The 23" widescreen NEC MultiSync EX231W is a unique blend of form and function in an ultra-slim, lightweight package that is extremely environmentally friendly and packed with features. This Full HD, eco-friendly model is highlighted by LED backlighting which allows the EX231W to consume less power overall, radiate less heat, use less packaging, weigh less, utilize recycled plastics in its production and be free of hazardous materials.

More energy efficient features, like human and ambient light automatic sensors, ECO Mode manual adjustments, Intelligent Power Manager (IPM) and off timer, further promote energy conservation and a lower total cost of ownership. These "green" benefits, when combined with an ergonomic design, USB pass-though, and outstanding screen performance, make the EX231W an ideal choice for corporate and financial users looking for increased productivity and sleek aesthetics.

  • newegg LED Backlight Technology The EX231W uses LED backlighting, which optimizes energy efficiency. Compared to previous generation NEC LCDs, this model consumes up to 52% less power overall, radiates up to 61% less heat, uses up to 15% less packaging, weighs up to 25% less, utilizes recycled plastics in its production and is free of hazardous materials such as mercury, halogen and arsenic.
  • newegg More Green Features The human sensor monitors the presence of a user in front of the display and can go into power saving mode if the user leaves. Users have the ability to adjust the inactivity length and sensor settings. Ambient Light Sensor minimizes power consumption by automatically adjusting the brightness to the optimal setting depending on ambient lighting, screen content or both. Other eco-friendly benefits include ECO Mode, Intelligent Power Manager (IPM) and an off timer for further energy savings, a resettable carbon footprint meter for tracking the conservation of green gas emissions, and a significant reduction in packaging materials.
  • newegg Height-adjust, pivot, tilt and swivel capabilities The NEC MultiSync EX231W features a 4-way ergonomic stand with capabilities of pivot, height-adjustment (up to 110mm), tilt and swivel, allowing you to create an ideal ergonomic display orientation for maximum viewing comfort.
  • newegg Full HD with USB Pass-through, DVI-I and DisplayPort NEC MultiSync EX231W has a native 1920 x 1080 resolution to display Full HD 1080p content without any loss of image quality. USB pass-through on the top of the monitor allows quick connecting of a webcam or simple flash drive access, while DisplayPort makes the EX231W ideal for AMD Eyefinity multi-display configurations to improve productivity.
  • newegg DVM Dynamic Video Mode enhances video and images with real-time optimization of brightness, color and contrast.
  • newegg XtraView XtraView delivers wide viewing angles of up to 176º horizontally and vertically (up to 88º up, down, left and right) with less color shift and without any glare, reflection or distortion.

1 out of 5 eggsLimited warranty!

Pros: Solid monitor, great graphics, overall NEC impressed me so I bought it and trouble free for 1 year. Then the DVI side went south.

Cons: DVI went out after 11 months and they sent me a shipping container free of charge, cool! I paid the 30 bucks shipping to Calif., no prob. They paid the freight back and put a sheet of paper in the box stating "Could not duplicate the problem". I called and could not get any info and I won't even get into the language barrier thing. Went thru the thing using other vid cards, various dvi cables, numerous PC's, and carried it around to other locations to avoid EFI and the like. Bottom line...got one they cannot fix and I am stuck with it, just happy the VGA side works very good. My last NEC, tho!

4 out of 5 eggsgood value, not the best picture

Pros: Excellent ergonomics (height, swivel, angle, and rotation)
Don't have to stack the monitor on top of books or a monitor stand to get the appropriate height
Cheap

Cons: Impossible to get the colors right, especially the lighter colors tend to look washed out.
Viewing angle drastically changes colors.

Other Thoughts: We bought these as the standard monitor for work, not the best but definitely acceptable.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Replaced an old monitor with this one and it's beautiful. Response rate makes it look crisp and colors are deep. No complaints at all.

Cons: None.

3 out of 5 eggsSo-so

Pros: * Plenty of screen real estate
* Bright
* Good controls
* USB port
* Great stand (too many monitors' stands are flimsy these days)
* Ability to adjust monitor height
* Cable management attachments

Cons: Awful top-to-bottom viewing angle - there is a definite tone difference between the top and the bottom of the monitor. I ordered two of these - one for me and one for my wife - and they both suffer from the same thing.

Other Thoughts: Ergonomically, this is a great monitor. Height adjustment, a sturdy stand, and touch controls. However, though the image is sharp, and the colors vibrant, this monitor loses two eggs because of the top-to-bottom viewing angle issues.

I ordered two of these (one was an upgrade to an old Dell 17" LCD, the other an upgrade to a 7-year-old Dell UltraSharp 20"). Even when the monitors are set to what is considered an optimal height, there is very discernible difference in tones from the top to the bottom of both monitors - colors at the top are noticeably darker than those at the bottom (though the side-to-side viewing angle seems more than adequate). The monitors are attached to desktops with completely different video engines (AMD on one, nVidia on the other) and both exhibit the same behavior.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: I just ordered a second one if that tells you anything. Very nice picture. Nice size. Good quality build. Stand is very easy to adjust and get right. Just an all around excellent monitor for the price. Nice, thin bezel.

Cons: Took some time to get the picture calibrated well. Menu buttons take some getting used to.

Other Thoughts: Well, if this monitor were full price I would probably want to give it 4 1/2 eggs. However, at $179.00 it's a definite 5 egg deal. It's a great picture for a TN panel. No, it's not the very best picture available, but it might be the best monitor at it's price. At the sale price you just can't do any better. The off axis color shift is about what you would expect from a TN panel.

The color and brightness are both very good but this isn't a monitor for critical color applications. Response time is good with no ghosting.

5 out of 5 eggsLove these

Pros: The best thing about these monitors is the ability to turn them to portrait mode. I have 3, so my overall display size is 3240x1920. When sitting at the computer, playing games or anything else I need to do its great. Easy to see very clear bright picture.

Cons: Limited inputs.

Other Thoughts: The viewing angle is a little small when in portrait mode. But as long as you adjust them to where your would be sitting, you wont have a problem. I turned the auto adjust off, there were a few times where it would change the brightness and it would get darker than I like.

2 out of 5 eggsNot as advertised

Pros: Swivel base for portrait mode. DisplayPort.

Cons: Display viewability not as advertised.

Other Thoughts: I bought three of these because they had a wide viewing angle, both vertically and horizontally, and because they had a swiveling base which allowed them to be set in portrait mode.

The problem is that the viewing angle is not what is advertised, and when swiveled, the view, even just a couple of degrees off "straight on" results in substantial drop off , and color distortion. For example, shaded text shading is not visible about 10 degrees off "straight on".

Unfortunately, this makes this display not usable for portrait orientation, a feature supported and promoted by a swivel base.

Finally, note that this problem only occurs below center in the normal landscape mode, or left of center in portrait mode.

I know have three monitors which will not do what they were bought for, and expected to do.

3 out of 5 eggsNot The Best, Not The Worst

Pros: The stand is of high quality and is very sturdy. The LED backlight uses about half the power of my old 17" CCFL monitor. Text is easy to read even at a small size. Overall good color quality (some colors such as blue look very nice and vibrant while others look a bit washed out). Decent response time and I have no problems playing high speed games.

Cons: The brightness of the monitor is inconsistant, with the top of the screen being slightly dark and getting brighter and brighter towards the bottom. It seems to be more noticable when web browsing and less noticable while gaming or watching videos. There's also some color dithering going on that can be noticed at times, especially when I run it at a non-native resolution. Also I hear some popping and cracking sounds for a few minutes everytime I power up the monitor which appear to be caused by thermal expansion. It doesn't do it as much now as it did when I first got the monitor and my old monitor did the same thing so it's not that big a deal to me but it might be to others.

Other Thoughts: I bought this monitor to replace my seven year old NEC Multisync 1735NXM and so far it's been an improvement in all respects except for the inconsistant brightness and the popping sounds when first powering up the monitor (both problems that monitor suffered from as well). The stand is what makes this monitor for me. I have a small desk and my speakers are almost 8 inches tall and needed a monitor with adjustable height to be able to get the monitor above my speakers and this seemed to be the best choice. I would have preferred a little more improvement in the picture quality and it's strange that after seven years this monitor still suffers from some of the same problems my old one did. Unless you can find this monitor for under 200 including shipping I can't really recommend this monitor.

3 out of 5 eggsMediocre

Pros: Very light monitor. Nice, clean industrial design. Decent price.

Cons: I should preface this by saying I use a 27" Apple Cinema Display at work, which is hands down the nicest monitor I've ever seen and makes me a tough critic. That said, I find this monitor produce very washed-out/unsaturated colors. There is also a brightness gradient going from the top to the bottom of the monitor when looking at it dead on (top is more dim).

Other Thoughts: The control interface isn't the best. At this price point I'm sure you could do better.
