4 out of 5 eggsFantastic Monitor

Pros: This was my first true PC gamer enthusiast monitor upgrade. My previous monitors were 27" 1080p, but were not 120hz. That being said, if you're debating on upgrading to a 120hz monitor from a 60hz, I can not recommend it enough. You WILL see a very HUGE difference in gameplay. It WILL give you an edge. Do not doubt this, it is real.

Here's what I've learned about this specific monitor.

- The physical adjustment options for this monitor will do as they say (obviously) and you can adjust it exactly to a comfortable setup (unless you have a unique setup of course). This is good. This should be a standard with any monitor, and it shouldn't have to be praised. But considering there are numerous monitors available that do NOT have these options, I feel obligated to mention that this one will meet your standards (save for being able to turn it 90 degrees on its side - which if you need that from a 120hz monitor, I'm very curious about your setup and need for such a thing?)

-Video! - You're all wondering if this really does what it says it does. Why else review the reviews? Yes, it does (with some adjusting ... see Cons).

Cons: The negatives that I'm about to go over for this monitor seem to happen with every 120hz monitor (according to what I've read on their reviews). This review, like many others, will repeat this to you. So... read on and be aware.

Having a 120hz+ monitor requires some setting up to get it to do what you're really wanting it to do. Display at 120hz - sounds easy, yes? Just flip the settings over to 120hz and done!

...

Sadly... that is not the case. Now please note, this was my first attempt to use a 120hz+ monitor. So if it's simpler than what I'm about to explain, I'd love to hear it.

When setting up this monitor to push the 120hz (yes, I know it can do 144hz - but for simplicity sake and to help avoid potential issues with compatibility, I opted for the 120hz). That being said... you're going to wind up doing a bit of research on getting it to work. It took me well over an hour to set it up to where I was comfortable with it.

Again, I will emphasize that I believe all 120hz monitors that support Nvidia 3D and strobing will need this kind of attention during initial setup.

I'm using a program that tricks the monitor into a false 3D state. This was necessary to enable the strobing effect, which you will very much want - as the strobing can't be enabled (by default) unless the monitor believes it's in a 3D state.

To give you a headstart, it's called "Strobelight Beta 4 by ToastX". At least, that's what I'm currently using - there may be other options.

Once that's installed and running, you have to adjust the colors - it will change them. And that part can be quite time consuming. I had found (and unfotunately lost) a website that helps with tuning colors. I'm sure with some minimual effort, you will find it as well.

All of that, to get it ready to play your basic game at 120hz/120fps. Now keep in mind that this program will emulate a 3D state, giving you access to the strobe feature on the monitor. If you plan on using the 3D glasses, you'll need to disable this, and setting those up can be just as tricky - from what I've read anyway.

All in all - I'm take off an egg for not having the strobe option available without a 3D state - causing me to go through all of that reading and adjusting just to get what I was hoping for out of the box.

Other Thoughts: I'd like to link all of you who decided to purchased this fine piece of hardware to the sites that you undoubtably have to locate to set this monitor up for its proper use... BUT... the rules being what they are for reviews, I'm not permitted to. I appologize. You'll have to wing this one without me.

4 out of 5 eggsVery good gaming monitor

Pros: If you can push all 144Hz to it at 1080P you are in for a treat. It has very little input lag.

Cons: Lets just get this out of the way, it a TN panel. if you don't look at it straight on you get very noticeable color distortion. I would have liked to see a Display Port connector and that's honestly why i gave it only 4 eggs. I knew it didn't have one when i bought is, but I just don't see why they didn't put a vga port on and not a display port.

Other Thoughts: This is a gaming monitor and its very good at it. If you work with photos and or need accurate color reproduction there are far better options for that.

I would definitely recommend it to a friend.

3 out of 5 eggsKnow this about ASUS's warranty REVISED

Pros: I bought a VG278H, which is has the same specs as the VG278HE only it has a built-in 3D emitter and 3D glasses. It is no longer made by ASUS.

Overall, I like the monitor. It has good color and renders 3D very well. I mainly purchased it for the 120 Hz refresh rate and that certainly makes gaming smoother if you have the graphics card horsepower to drive the monitor up to that rate. 27 inch screen is great for gaming!

Cons: One sub-pixel is stuck on red but not really noticeable unless you have an all-white background. Backlight bleed along the top and bottom edge of the monitor is definitely noticeable on a very dark screen. One egg off for that.

Other Thoughts: Back on April 21st, I posted about my warranty experience with ASUS. It turns out that the problem was caused by my graphics card's DVI-D output TDMS transmitter being faulty and not a problem with the monitor.

That being said, what happened with my warranty experience still stands to some extent. Celeste from ASUS Customer Loyalty was certainly helpful in trying to resolve my warranty claim, since the tech support people I originally talked to at ASUS never bothered to call me back after two months. Fortunately, I was finally able to determine that my graphics card was at fault and didn't have to RMA my monitor for repair.

Do know this though. If you purchase an ASUS monitor like I did that is soon discontinued afterwards, be advised. If you have a warranty claim and want to cross-ship a RMA replacement monitor so you don't have to go 2+ weeks without a monitor, there's a good chance ASUS will not have one to do so because they probably will be out of them. You will then have to send your monitor in for repair.

ASUS did offer this monitor (VG278HE) as a substitute for cross-shipping but since it has no 3D emitter, I would have to buy a Nvidia 3D sensor kit ($150) to have the same capabilities as the VG278H. ASUS will not make up the difference and that was unacceptable to me.

ASUS will also not provide a temporary substitute monitor while your monitor is being repaired if they can not find another monitor to cross-ship to you. I normally wouldn't expect this but I asked about the possibility since ASUS could not find a replacement monitor for me for over two months.

One egg off for the experience but thank you to Celeste.

5 out of 5 eggsLiquid Smooth Awesomeness

Pros: 144Hz makes your games look as slick as they can be. I bought a 1440p korean monitor that I was ultimately disappointed with and ordered this monitor instead and let me tell you I'm always impressed with ASUS products. I've owned 4 other monitors from ASUS in the past and once again they deliver.

Cons: HDMI won't do 144hz but I'm not too torn up about having to use DVI.

*AMD users with CROSSFIRE* You have to use BOTH Crossfire bridges in order for them to 144hz not knocking an egg off for this because that's not a fault of this product!

Other Thoughts: Get this monitor!

1080p Never looked better. Did I mention 144hz is freaking awesome?

1 out of 5 eggsKnow this about ASUS's warranty!!!

Pros: I purchased a VG278H in Sept., 2013 and while it isn't a VG278HE, you should be aware of ASUS's bogus claim about rapid RMA replacement and "worry free" products.

In Feb., 2014, my VG278H started to go black for two seconds and then come back on again at random times during use. No problem, I thought, I'll contact ASUS and get a replacement, having them cross-ship another monitor to me so I wouldn't be stuck without one for at least two weeks if I were to decide to have this faulty one repaired.

Contacted ASUS by email on 2/22/14 and received a case number. I subsequently called them to get the replacement set up and was told that they didn't have a replacement monitor available and they had no idea how long it would be before they would have one.

I was then offered a VG278HE as a replacement but it does not have a built-in 3D emitter like the VG278H and I would have to spend an additional $150 to buy a NVidia 3D sensor kit to make it equivalent to the VG278H. ASUS said they would not pay for that.

I turned down that substandard offer and was then told that they would keep looking for a replacement monitor for me. It's been two months now and I haven't heard a word from ASUS. The repair of my VG278H is still an option but I was told it would take at least two weeks to repair it and going without a monitor for that long is unacceptable.

So ASUS, if your customer loyalty people are cruising this thread and read this (Case # NA3461340), know that you have one very upset customer who has purchased many other ASUS products in the past but will no longer do so in the future if you don't back up your warranty claims like you advertise.

Cons: Inadequate warranty service

2 out of 5 eggsVGA cable...

Pros: Its big

Cons: VGA CABLE!

Other Thoughts: For the price payed for this monitor, packaging it with only a vga cable is absolutely absurd. Its the first monitor I've bought in quite a while, and I didn't even think people used vga cables any more... The 3d doesn't work as I'm stuck on 60hz for some reason. I'm nocking 3 eggs off because its stupidly inconvenient and it shouldn't be for the cost.

The DPI is a little low, kind of expected with 27" at only 1080p. I'm not used to it since I've been programing on a smaller monitor with a higher resolution.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear SavagteTwinky,

We are sorry to hear your experience. The monitor should also include a DVI cable. If you’d like to discuss your customer support experience with me, please email me at cl-celeste@asus.com and in and include case#3651250 in the subject line.
