5 out of 5 eggsBarebones Value

Pros: This monitor is as good as it gets without adding any superfluous features. Colors are much more accurate than my old TN panels, and the monitor can get very bright. It's reliably served me for a few years, and has consistently looked great.

Cons: The bezel is around 3/4" wide, and I wouldn't recommend it in multi-monitor setups. Black levels are a little high. Not all modes have all options available for image tweaking.

Other Thoughts: If you're looking for a good-looking exterior and lots of extras, this monitor is not for you. If all you care about is a high-quality panel, this monitor is a fantastic value.

2 out of 5 eggsDon't use Asus RMA if you have a problem

Pros: Good colors and good field of vision.

Solid build and high quality when they work.

Fairly inexpensive IPS monitors.

Cons: So I sent one of these monitors (out of three) to be RMA'd to Asus a couple weeks ago because the power socket was broken and if you wiggled the power cord even the slightest bit the monitor would shut off. The untrained "workers" (NewEgg won't let me use the word I want to use) at Asus did something to it, replaced some random part, I get it back and the exact same problem still exists.

Now it doesn't take a genius to figure out what the problem was. Plug the monitor in and it just happens. They probably did zero troubleshooting (like, you know, plugging the thing in when it says there's a power problem) and just replaced some random part hoping that would fix it. They offered a second RMA with free shipping, but then "forgot" the new shipping label. (Should I mention the initial shipping costs were almost 1/3 the monitor's retail price?)

Asus has the problem that when their stuff works its wonderful, but if it breaks their RMA system is utter garbage.

Other Thoughts: I say "untrained" because I worked for Asus at their Jeffersonville, Indiana facility in 2012 and they will outright fire you if you ask for actual, formal training or documentation. (I was told to fix an $1,800 gaming laptop by going to YouTube.) The people working there make marginally above minimum wage ($9/hr to solder motherboards last time I saw a posting on Careerbuilder), aren't the brightest people in the world (you know, like using YouTube to fix a laptop) and they're almost exclusively contractors with less than zero job security. I quit after one week on the repair floor because unemployment was better than what that place was going to do to my resume.

Oh, and getting broken equipment back from an RMA is standard procedure for Asus. (Sometime the same problem and sometimes something new is broken.) I worked in the call center for them too and lost count of how many calls sounded exactly like my experience.

2 out of 5 eggsGood Display, but with minor annoyances

Pros: The quality of the display itself is very good. A very good display for the money.

Cons: Minor annoyance: I wish the stand had a bit more heft to it. The unit if fairly light and thus is prone to wobble a tiny bit if the table/desk it sits on is bumped at all. -1 egg

Major Annoyance: Once the display goes to sleep, it won't come on again unless I toggle through the inputs or turn the monitor off and on again. As you can imagine, this quite annoying. -2 eggs.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Burke A.,

Thank you for your valuable review on your purchase of the ASUS VS239H-P display monitor. I do apologize for the unstable stand and the sleep mode features. This LCD is actually VESA wall mountable if you wish not to utilize the stand. As for the sleep mode not properly functioning. Please try and adjust the settings in your video card control panel. If that does not help, I would suggest resetting your LCD back to factory settings. If you would like to discuss this matter further, please feel free to email me at cl-jolene@asus.com with reference case number N150520740.

Thank you for choosing ASUS!

4 out of 5 eggsGood

Pros: -Great Colors
-Crisp Image
-decent response time for IPS Panel
-Insert other IPS quality goodness

Cons: -The stand on my second monitor (own 2 of these) seems to be off compared to the first. There is annoying .5 cm difference between the first monitor and the second one. I think the stand for the second one has issues, so it will not screw in completely. I had to take an egg off, as this was suppose to be dual monitor setup.

-No internal speakers. I would have love to trash my old cheap logitech speakers.

Other Thoughts: Besides having to find a 3rd party solution (dual VESA mount), I can definitely said I was happy with my purchase.

4 out of 5 eggsMonitors are great value, BUT NO SOUND THROUGH HDMI!

Pros: - Great value
- IPS panel
- Good size
- Great for dual monitor setup

Cons: - No sound through hdmi
- colours not exactly the same, over two monitors

Other Thoughts: No matter what I do, selecting the device as my default sound device, no audio will play over the monitor I'm using through HDMI.

The sound is "playing" but nothing is coming from the speakers.
I've checked through Nvidia control panel, and it is set to allow audio to pass through.

I've tried a different HDMI cable, I've tested both monitors, and no audio will play through HDMI.

Cons: The stand is wobbly which seems to be always a thing but stays on.

3 out of 5 eggsY U NO WAKE UP SCREEN?!?!?!

Pros: Its a great monitor for a tight budget. I've had this for about 3 months now and have had no problems except one (listed in cons). Beautiful colors, lightweight, responsive, lots of screen area for work and play; perfect for gaming, watching videos and doing video editing work. It's everything I could have asked for, except....

Cons: The monitor refuses to wake up from sleep if connected via HDMI. If connected via DVI the monitor works perfectly. This wouldn't be such a big issue if my graphics card had more than 1 DVI port. But since I run a dual monitor setup, having the HDMI port rendered useless by this slight annoyance is rather frustrating and I am resigned to using the less than ideal VGA port for my second monitor. I've been looking over the internet and cannot find a solution to this problem. If anyone has a solution to this please let me know!

Other Thoughts: I would have rated this monitor 5 eggs had it not been for the HDMI issue. It really seems like something that could be fixed easily. Whether or not this is ASUS's fault is unknown to me, however my almost sublime experience with the product has nonetheless been negatively affected by the HDMI issue. For those that don't care for HDMI at all, BUY THIS MONITOR

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I am sorry to read about the problem you are encountering with your ASUS LCD monitor not waking up from sleep while using HDMI. Have you made sure all of your VGA drivers are updated? Is your LCD's power cord loose? Have you tired using a different HDMI cable to see if you get the same results? If you would like to discuss more about this issue, feel free to email me at cl-jolene@asus.com with case number N150401139. And let me know the results to those possible solutions.

Thank you for being a loyal ASUS customer!

3 out of 5 eggsSome issues

Pros: Looks very nice, functions very well when functioning correctly.

Cons: The monitor does not automatically wake up along with the computer. I bought this as a second monitor for my home desktop. When I wake up my machine, my first monitor wakes up automatically, but I have to press the power button on this one every single time. Not the biggest inconvenience, as I've grown accustomed to doing it, but an inconvenience none the less.

Upon exiting certain fullscreen functions, especially older video games or prompts to provide admin access that tunnel vision your screen and relax after you've granted access, the screen will display these random horizontal red lines accross the screen. They move around and are very distracting. The only way to stop them is to turn the monitor off and back on, or to change the input away from and back to HDMI. This will also happen to a lesser degree intermittently if the monitor is on for a long time.

Other Thoughts: These issues are fairly disappointing for the price of the monitor. I guess I was not in enough of a hurry to do another RMA experience, and I naively hoped these issues would resolve themselves or I'd find solutions to them over time.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Aidan,

I do apologize for the inconveniences this monitor has caused for you this far. If you purchased this monitor brand new, you do have a 3 year ASUS manufactures warranty. If you would like to know more about ASUS's RMA process feel free to email me at cl-jolene@asus.com with your serial number. Please be sure to also include this reference case number N150308958, in the subject line of your email as well.
