What is a LED monitor?

The term "LED monitor" generally refers to a monitor with a LCD panel and a LED backlight. A typical LCD monitor uses cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFL) as a light source to illuminate the LCD panel. In an LED backlit monitor, white LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) are used as the light source. Environmentally friendly LED backlights provide the following benefits:

  • About 40%* less power consumption compared to traditional CCFL monitor
  • 30,000,000:1 MEGA Dynamic Contrast Ratio
  • Environmentally friendly mercury-free backlight
  • Low EMI (Electro Magnetic Interference)
  • Slimmer design
  • Weight reduction

Save cash and save the planet

With its mercury-free backlight and low energy consumption, the ENERGY STAR certified VX2370Smh-LED saves your electricity bill. The savings of LED can add up to thousands of dollars saved for large install bases, such as big corporate buildings or schools. The savings can be as dramatic as $20,000 in five years!

sRGB Color Correction Technology Delivers the Most Accurate Color Performance Available

ViewSonic LED monitors embedded sRGB color correction technology reproduce 100% sRGB rich color for color performance matching original input sources without decreasing or leveraging color quality. sRGB ensures all displayed images/videos are as natural as the original sources, displaying real color for captured camera and camcorder content.

Mega Dynamic Contrast Ratio

One of the great features of VX2370Smh-LED is its ability to dim the backlight completely for pure darkness during dark scenes, such as a night shot in a movie. Contrast ratios refer to the ratio of the brightest color to the darkest color. With traditional CCFL backlit displays, contrast ratios are limited to the fluorescent lamp's ability to dim, in order to reproduce darkness. However, with the LED backlight, each LED has the ability to completely shut-off allowing for a near infinite ratio of black to white contrast. The end result is true blacks that result in greater overall image quality.

Full HD 1080p resolution

The VX2370Smh-LED features a 23" widescreen with 1920x1080 resolution is capable of displaying a native Full HD 1080p image. Today, devices that can display Full HD content output are getting more and more common. However, without a native Full HD display, you will not be able to experience the picture clarity and the details of the 1080p content you view.

Eco-mode for up to 30%* energy savings

ViewSonic's proprietary Eco-mode function comes standard with the VX2370Smh-LED. When you don't need all the power the VX2370Smh-LED has to offer, you have the option to reduce the monitor's brightness, save energy, save the planet and prolong the lamp life. You can select one of the "Optimize" or "Conserve" options and save up to 30% energy. Especially under low ambient light conditions, adjusting the brightness will improve visibility by reducing eye fatigue. Reducing brightness will also prolong the monitor's lamp life, improving your return on investment.

2 out of 5 eggsVery disappointing

Pros: Sharp, clear, bright
Very thin and light

Cons: Not even close to being a 23" screen

Other Thoughts: I've been using ViewSonic monitors since the old CRT days, so when I wanted to upgrade my old 22" to a full HD monitor, I bought this one. What I thought I was getting was a monitor with a slightly larger screen, and better resolution. What I got was the better resolution, but in a 21" display...and I know it's 21" because I measured it. The physical bezel is very thin, but as some others have mentioned, there's actually a dead space between the bezel and the actual screen as displayed. On the left and right sides, this is roughly 3/4" of nothing, and around 3/8" on the top and bottom.

I'm very disappointed. I feel as though ViewSonic lied, or let the marketing people run wild. (Same thing? Probably.) It's a little more than 22" from corner to corner of the bezel, but all that blank area shrinks the actual screen size to 21" diagonally.

It's very sharp, though, and may or may not be worth the time and effort to send it back. Not what I thought I was buying, though. Be aware.

5 out of 5 eggsView Sonic VX2370Smh

Pros: Never a problem, using in a business environment, many workstations have dual monitor setups. I don't require high quality speakers on a workstation as opposed to gaming PC, so I.don't have to buy speakers, Quality monitor.

Cons: Zero after several years of using this same monitor and it's predecessors. VGA/DVI/HDMI, connectivity versatility for any situation I encounter - other than a display port, which is rare w/our standard PC profile.

Other Thoughts: Great for dual monitor config's

5 out of 5 eggsGreat monitor, excellent price

Pros: -Sharp picture
-Good colors
-Thin Bezel
-Price ($120 when I purchased)
-No dead, bright, or dark pixels
-Excellent viewing angles
-Built in speakers (not great but better than I expected)

Cons: -No height adjustment (though it does tilt)
-As others have mentioned the button placement isn't ideal, though the buttons light up when the monitor is on so they are not hard to find and just take a bit of getting used to.
-Blindingly bright out of the box (forced me to figure out the button situation right away though.)

Other Thoughts: Very pleased with the monitor and would definitely recommend it. Fortunately, I got it for a low price but would be more than happy even at current price.

4 out of 5 eggsAmazing quality

Pros: -Sharp but not too sharp
-Color is great
-Frameless
-Very classy
-Decent integrated speakers
-Very cheap

Cons: -None that matter

Other Thoughts: An extremely stylish and good monitor. One problem I had right out of the box was that the picture coming out didn't fill the screen, but I fixed that easily with my card drivers. other than that, no problem at all with this, Very happy with it.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat affordable mornitior for Eyefinity

Pros: no dead pixels
got 3x of them
Mini DP + DVI eyefinity setup works great
colors are good
refresh rate is good
very good packaging

Cons: a bit of tearing in iRacing but my GPU is aging (687X 2GB from 2011)
the stand is stiff and very stable but only offers tilting as an adjustment - be mindful of that

Other Thoughts: got myself a 3x 23" Eyefinity setup for <350usd thanks to promo codes. Hard to beat back then and still a very accessible option to get started in Eyefinity

1 out of 5 eggsDisappointed

Pros: Good looking. Solid Stand. IPS monitor. Low $$.

Cons: Controls, Quality, DIM.

Other Thoughts: Monitor arrived with two vertical gray blotches that ran through the entire screen. Stood right out on a white background. Had to RMA. The location of the controls is unacceptable. They are buried under the monitor, hard to get to, and provide zero tactile feedback. Obviously, very little thought went into the functional design of this monitor. The picture was OK, although I found it to be annoyingly DIM and the whites seemed off. I just couldn't calibrate it to my liking. In fairness, this may have been because the unit I had was obviously defective.

4 out of 5 eggsSoftware bezel :(

Pros: Great picture quality, good speakers, etc.

Cons: The pictures make it appear to have a very thin bezel. It actually has about a half-inch wide border on the actual display itself that I'm calling a software bezel. It's just black and creates a kind of letterbox effect. I bought two to use side-by-side, and the bezel ruins the flow.

1 out of 5 eggsWashed out colors

Pros: Energy Efficient
Lightweight
Thin Bezel
Built-in Speakers

Cons: Washed out colors
Poor White Balance
Built-in Speakers
Inaccessible Controls

Other Thoughts: Nice looking monitor when it is off. It is LED, so it is energy efficient, and stays very cool. It's also extremely lightweight for it's size, which is nice. Other than that, not a very good monitor for average users. The first thing I noticed was that the whites were way off, and no matter the adjustments made, I could never get white, so all the other colors just looked wrong. Now, I want to VERY clear here, as I had a hard time trying to find this next piece of info. While it's been stated this is edge to edge glass, it is covered with a matte screen. You will never have the bright colors and super crisp text that just pop from a glossy screen. However, if your sitting behind a window, then this is probably a good thing for you. The matte screen is what probably ruins the picture on this monitor, and judging by some of the good reviews, it's entirely possible the quality control on this one piece may be poor, and some of us are getting bad matte covers.

The monitor has built-in speakers. Of course, with such a thin monitor, one would not expect much. They are much worse than expected, though. After an audio test with my iPad, the iPad won (by a HUGE margin) for better sound reproduction. Though the monitor could get louder, it was like listening to it through a metal straw. I also have an old Toshiba laptop that sounds far superior. You won't want to use those speakers solely.

The controls are another poor aspect of the monitor. They are practically hidden on the pedestal below the screen. They are also glass touch controls, so there are no raised buttons to feel for. You must literally duck below your screen to see where to touch, and even then they are labeled poorly. Just a 1, 2, power symbol, up, and down. 1 ends up being a menu and back key while 2 becomes and enter or select key. Again you have to look at the screen to see the menu and adjustments then hunch under your screen to see where to touch, then back up to look at the screen, then hunch back down, then look back up and so on for every adjustment with the controls.

5 out of 5 eggsNice Piece of Hardware

Pros: The bezel is extremely thin, and the panel is only about a half of an inch thick at the most. The price is really good for an IPS monitor. I like that it has the speakers even if they are not fantastic. They really simplify your desktop if you don't want a dedicated sound system. This is definitely a quality purchase if you are looking to put together a multi-screen setup or just a single screen workstation.

Cons: I wish the base were removable and that it had an inboard power supply, but I understood what I was getting before I ordered. It's the price you pay for razor thin panels.
