Does the sound work with hdmi or do I need to plug in the 3.5 jack?

The sound does work with HDMI (assuming your graphics card supports HDMI audio, which most do).  When the HDMI monitor input is selected, the sound from HDMI is sent through the speakers, when any other input is selected, the sound from the 3.5 mm jack is sent through the speakers.

Question 2

Details say VGA cord comes in the box so a VGA connection must exist on the back of the monitor but I dont see VGA listed as a connectivity option . Could you clarify please ?

Yes, It has a VGA connector. There is a picture of the connections if you click on the three dots it reveals a photo gallery with a coonections picture. I have been using this monitor since Sept with great results BTW.

how tall is this monitors viewable screen?

From the desk to the top of the monitor is about 15 1/4" not tilted. That is the highest it would be. The LCD screen it's self is 10 1/2" H by 18 3/4" W obviously 21 1/2" diagonal. Measuring the bezel it's 12" X 20 1/4"

Can I use this with my 14" Lenovo laptop?

Yes providing your laptop has a VGA out port.  Keep in mind that your video driver must support wide screen resolutions to use the monitor in wide screen mode.  Otherwise it will look stretched.

Does screen tilt or swivel?

Yes it tilts. 20degrees of tilt. However the tilt appears to move backwards only. So with the LCD screen completely tilted forward, it will be 90 degrees like an L you can NOT get it to tilt forward beyond 90degrees. Only backward to around 110 degrees.

As for swivel, no the LCD doesn't swivel at the neck of the stand, you would simply have to turn the base.

This LCD is VESA capable though. So you can use a desktop LCD stand with it. Many desktop LCD stands offer swivel and tilt beyond what the stock LCD can offer. I purchased one from a site called Mono Price, for only 20 bucks that works beautifully!

I use it for my PC which has a Radeon graphics card with an HDMI output. My graphics card also has a DVI and a Display Port output which also work using an adapter to convert the connection to HDMI. This is how I was able to set up my dual monitor system using two of these Asus monitors. Using a PC, you would want to make sure the graphics card has a 1920 x 1080 output to take advantage of this monitor's resolution.

You could also plug a DVD player or Xbox or whatever that has an HDMI output into it. The built in speakers however, are not very loud. If you're going to do some serious viewing on this monitor (movies or games), I would suggest a pair of good computer speakers that you can plug into its 1/8" stereo audio output. The HDMI cable should carry the audio from your source device, and this monitor will take the audio and output the signal on that 1/8" (3.5mm) stereo output.

Does it support windows 8.1? It seems like a great monitor but my new pc comes with 8.1 so that would kinda be a deal breaker

Of course it does, it's a monitor. The OS doesn't matter. I've used mine on a Mac, Windows 7 and a PS3. I don't have Windows 8 but there is no reason it wouldn't work.

If your laptop has a video out of some kind (HDMI, VGA, DVI) I'm not sure why it wouldn't.  I would look up more info about your specific laptop and make sure that it does support video output.  Good luck!

Yes it should have 0 issues and, give you what you paid for. I have used this monitor for my gaming graphics card and it's perfect, any HDMI supported video card (which is almost all now a days) should work but note you will need to download the graphics card drivers specific to your graphics card for optimum quality/performance.
