5 out of 5 eggsIf you are a CRT fan... Get this!!!!

Pros: The AS120 was the best NEC monitor when introduced, something like 5 years ago. It remained the best, even though newer models were introduced! (NEC made many of the best CRT monitors.)

I paid 2X Newegg price for the AS120 when it first came out. It blew away the competition in that it had very sharp text, rich color, and high refresh rates.

The moment I saw it on display at a computer store, I knew this was what to get! Upon inspection of specs and price comparison, I purchased it. The picture AND TEXT looked that good!!

The screen is almost flat – compared to many other CRTs. The actual style of tube used was referred to as "flat-square" in the day... known for the highest focus (sharpest text) of all the tubes out there at the time. And also capable of very high refresh rates when high-quality electronics were incorporated (as with the AS120.) These tubes were also more expensive.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: It worked beautifully for three years, under very heavy use, then the electronics started failing, and that was it. That was around two years ago.

If you are a CRT fan - get this!!!!

*Make sure your video supports the higher refresh rates at higher res*

3 out of 5 eggsNEC Accusync 120

Pros: CRT NEW not a refurb

Cons: This is not a flat screen and comes with the setup all messed up as far as color geometry etc. An hour of playing with it got me a quite nice picture.

Other Thoughts: It's a shame CRT's are dead as flat screens are just not as versitile.

5 out of 5 eggsGet yours while you still can.

Pros: Bright, clear, picture with excellent color representation and contrast. Does not suffer any of the problems of color accuracy, lack of contrast, or color range inherent to LCDs. Blacks are truly black. Hardly any misconvergence, even at the corners at 1600x1200 resolution. Can do even higher resolutions, with at least 70Hz refresh rate. This is an absolutely superior choice for gaming and movies, especially those with dark scenes or large ranges in lighting.

Cons: Huge and heavy. Somewhat high power consumption.

Other Thoughts: Large, high-quality CRTs won't be available much longer. The display industry is busy cramming LCD and plasma down our throats - you can't even buy a new Trinitron-based monitor any more. If you appreciate the superior picture quality of a large CRT over a comparably-priced LCD, this is about the only one left.

4 out of 5 eggslolwat "dead pixel"

Pros: Big, customizable, vibrant colors, really good refresh rates compared to other crt's still in production

Cons: desk creaked like an old rope bridge when i sat this thing on there. it weighs as much as a fat little kid. power hungry, and will ruin your eyes over time.

Other Thoughts: I'm not gonna hold the fact that I got this product with a piece of debris or some kind of defect inside the tube against it, i'm also not gonna hold the fact that Newegg wouldnt let me return it because apparently return CRT's fall under the jurisdiction of the LCD return policy, because 2 subpixels do not work on this crt. i can't even notice it when i play games. its just annoying to know its there

5 out of 5 eggsGreat monitor!

Pros: My other system has a SOny Trinitron 21" monitor that is over five years old. After hooking up this NEC, I could tell that my Sony is on its way out. I bought this monitor for my new system to play games on, specifically World of Warcraft, Age of Conan and Combat Mission. All of these look great on this monitor.

The menu system on the monitor is easy to navigate through and set up. This was a surprising plus.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I had considered getting an LCD that was specced to handle gaming graphics, but there were way too many reviews on them that were bad. So decided to go with the NEC CRT. I am not disappointed.

5 out of 5 eggsComming back to CRT's

Pros: CRT's last for years. I have owned many. My Television is 17 years old and still has a great picture. I thought I would buy the best and newest so I bought a Veiwsonic VX922 for nearly 500 bucks! 18 months later the backlit mercury vapor lamp is going out and I must wait for a replacement. I ordered this fine unit based on prior reviews and on my own personal experience. I also want to say that the dot pitch on my LCD has been much less than what I expected and see text being pixelated and online games are grainy. I can't wait to have a good CRT again. I think that the monitor industry has sold us a bill of goods and that LCD's will never measure up to a good CRT! I bought my son one of these as well. Eyesight is a horrible thing to waste!

Cons: Higher power consumption. A bit larger footprint than my 19" LCD but....not all that bad. I am willing to forgo the higher energy bill for a much better display.

Other Thoughts: After talking to people that use hi-def displays at hospitals and seeing that NONE of them prefer LCD's, I reccommend that you buy this!

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Monitor

Pros: These tired old eyes were really struggling with seeing my old 17" monitor. This monitor opened up a whole new world to me. The bigger screen was the major reason for purchasing it but I never dreamed that the color and clarity would also be so much better. When I watch a DVD movie on this momitor, the overall picture quality is just as good as when I watch DVD's on our big high-tech 27" TV. I never expected that but I'll surely take it.

Cons: Not a single con.

Other Thoughts: This monitor is awesome. I've read here where it is mentioned how big it is and how warm it gets. It is obviously bigger across the screen area but it is actually a bit shorter from front to back than my older 17" HP monitor that it replaced. It also doesn't get as warm as that older monitor did. Mine sits on top of a regular large table and not in any type of enclosed area. Maybe that is what makes the difference on the operating temp.

5 out of 5 eggsThe Last of a Dying Breed

Pros: Crisp, sharp picture. Accurate, vibrant colors (when adjusted properly). Capable of extremely high refresh rates at lower resolutions and respectable refresh rates at higher ones. Good (but not perfect) geometry compared to cheaper CRTs. Overall, image quality is excellent at any resolution or refresh rate.

Cons: Slight geometric distortion at the top edges of the screen. Screen size, centering, and geometry requires much adjustment out of the box. Bulky, heavy, and uses a lot of power. Refresh rates below 75 Hz will hurt your eyes a lot, due to the size of the screen.

Other Thoughts: Although the product description lists the AS120-BK as a "flat square tube", the tube isn't actually flat at all. The outer screen is flat, but the interior of the screen is noticably curved. This really isn't a con because CRTs aren't supposed to be flat to begin with ... you can make the outside as flat as you want, but it's still a curved piece of glass on the inside. As others have noted, make sure you have a sturdy desk with plenty of space to accomodate this mighty display.

This is probably one of the last high-quality CRT monitors you'll be able to buy, and it's sad that monitors like this are being phased out by the inferior LCD monitor. LCDs have improved much, but no matter how good they get, they'll never be a suitable replacement for the CRT. That, and I don't feel like replacing the monitor every 3-4 years when the backlight dies. Long live the CRT!

5 out of 5 eggsBest available CRT I can find

Pros: Vibrant, Ample viewing space. excellent refresh rates for gaming. Cheap for its performance.

Cons: Power hungry, heavy, and doubles as a space heater in summertime.

Other Thoughts: My video card gets upwards of 100+ fps on a large portion of my favorite shooters. so I needed a monitor that wouldn't hold my gpu back. 67 lbs is a lot of weight for a desk. so if you get one make sure your desk can handle it.
