if at all mostly when the PC was on. Called Samsung Support, they had me unplug the monitor, reconnect it..nogo same problem, advise me to RMA with Newegg. Called Newegg, young lady started to set me up then stated the S27B970D is out of stock, and no idea when it would be back in stock. She then informed me that I should RMA now and when they receive the monitor I could buy something else..else...else!!!! I stated that then I would be with out any monitor until it comes back in stock, she also add that I only had 20day's left to RMA and after that I'd be stuck with this less then green monitor. At this point I requested a Supervisor, she became argumentative, demanded Super..placed on hold 5mins young lady came back on line stated that it would be another 10mins. I told her that I had to pick up my granddaughter , and I'd call back..she was delighted at the turn of events. Over the years I've 2 new complete builds out of Newegg, highend Asus Laptop, Nikon Digital SLR.....ect. Got be a better way to treat a loyal customer.

On a good note my S27B970D is ok, I started to check all the menu items since those buttons seem to work fine, only the power button was giving me the problem. Tried all the settings came to the "Key Repeat Time" which was set to "Acceleration" their was three different settings, and "No Acceleration", and that where I set it...Bingo!!! The power button is working like it should. I should of known that pumping this new monitor with all the goodness of my 256mb AGP video card that the S27B970D just couldn't handle it :) Nowhere could I find any detailed info on this setting. The Manual is vary vague.

Other Thoughts: Samsung unable to help with problem.
Newegg lacked empathy.

in both of these cases I believe additional training is needed. I don't mean to sound critical, just trying to help

Besides that very happy with this monitor.

5 out of 5 eggsSecond Time's the Charm!

Pros: I wrote below that I would update my review after my RMA went through and I'm pleased to report my replacement has been absolutely flawless. No backlight bleeding, no bright or dark spots and no dust underneath the glass. 3686400 pixels, and every single one of them is perfect!

Many thanks to Newegg's eggcellent customer service! They took my flawed panel back and exchanged it hassle-free. They even shipped my new one out via next day air on top of it all, absolutely free. I really couldn't be happier!

The factory calibration offers very accurate reproduction of the sRGB color space right out of the box, with perfect gamma correction. I haven't even found a need to mess with Natural Color Expert (the bundled software package that gives access to the hardware LUT).

Colors are precise and vivid, contrast is sharp and the viewing angles are fantastic!

Cons: As others have mentioned, this monitor is a bit lacking in ergonomics. The stand offers height adjustment and tilt, but doesn't pivot or swivel and the USB hub only features 2.0 ports. I knew that going in though so no eggs off there.

Other Thoughts: While the features mentioned above would be nice given the price point, to me, they'd really just be the icing on the cake. Far from deal-breakers. The star of the show is this amazing panel, which shines in all its glory through the glossy tempered glass panel.

The reflective screen could be a problem if you work in areas with uncontrolled ambient lighting, but if not, there's no matching the clarity of high-end gloss panels like this and the Apple Cinemas.

Unlike the Apples though, this monitor also features a 16-bit LUT for even more precise hardware calibration if your needs demand the absolute highest color fidelity.

2 out of 5 eggssheep in wolves clothing

Pros: excellent panel uniformity, very nice glossy screen with tempered glass, great PPI and resolution

Cons: price, this monitor it it's current state, and specs and build quality should cost no more then $600-$700 if they fix the stand.
I read a couple of reviews (even video with the box saying 1 million colors and other specs for this monitor. the reviewers mention a 10 bit panel with 1.07 million colors (sweet). But the panel is 8bit with 16.7 million colors.

the wobbly stand, unless you can put this monitor on a huge solid desk or concrete it will wobble infront of you when you move the mouse and use the keyboard.

Other Thoughts: If Samsung revised this monitor to include a solid base, and put in a 10 bit panel with 1 billion colors while still offering 5-6ms response then I would gladly give them the money.
next to a 30" apple cinema HD, the 970D looks better then TN but not close to IPS 10 bit.

its going back to micro center tomorrow.

3 out of 5 eggsGorgeous Monitor, with Some Quality Control iIsues.

Pros: It is an absolutely beautiful monitor, well calibrated to the sRGB color space out of the box.

Light weight, comes fully assembled, and it sips power thanks to the LED backlighting.

The glossy screen lets the colors really pop in all their glory, unlike matte alternatives. Coming from an older model with heavy anti-glare, everything looks so much more vivid.

Cons: Mine unfortunately came with two dead (black) pixels near the center of the screen and a ~1cm long smudge under the glass on the upper right side. They're rather distracting when viewing a light colored background.

I wouldn't be so dejected if this was one of those generic B-quality IPS imports people are swarming over, but when you pay this much for a premium panel, I don't think expecting a pixel perfect display is asking too much.

Other Thoughts: I'll be RMAing this for a replacement next week. Hopefully the next one will be error free since this is truly a fantastic monitor when all is working as it should. I'll update my review then.
