2 out of 5 eggsDo not buy a monitor online

Pros: Big, very high resolution, no dead pixels.

Cons: Very hot when working, inconvenient control buttons, misleading button labels. DVI input is not working properly.

Other Thoughts: This is a second review as it seems I cannot edit my first one. First monitor was DOA and I had to mail it back (additional $20). Second time it took 4 days to deliver the package even though Newegg's warehouse is just 20 min away from me.
After opening the box I found that the monitor is not new (well, I paid for a new one). The metal connector panel was badly bent so it was very hard to connect a DVI connector. I have pictures but there is no way to attach them here. This time monitor worked but the video from DVI connector was all distorted. It looked like a high resolytion LCD monitor connected to a very old low resolution video card. I checked and my radeon 7970 was outputting proper 2560x1440. I had to use HDMI connector to get the correct video quality.
After this I noticed a huge backlight leak all around the bezel. Since otherwise it was working and I am an electronic engineer I decided to fix it. After opening I discovered than not only the connector's panel is bent, but the metal panel's enclosure is crooked and missing many screws. Disassembled down to the smallest part, straightened all metal parts/enclosures and assembled it back. Now it actually can be used.
I could probably sent it back again but they will try to repair it (again) and probably will make it even more damaged.
I guess all I have to say now is buy. I know that this review may be deleted by the newegg's staff, but I am going to copy/paste this text on other rating sites. With pictures this time.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: Looks big enough

Cons: DOA. Red light is on but does not react to button clicks nor to any external input. Smells like something is burning inside.

Other Thoughts: First thing I noticed when opened the box - all stickers were peeling off. Not really something you would expect from a $600 monitor. Then I tried to use it with the computer it was intended for - no signs of life. I tried connecting it through 3 out of 4 available connectors (DVI, VGA and HDMI). Tried to connect to different computers. It is detected by a computer but no matter how I configure windows monitor setup and resolution this monitor remains in the power saving mode (I guess). Although it heats up and produces some burning smell.
Another thing which is really disappointed me is that I have to pay the return shipping. It is like they are punishing me for ordering a broken monitor.
Btw, after I ordered this monitor I found out that a retailer which is not allowed to be mentioned here, sells this model for $50 less. I guess if the replacement will be of the same quality I will have to return it and buy from another place which starts with "wal" and ends with "mart" :) to compensate for the RMA shipping charges.

5 out of 5 eggsDoubleSight DS-279W Monitor

Pros: Good looking, well built, excellent picture, got a perfect panel (no dead pixels nowhere, no burn in, no bright spots, no glare...absolutely BEAUTIFUL), base fit perfectly on my Interex SurgeSlayer combo surge protector/monitor stand base (yes I'm that old), colors are simply gorgeous, response time/input lag is very good in the games that I play (flight sims.....don't know bout 1st person shooters as I don't have any...), IPS panel tech, PIP capable (I don't use that.......yet). Actual buttons instead of touchscreen. There is a lot of good to like in this monitor.

Cons: Stand is good overall but it has a little too much flex...this thing weighs 15 lbs by itself so this is somewhat justified & so didn't knock off anything. No paper instructions provided in the box....again nothing to knock off anything. Connections a little hard to get to (VGA, DVI-D in particular) due to placement behind/close to stand but is no different than the other offerings in the same price range so didn't knock off for this either as there is so much good here to like.

Other Thoughts: 1 word of advice....before you hook this monitor up either d'ld the manual off the site or run the DVD & read the manual to learn the button functionality as they do not always follow the labeling on the monitor bezel. This is a business-class single monitor at heart & so it doesn't have the auto signal search have to make the initial signal setting choice. I fought this monitor for approx. 3 hrs trying to set it up in DVI-D. I ended up running a temp VGA cable & it just happened to light up. I then put the DVD in to load the drivers & then I read the manual....preset for VGA (business std). Hooked the DVI-D cable back up & then hit the RIGHT buttons in the right sequence & voila! Golden ever since. Some might have knocked off for this complexity but I didn't think so. This monitor is a good buy & since I am familiar w/ it I definitely will buy it again in the future. Newegg is my shopping haven.
