5 out of 5 eggsA bargin

Pros: Business quality monitor

Excellent and instant screen format adjustment when using with a kvm switch between multiple machines/resolutions.

Stand allows keyboard to be placed under monitor to save space and is very stable.

Price is excellent even for a used unit.

Much better than a new low quality off brand as it just works under all conditions with no firmware glitches.

I bought two of these and they both were in great shape with little to no obvious wear/abuse.

Both units were well packed and work great.

Cons: One unit had the wrong cable and screws were to short to fasten connector to the monitor. Luckily I had correct cable in my spare parts pile.

Other Thoughts: I think that even if you got two and one was dead, you would still have more than if you bought a cheap new unit and it never worked well due to inferior design and production quality!

4 out of 5 eggsNEC Monitor

Pros: Cheap, no dead pixels, comes with a nice base, and works great when on.

Cons: When turned off or in standby mode (green light turns orange) a loud high pitched humming noise is emitted from the top portion of the monitor. I cant go without a monitor so, for right now, I just unplug it when it is not in use. I got the extended warranty so I am not too concerned. I just hope it doesn't die on me until the semester is up.

Other Thoughts: Mine was very clean and came with a VGA cable.

5 out of 5 eggsSurprisingly Nice

Pros: Price, free shipping, no dead pixels, very clean, easy intuitive front buttons with a nifty little directional nub that allows you to move the cursor through the menus. The auto-adjustment worked well and it set itself up with just a few button clicks.

Cons: No DVI Cable, power cable is basically tied in a big knot.

Other Thoughts: Like others have stated, this is not refurbished. USED is a little more accurate. Unlike the other reviews, mine came in a remarkable clean "Grade A" condition. I'm pretty amazed. It is a 5:4 ratio with a resolution of 1280x1024. Zero dead pixels! The height adjustable base works like a charm too. There is no way to tell how many hours these have on them. I spent a lot of time researching and even downloaded and installed NEC's NaviSet software. No help. If anyone can figure out how to get into some kind of service menu on the monitor, post it here.

4 out of 5 eggsit works...looks a bit beat though

Pros: CHEAP. Very cheap. DVI and VGA. NEC build quality, the AK-47 of monitors (and it shows). I have all expectations of this thing performing well over its life. Also, out of the 3 I got, no dead pixels. 1280x1024 resolution, pretty high for something this price and size. Same old classic 4:3 aspect ratio for people who actually want to do work on a computer.

Also, I found that these have a hard power on/off switch on the back in addition to the soft power switch on the front. I like this but it is sorta lame to have an end user call you and say "yes, I pressed the power button, but it still won't turn on" and I have to tell them that there are two power switches.

Cons: All three that I got look absolutely BEAT. The cases are scratched, have sharpie on them, tape bits, sticky goo, and crusty *other* on them. I honestly don't think these are refurbished at all, since I found tape on one that was covering the two halves of the case that was not removed. Probably pulled from a working environment is more like it. I cannot tell how many hours are on the bulbs in them, or how long they have to go. I wish the refurbisher/packer would have had the people from whom they purchased the monitors wipe them off with a baby wipe before they handed them off to be sold.

They only give you a VGA cable. My VGA came attached by standard VGA screw fasteners (ban on the word "scr*wed" in this context???) into the back of the 3 monitors. There were also standard issue 3 prong AC cords in the box, but they fitted a bit loosely. Moving the monitor turned it off. Reseating the power cable fixed it. Replacing the power cable with a snugger one fixed it.

Other Thoughts: I will keep buying these as Point of Sale (P oh S is also banned) monitors. Nice and cheap and nothing fancy. The cosmetics leave many things to be desired, but from what I can tell, these monitors will work for a while.

5 out of 5 eggsIt Works!!

Pros: Well, it worked! I was a litle worried buying a refurbished monitor but at the price they had I could not resist.

Cons: Not really a con but I bought it for my gf who claimed it would not stay on. I came home and found that she just didn't plug it in all the way. the chord goes wayyy up inside this thing.

3 out of 5 eggsIt's a mixed bag

Pros: It's a robust, well-made NEC monitor. Good thing, too, considering the shabby treatment it has had in its short lifetime. If it were a dog, it would probably have had a starring role on an episode of Animal Cops Houston.

Unbelievably, the particular one I got worked okay, including all pixels working properly.

They include a standard VGA cable, but no DVI.

Cons: "Refurbished" "REFURBISHED???" Are you serious? I guess it's "refurbished" if you can include "Picking It Out of The Dumpster and Putting It In A Box" in the term. The one I got was Positively Filthy. It took 15 minutes with paper towels, cotton balls, and isopropyl alcohol to restore it to presentable condition. It was disgusting. Cracker crumbs. Fingerprints everywhere. Goo on the case. Goo streaked across the screen, that I thought was some pretty nasty scratching until it came off, eventually.

The cables were twist-tied and thrown loose in the box. It's just a matter of luck that the sharp parts of the cables don't scratch the screen, since there's no protection at all for the monitor outside of structured foam.

Other Thoughts: As you may have picked up, I think the term "refurbished" as applied to this product is a stretch at best. A "fib" is more like it. "Refurbished" was almost certainly nothing more than a 30-second functional test. I doubt that anyone looked at the CCFL, much less replaced it with a new one. It's anyone's guess how many hours are on it and how many hours it has left. The appropriate condition is "Heavily (ab)used, functionally tested".

Overall, I suppose it was worth the $50 if you have a use for an old, beat-up 4:3 format CCFL monitor. (Which I did) Just don't expect Scarlett Johansson because you'll most likely get Maude McCurdycutty, who chain smokes.
