What is an LED monitor?

The term "LED monitor" generally refers to a monitor with an LCD panel and an LED backlight. A typical LCD monitor uses cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFL) as a light source to illuminate the LCD panel. In an LED backlit monitor, white LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) are used as the light source. Environmentally-friendly LED backlights provide the following benefits:

  • About 50%* less power consumption compared to traditional CCFL monitor
  • Mega dynamic contrast ratios. Provider deeper blacks and richer colors.
  • Environmentally-friendly mercury-free backlight
  • Low EMI (Electro Magnetic Interference)
  • Slimmer design
  • Weight reduction

Save Cash and Save the Planet

With its mercury-free backlight and low energy consumption, the ENERGY STAR certified VA2231wm-LED is not only environmentally friendly but also friendly on your electricity bill as well. This can add up to thousands of dollars saved for large install bases, such as big corporate buildings or schools, the savings can be as dramatic as $20,000* in five years!

10,000,000:1 MEGA Dynamic Contrast Ratio

One of the great features of VA2231wm-LED is its ability to dim the backlight completely for pure darkness during dark scenes such as a night shot in a movie. Contrast ratios refer to the ratio of the brightest color to the darkest color. With traditional CCFL backlit displays, contrast ratios are limited to the fluorescent lamp’s ability to dim in order to reproduce darkness. However, with the LED backlight, each LED has the ability to completely shut off allowing for a near infinite ratio of black to white contrast. The end result is true blacks that result in greater overall image quality.

Full HD 1080p resolution

The VA2231wm-LED features a 22" (21.5" viewable) widescreen with 1920x1080 resolution is capable of displaying a native Full HD 1080p image. Today, devices that can display Full HD content output are getting more and more common. However, without a native Full HD display, you will not be able to experience the picture clarity and the details of the 1080p content you view.

Pair it with a ViewSonic or Mac computer

One of the key advantages of the VA2231wm-LED monitor is its diverse connectivity options, making it flexible to be paired with a PC or a Mac computer. ViewSonic has recently announced a full line of PC products, including PC Minis and all-in-one PCs. Now you can hook up any Viewsonic PC as well as a MacBook or a Mac Mini to the VA2231wm-LED and enjoy a full 22" (21.5" viewable) widescreen with LED backlight!

VESA mountable

The VA2231wm-LED features a 100mm x 100mm VESA mountable design that allows you to mount it on a monitor stand or on a wall, depending on your specific needs. You can detach the base easily by unscrewing four screws and then mounting the display on its new stand or wall mount.

Eco-mode for up to 35%* energy savings

ViewSonic's proprietary Eco-mode function comes standard with the VA2231wm-LED. When you don't need all of the powerful features the VA2231wm-LED has to offer, you have the option to reduce the monitor's brightness, save energy, save the planet and prolong the lamp life. You can select one of the "Optimize" or "Conserve" options and save up to 35%* energy. Especially under low ambient light conditions, adjusting the brightness will improve visibility by reducing eye fatigue. Reducing brightness will also prolong the monitor's lamp life, improving your return on investment. *Energy savings may vary based on actual usage and other factors.

The best pixel performance guarantee and 3-year limited warranty

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Little Monitors

Pros: -Even backlighting
-Crisp, accurate colors
-Excellent contrast and detail
-VESA mounts
-Very good value
-Don't look too bad sitting on my desk

Cons: -Lousy speakers
-Doesn't edit the photos for me

Other Thoughts: I cannot speak to the quality of the included monitor stands but they looked decent. I got two of these as they were the largest monitors I could fit on the dual monitor stand issued by my employer. While they are admittedly nothing like the Samsungs I have at home they also cost about 1/4 as much so that's not a fair comparison. I use them for image editing and have been thoroughly impressed. At this price point you aren't going to find better backlighting or more consistent color. Highly recommended.

As to the other reviewers who lament the lack of included DVI cables, this is clearly stated in the description so that doesn't seem like a fair criticism. As the the speakers problem, I have yet to see a monitor with built-in speakers that weren't terrible. This is probably why I have also never seen a high end monitor ($600+ or so) that had this feature. They work well enough for business use, and in an office headphones are a better choice anyway.

1 out of 5 eggsGrey horizontal lines

Pros: It's a monitor. It basically does its job.

Cons: Out of the box, subtle grey horizontal lines appear permanently across the entire screen, especially noticeable in large white areas. It's almost like a pinstripe effect like you'd see in old versions of Mac OS X. Except it's not supposed to be there. It's not quite distracting enough to prevent me from using it, just... I knew this monitor was a budget model, so I didn't expect much, but this is pretty disappointing.

Also: the 'dynamic contrast' feature, which makes the display brighter or dimmer at seemingly random times, and is on by default, was extremely annoying. But it was easy enough to turn off using the front panel buttons, once I found the option.

Other Thoughts: Like most cheap monitors, it does not come with a DVI cable. I can't fault it for that; most people will never even know the difference.

I am using a DVI cable I purchased separately, but it did not improve the grey lines issue described above.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Great price & clear picture

Cons: Speaker quality is terrible.

Other Thoughts: I took an egg off the the speaker quality, yes its that bad, if your going to include speakers atleast make sure they sound ok, I had hoped to not have to buy speakers for this system, but turns out I will.

4 out of 5 eggsWorth the money

Pros: Very sharp display. Good widescreen format with a large range of resolutions. Good for general work and for gaming.

Cons: No left to right rotation, you have to move the base. No DVI-D Cable or adapter (Reason for 4 stars instead of 5). Do NOT get this monitor if you plan on splitting the source, quality degrades much more then normal.

Other Thoughts: Haven't really used the speakers, so I don't know what the quality is on them. However, I will continue to buy from ViewSonic exclusively for my home use. They have yet to disappoint me.

4 out of 5 eggsgreat monitor

Pros: 1080p, not very tall, looks good, energy-saving LED backlight

Cons: DVI cable not included. Not even a DVI to VGA converter included.

Other Thoughts: ViewSonic is becoming a bunch of cheap-o's. DVI is better than VGA so why not supply the better cable if you are going to supply at least one. 4 eggs. I would have given 5 if a DVI cable was included.

3 out of 5 eggsOk, but no DVI cable

Pros: Affordable
Built in speakers are handy if you don't have any

Cons: Does not ship with a DVI cable, only an analog D-sub cable. (Has a DVI port, just no cable)
Front panel buttons are just awful to work with

Other Thoughts: Seriously irritated about the lack of a DVI cable, had I checked the photos a little better I might have noticed that but... why wouldn't it come with one? Hooking it up with the analog cable resulted in a washed out picture, bought a DVI cable and now it looks pretty good. Protip: If you ship a digital monitor with just one cable because you're too cheap to include both, you should probably make it the one that's actually DIGITAL. /cable rage

Front buttons are mushy and unresponsive, badly labeled and unintuitive. Still, the screen is decent, high res for it's size, no bad pixels, base is solid and stable. All in all not too bad, but the lack of a DVI cable is mind-numbingly frustrating; would be 4 eggs if it had one included.
