1 out of 5 eggsAcer X1261P Projector

Pros: Affordable

Cons: Uses a 3 PIN FEMALE PS2 style jack for RS 232. Impossible to use. Hours on the phone w/ ACER. They didn't have a clue either.

4 out of 5 eggsPost-ownership review

Pros: Price!
Brightness & Contrast Ratio.
Small, Quiet.
Decent resolution and supports 1600x1200

Cons: No air filters!
Moving parts (fans and color wheel) seem low quality

Other Thoughts: I am revisiting my review 2 years after purchase with my experiences.

This was a fantastic projector for the price and served me well for almost exactly 2 years, a good investment. I never had to buy a new bulb even with pretty heavy use, though the brightness was obviously diminished by the end of its tenure. This projector went with me on two cross-country moves and spent a year in a bachelor pad which was a smoking environment. It also was moved around quite a bit to different venues. The projector held up and functioned very well, except for the two following issues...

11 months after purchase, both the fan and color wheel started acting up, causing the projector to automatically shut down. Acer replaced these parts for free as it was still in warranty, and their service only took about a week total (including shipping times).
after another year, the fan started acting up yet again. Since it was out of Acer warranty, I sent it to ServiceNet (I had purchased the 2 year extended plan) who refunded the purchase price with basically no-questions-asked.

Bottom line- this is a nice projector and the price is certainly right, I still rate it 4 Eggs. I would certainly recommend it both to people looking for an "entry-level" projector and to those who have owned projectors in the past but who are not looking to spend the big bucks. Unless you have owned a really nice projo in the past, you will not likely be disappointed.
But I would advise against using it in dusty or smoking environments. Expect to have some issues with the moving parts (fan & color wheel) and definitely get the extended ServiceNet warranty!

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent

Pros: WOW! Can't beat the black friday price on this bad boy. Pretty Decent actually for what I use it for as a theater system on a 100" screen.

Cons: Like any projector. It throws off heat, almost could use it as a heater for the winter. If your like everyone else who wants to use the ECO setting to save an extra 1,000 hrs on the bulb, your wasting your time. You may cut the fan noise down and its pretty quite but your sacrificing the entire thing to over heat and shut off. I had this happen once. Took off the ECO setting and yes i here the fan a little bit & loosing the 1,000hrs of life, but no big deal. No issues afterwards. Common since says, there is a fan in there for a reason, I suggest you use it. You get what you pay for. I do agree though that manufacturer should of made that better if your going to have a ECO Setting on the system.

Other Thoughts: If your on a low budget like me, this is your projector. It does the job and quality is great. If your looking for long life hrs on the bulb and even better quailty, save up and buy one that will cost you over 1,000.

4 out of 5 eggsFirst Projector Love

Pros: Love the price and quality. It was the best quarter-life crisis buy. I have it hooked up to my xbox and speakers and it impresses anyone who sees it. I would definitely recommend this model to anyone.

Cons: My only con would be the fact that it is almost completely silent. Which i love and hate. Being it silent, there aren't fans inside kicking that hot air out. Which runs the risk of overheating and damaging itself. I've only had one emergency shut down (after an all day gaming session with friends). And just be aware that this model does NOT have an HDMI port.

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent Picture

Pros: I actually bought the little brother to this:XP1161P3D. That machine lasted 16 months before coming down with a case of slow death by DMD chip. The screen was filling with white dots (pixelating). Acer fixed it for $211.32 and because I bought it with a Capital One Visa Card they extended the warranty to two years and paid for the repair. I only paid for shipping which was under $20.
Why then am I commenting here? The process of repair and reimbursement took nearly four months (mostly me being overcautious). In the interim I picked up a used X1261P for under $200 and was even more impressed with the projected picture. I say go for it.
I am not sure I would recommend getting extended warranty coverage. While cheap, Acer may refuse to fix your unit if it has too many problems because they have a flat $199.00+tax repair fee structure. All other repair shops I contacted refuse Acer projectors because they just cost too much to fix. Thus the extended warranty company will reimburse the amt paid for the policy and leave you hanging.

Cons: Like all DLP projectors, TV's and projector TV's before them the DMD chip may go bad. There are hundreds of thousands of miniature mirrors that vibrate at incredible speed. If the unit shuts down, like mine did several times probably from too much humidity, the fans shut off and heat builds up. The DMD chip warps ever so slightly and begins to fail. It may or may not be a drop in replacement. The service manual is available for download for free but it does not reveal if the unit will need recalibration after replacing the DMD chip. This chip also costs around $150 and can be ruined during replacement. Buyer be warned!

Other Thoughts: I love this machine and have over 1000 hours on both units. Paired with a Da-Lite screen and a decent HTPC media machine your face will fill with joy. I built my own HTPC machine. It took over a year to get it right but after playing shoot-em-up on a 106" screen in surround sound the effort was worth it.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome picture compared to older DLPs

Pros: Picture is great, bright enough for massive screens (15 ft+) in my opinion, comes with cables and carrying bag.

Cons: None for the price. If I wanted to spend more, I would have went for a native widescreen one with digital inputs.

Other Thoughts: Most definitely worth what I payed.

3 out of 5 eggsjust be aware of problems

Pros: I have the ACER PROJECTOR X1261 DLP,which I purchased from Newegg 9/8/2010. The Picture is wonderful. Movies, television, dvd, blu-ray all are great to watch.

Cons: I am not sure it is built to hold up. But before I explain this I have to say that I use this as my television and movie theater. So it is on a lot of hours per day. But about 3 months before my warranty ran out I had to send this in to have the color wheel replaced. about 3 months after my warranty ran out a little white dot appeared on the screen. A couple days later anotherthen another until more than 1/2 of my screen has these little white dots. Acer says for $199.00 + tax ( they won't tell me whose tax or which states tax) they will repair it. They won't tell me what is wrong with it. They won't even say if it is the bulb that is causing this. After reading online I found out it is pixilating, But Acer won't say this. Acer says pay the $199.00 + tax and they will tell me where to send it.

After saying all of this I have to repeat that I love the picture I get with this

5 out of 5 eggsNice for the price

Pros: Nice image, a few plugs in the back(vga,s-video,rca), Very large screen. Bright enough to see during day in low light. Nice remote

Cons: Not True 1080p, Only overlay on 1024x768. Highest True res that i was able to get was 1600X1200 still not bad.

Other Thoughts: The image is not bad at all for most movies. Do not have blue-ray so res is fine for me. Not to great for video games in my opinion would rather have a big 1080p HDTV but it serves its purpose can play Skyrim in 1600x1000 looks cool on 100+" screen.

4 out of 5 eggsVery nice for the price.

Pros: The main thing I love about this projector is how far away it will project an image. I have mine set right at 16.5ft and my screen size is right about 120" and it is very clear. For the price it is a great entry level projector. Excellent for movies and playing games.

Cons: Could have come with a 4-pin S-video connector. It has been a pain finding one that converts to composite. Also cannot get the projector to show in its native resolution. Controller is horrible.
