Optoma HD20 1920 x 1080 DLP 1080P Home Theater Projector 1700 ANSI Lumens 4000:1

Pros: Amazing picture, even makes 720 and lower res look way better than it did on my last projector that was 720p. It's pretty quiet in normal setting although high altitude setting is annoying (see cons). Quick start up and shut down, Harmony remote compatible, bright enough to use even with some ambient light in the room.

I use it with a 110" screen built on my wall, hooked up to my HTPC via HDMI and a PS3 on HDMI. We watch bluerays on the PS3 and HD content on the PC and honestly the picture is far superior to what the theaters have to offer. I don't even go to the theaters anymore unless it's to catch a good 3D movie, but the new HD33 projector might just make paying a premium at the theaters completely pointless.

I love watching HD movies in the comfort of my own home, sprawled out on the futon with the ability to pause the movie for snack and bathroom breaks. Theaters will soon be a thing of the past for me and my family.

Bought this about two years ago and still works flawlessly, although I am nearing the life of the bulb. Luckily the replacement bulbs are less expensive than other brands/bulbs and are rated for longer life than most. Also, this unit seems to be holding it's value well, so that will help offset the cost of upgrading to the HD33 when I decide to do so.

Cons: I'm right on the border of needing to use the high elevation setting, but the fan noise on that setting is less than tolerable. I don't understand why it seems the fan only has two speed settings instead of having an intelligent variable speed fan that only spins as fast as is needed. Although this seems to be the norm, it is a major oversight considering how simple and effective it would be if they actually used it. I had purchased a different brand projector that was even louder than the HD20 and I ended up returning it in exchange for this one and I'm glad I did. So far no problems using normal setting at 5000ft elevation and over 2500 hours on the bulb in normal (not bright) mode.

Other Thoughts: Now the HD33 is out for around $1500, I will probably try to upgrade to that unit and sell this one when it needs a new bulb. After reading some other reviews I think I'll get the extended warranty. I feel fortunate to be one of the owners who have not had any problems that required repair service.

Pros: Owned for 2.5 years. Outstanding picture. Every person who visits is amazed by the quality and size. Gaming on PC/PS3 is awesome. Split screen in MW etc. actually works since each person gets a 50" screen. It supports 24p (24hz refresh rate for original movie playback via PS3 and other 24p-aware playback devices).

Cons: Sent for repairs after a few months - the entire lamp/focus ring hardware came loose and slides sideways. Returned from RMA with a loose screw in the inside, had to fight to get it out. A year later, the hardware is loose again. I also experienced the dreaded vertical lines issue a few times. It's been working good since though. The fan noise is much worse than an Epson 8350, the model I wish I would have purchased (which can throw/shift the output). My room setup is a wide rectangle - 15' deep by 20' wide. I have a 106" pull-down screen to project on. Sony 7.2 surround system, though the (2) subs aren't needed most of the time (tv, light gaming, etc).

Other Thoughts: The picture is amazing, but having to RMA it immediately worried me. The vertical lines issue occurred a few times and didn't help either. Overall has been a good purchase. I've used for 2.5 years now, with 1,200 or so hours on it. By the time the bulb needs replacing, I might just sell it online, and purchase the Epson 8350 (or whatever their current model will be in the future).

Pros: Great picture.
Turns on fast, shuts down fast.
Fit easily to replace our HD65 (3+ years old) that exploded (bulb and color wheel, overheated, melted, unusable)
Quiet.

Cons: After 1.5 months of use vertical lines appeared every 2 inches or so of projection. In looking at the lines it is a shadow being projected, so a shift of the image. Something is messed up and searching the internet said to send it back.
Received RMA and will send back for repair under warranty. PITA though.

Other Thoughts: Great projector, just wish is worked.

Pros: Bought it when it was a promotion. Really nice picture. Just plug in and everything works. Even a newbie can do it. Read some review saying it is good while it works. It is still working good for me. No complaint right now.

Cons: No Speakers Built-In, expensive to repair.

Other Thoughts: The projector works very well, great picture...until it died :(.
My projector failed after about 2400 hours of use. (My son would fall asleep with it most nights)

We used this as our 110" Theater, having attached an XBOX360 and PS3.

The estimated cost to repair was almost the cost of what I purchased the unit for, and since it's almost due for a bulb change, decided I would just replace it.

Pros: I got this along with a 9 by 16 foot screen and have it set up in my backyard. It plays my Xbox games beautifully.

Cons: It does take a bit of throw distance for you to get the full screen. You can use it indoors, but in smaller rooms you will only get about 110 inch screen.

Other Thoughts: I bought this over a year ago and haven't had any problems with it in that whole time. I spent quite a bit of time trying to find the one that was right for me and I am very happy with this one. If your still on the fence I doubt you could go wrong with this model.

Pros: * Beautiful 1080p display that shows up crisp on even a common white wall
* So bright (in the standard, lowest-power mode) I often forget to turn off the fluorescent light in the next room.
* Powers up and ready to use in less than a minute
*Quiet

Cons: * Long throw distance; At maximum size I managed a generous 100" diagonal display with the projector a full 11 feet away.

Pros: It has a nice picture, easy to use menu. Makes for a nice big HD screen.

Cons: Right after I mounted it to the ceiling, it started intermittently showing vertical white lines all the way across the screen (50 or so). I would press lightly on the bottom (the top because it is upside down) of the case and the lines went away but would come back as soon as I took my hand off.

Other Thoughts: The vertical white lines went away after the 2nd day and usually show up when I initially turn on the projector but seem to go away after a few minutes. Since I have a 1-year warranty, I'll wait to see if this problem goes away before I send it in for service.

Pros: Full 1080p. Two HDMI Inputs. VGA Input. Works extremely well with my Radeon HD4670 installed in my HTPC.

Cons: First one arrived with a faulty fan. The projector would over heat in a matter of minutes and shut down. Looking into the device through the cooling vent, I could see the cooling fan sputtering. Seems to be one of the more pressing issues for this model.

Other Thoughts: This projector was an upgrade from a BenQ MP610. I purchased this because I wanted to upgrade my home theater to Blu-Ray. I have to say, I was nervous about this purchase as I wasn't sure I'd really notice the difference between standard dvds and blu-ray versions. I can now say, I do see the difference between the two. Standard DVDs still look great, but Blu-Rays look significantly better. I'm tempted to purchase Blu-Ray versions of movies I already own because they do look better.

I have to say, I was undecided between this projector and the Epson Powerlite 8350. However, given the added cost of the Epson and the size of that projector, I decided to go with this one. I probably would have been blown away with the Epson, but I'm extremely happy with the Optoma.

Oh. If you're looking to ceiling mount a projector and don't have power up there, I'd recommend googling, "Powerbridge".

Pros: Good picture, relatively quiet, bright, cheap

Cons: Reliability, short warranty. After about 15 months the projector started to have washed out or fuzzy red pixels. It would eventually flicker for a while then all red would disappear. I've sent it in for repair, and to be honest the process seems pretty well laid out and quick, but we'll see how long it lasts once I shell out the cash to get it back.

Other Thoughts: I guess you get what you pay for.
