2 out of 5 eggsGreat display, terrible noise

Pros: This is a really fantastic display. Colors and clarity definitely live up to the rave review by tom's hardware. Even the case is very elegant.

Cons: The one, fatal flaw is the high pitched buzzing noise that this display emits. As you adjust brightness the frequency and volume of the buzzing changes, but it never entirely disappears. The only times I don't hear the buzzing is when my laptop's fans are running full blast and the display is at its blinding brightest. For me at least, the sound makes these displays (I bought two) unusable.

Also worth noting is the fact these displays I bought are not defective, but just designed poorly. Quote from an email exchange with Planar's support:
"Thank you for contacting Planar Online Support. PXL2790MW monitors and both emit a high pitched buzzing sound are "inherent to the design of the display." If you can hear and you do not like the noise, I definitely go with a different model but we have lots of other models available."

Other Thoughts: Unfortunately, these are going back for a refund.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat monitor

Pros:
Absolutely perfectly crisp, clean display quality. I'm primarily a text processing type of user (programming, documentation writing), but also CAD (mostly 2D, some 3D). Occasionally I edit images.

So far, this monitor has lived up to my expectations for a "best in class" display for professional computing. It is also very good looking.

High pitched whine that some people whine about went away after a few days, or else I became conditioned to it and just can't perceive it anymore. Either way, there is no problem.

Can double as a room light if cranked to max brightness, or else can offer satisfactory brightness as an operating room display.

Retains acceptable contrast when brightness is set to zero. Can be dialed down enough to not cause headaches when viewing at night in a dimly lit room.

Good UI controls, and US based manufacturer (assembled in China), 3yr warranty, no bad pixels. I didn't buy a drop ship from Korea monitor since I wanted Planar's bonded glass tech., and a good UI.

Cons:
At first, I noticed the high pitched whine that other people had also heard. But after 1-3 days, it either disappeared or I just became used to it and effectively can't hear it anymore.

Too big--I'd prefer a 23-24 inch 2k monitor, but they don't exist.

The only other thing that bugs me is it's too bright!!! I have the brightness turned to 0, and I adjust the contrast btw 10 (night time) to 30-40 (day). That is bright enough. I can't fault Planar too much, because all the other monitors are the same way.

The AR coated glossy glass surface shows up fingerprints and spots very easily, so this display needs more frequent wiping with a very clean slightly damp cotton washrag to get the dirt off and also not leave streaks.

Only tilt adjust.

Other Thoughts:
None of the cons would stop me from buying another. In fact, I had bought one at work, then bought one for home a few weeks later. I'm tempted now to try a 4k monitor because I'm still zooming in CAD apps and repositioning my many windows a little too often, but I'd still buy another one of these if I need a good monitor without ridiculous resolution.

Power consumption [brightness], [contrast], [W]:
100, 50, 73
50, 50, 58
0, 50, 42
Measured with Kill-A-Watt.

5 out of 5 eggsWhine Fix

Pros: Excellent display, incredible clarity.

Cons: High pitched whine, which can be avoided by increasing the brightness to 100%

5 out of 5 eggsClassy looking

Pros: Crisp image and text; nice color (photos look great); very attractive overall appearance.

Cons: The glass face is edge to edge, but the screen is much smaller with over an inch of black border on all sides, plus another inch or so of bottom frame where the OSD buttons are. Not a big deal, but I didn't want to leave this space empty.

Other Thoughts: Mine looks wonderful. Yes, there is some backlight bleed, but not nearly as much as my good old HP W2408h which sits beside it. Even though the face is glass, there is some sort of anti-reflective treatment similar to that which is on the glasses I wear. The mentioned HP has a glossy screen, so I can compare directly the reflections of lights and windows. The Planar is noticeably less reflective and as I write this in my living room in bright daylight next to a large window, I see nothing of distraction on my screen.

1 out of 5 eggsunbearable high pitched frequency

Pros: beautiful design and picture quality

Cons: Extremely disappointed. When powered on the monitor was emitting a high pitched frequency from the rear that caused bad headache nausea after only 1 hour of use. 2 replacements were sent, both with the same problem. Tested various outlets, rooms, video connections, and none produced any encouraging results. Spent plenty of time talking to Planar customer service and engineers looking for a fix, however there appears to be none. Beware anyone with sensitive ears.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing QHD Display

Pros: Okay, I didn't get this on Newegg, but I still have to rave about this display. Late last year I replaced my first-gen Core i7 box with a Haswell box and an R9 290, and having that much graphics power made me want to upgrade my old 24-inch display. I did a ton of research, but then I found this.

First, it's beautiful. The design is a bit iMac-ish, but where it really shows is in the bezel. Imagine a 27-inch iPad or iPhone screen, and thats' sort of what you get here. The front is completely flat, and it's a bit hard to see where the display ends and the bezel begins. It's a glossy black monolith just waiting for you to turn it on.

Then you turn it on, and it's beautiful. Toms Hardware raved how sharp it is, and it is. The colors are a bit bright on the factory setting, but I lowered the brightness and tweaked them just a tad, and everything looks great on this screen.

It's not 4K, but good luck trying to drive any game at native 4K resolution without investing $1,000 in dual, high-end GPUs and 1,000-watt power supplies. However, Quad HD (2560x1440) is perfectly within the range of an R9 290, so I've played BF4 at native res and it's gorgeous. It's even better for Windows usage, as I used to do dual 24s, but now I can do full-size windows side-by-side on this. It's even better for Lightroom, as I can have all the sidebars on and it doesn't reduce the size of the central image to a cramped window.

This is seriously one of the best hardware purchases I've ever made. Go get one if you're debating it; you won't regret it.

Cons: Planar needs to get some gloves to its factory workers, cause mine came with fingerprints on that gorgeous, black glass out of the box.

Also, had to snap the bezel at the top, as it had come slightly apart, but it's been no issue since.

I don't even bother with the tiny built-in speakers; I'd rather Planar had put in USB 3.0 ports.

1 out of 5 eggsVery dissapointing

Pros: Incredibly bright display. Colors are amazing, very deep and rich. Clarity of even plain text is quite impressive.

Cons: I bought two of these for home use. First one out of the box looked perfect. The high pitched whine it made was the first problem... then the green (sometimes red) vertical line drawing in the middle of the screen hit. Tapping the monitor made the line go away... for a minute or two, then it was back. Line is present in POST. Couldnt get whine to go away using any of the available connection options.

Second monitor out of the box had the top middle of the display separated as the other reviewer mentioned. It snapped into place easily enough. This monitor had 4 completely white pixels, and the right third of the display had tremendous backlight bleeding.

Other Thoughts: I wanted to love this monitor. It's form factor is pleasing, and at first sight the display was simply stunning. Then the problems started mounting up and I couldn't maintain my enthusiasm. 2 out of 2 bad... that's the only chance I'll give this brand/model.

5 out of 5 eggs4k killer

Pros: As other reviews have stated it is very bright. I'm used to working and gaming on a 1920 x 1080 monitor and the extra real estate is perfect. If I can imagine a 4k monitor for PC use it seems to me that it would be just too much this resolution seems perfect. I might look back at that comment in the future and laugh but it really does feel like the right number of pixels to me. The clarity is highly boasted on Toms hardware and it should be. it is very clear. The quality of the materials used seems very high, almost like an apple cinema display but black. I also love the vesa ability.

Cons: The plastic bezel on the top of the screen was slightly separated from the frame of the monitor upon unboxing but I applied light pressure and it snapped into place perfectly. That was strange but not enough to dock an egg.

Other Thoughts: within 5 minutes i was trying to play BF3 at 1440P on this thing and even with my crossfire monster cards it seemed a little jumpy but strangely that went away after a day. Wonder if maybe it had to be broken in like some people have mentioned.

5 out of 5 eggsMac Daddy of 1440p

Pros: Color accuracy, 106% of SRGB, text clarity. Greyscale superiority.

If you are a fan of Apple Cinema Displays you have found its replacement.

DP, DVI, HDMI

Beautifully crafted piece of art.

First display where the IPS panel is bonded TO the glass. No gap at all, this fusion creates much more text + image clarity!

Cons: Ergonomically limited to tilt only. No USB ports.
