5 out of 5 eggsGreat Monitor

Pros: Great image in a diverse range of content.

I love that there is a preset setting selection button. The settings are: Standard, Theater, Game, Night View, sRGB, and Scenery.

The 3d is decent. Best part is its automatic. On everything. Seriously.

I LOVE that there are speakers built in. They aren't the best quality but I love that I have the option of using them. It makes this monitor more portable.

The base swivels infinitely and the tilt positions are pretty good too.

Cons: Wish there was one more HDMI.

"3D" causes headaches after awhile. I barely use it anymore after the novelty wore off.

The speakers aren't really that great so don't plan on them being your main sound source if you want decent reproduction of anything other than tones.

Other Thoughts: I love this monitor. It has everything, it does everything, and it does it well. I've used the 3d on a lot of games. I've tried new games like Skyrim and Assassins Creed 3, and old games like Duke Nukem 3d. This screen generally works very well with most games most of the time. I've used it with Xbox360 through HDMI and PC through HDMI and DVI.

The big concern with the 3d is that you have to be directly in front of the screen for it to work so it is really only good for single person use unless you like looking over the shoulder.

2 out of 5 eggsNice colors; ugly pixel grid

Pros: The monitor has warm, vibrant colors and did not even need any calibration out of the box, plus the viewing angle is great.

Cons: The biggest problem is a clearly visible black grid between pixels. It's especially bad when displaying light areas of low contrast, which appear full of ugly horizontal stripes. I've never seen this problem on other monitors, but I don't think this is an isolated defect, since I have two VG27AH monitors and it appears on both. The effect stops being noticeable when I am about five feet away, but any closer and it's very apparent.

A secondary issue is the glossy finish, which is extremely reflective and if your environment is lit at all, dark areas of the screen will catch plenty of reflections.

Other Thoughts: I have two of these VG278AH monitors around a VG278H. The colors and view angle are marginally better on the AHs, but the lack of pixel grid and the matte screen makes the H a much better choice overall.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Max,

The VG278AH has a different technology compared to VG278H so you may notice a feature on VG278AH that is not present in VG278H. But both should deliver great images as long as you look at the screen at OSHA’s recommended distance (the preferred viewing distance should be between 20 to 40 inches) https://www.osha.gov/SLTC/etools/computerworkstations/components_monitors.html.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome

Pros: I call myself an average gamer and computer techie. but as far as I'm concerned this monitor is sick. the 3d conversion is ok but I use tridef 3d with an amd 7950 and the visuals are awesome. the 3D looks great. some other reviewer said that text wasn't as sharp as they had hoped, but I honestly cant see what they were talking about. the monitor is beautiful. I upgraded to this monitor from a high end Samsung model and this monitor blew it away. the colors are great.

Cons: None that I can think of.

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent monitor, just needs official 3D Vision support

Pros: Image is clear and bright, with no dead or stuck pixels.
Thanks to the IPS panel, image looks great and colors are accurate even at extreme viewing angles.
3D effect looks beautiful once you get it working properly.
Great response time for gaming, with no ghosting so long as you make sure to set Trace Free to 0 in the OSD menu.

Cons: No official 3D Vision support.
Noticeable light bleed on very dark backgrounds, especially in the lower-left corner, but acceptable given how great everything else looks.

Other Thoughts: Other reviews mentioned blurry text, which I only see if I put the included glasses on while 3D mode is inactive. Under normal circumstances, text is crisp and clear, especially compared to my old monitor.

In order to get proper 3D in games, I had to spoof the EDID of one of the 3D Vision-Ready monitors that are available. Looks great in games that play nice with 3D Vision, but only if I put the included glasses on upside-down. Apparently, the polarization interleave pattern is reversed from the 3D-Vision Ready passive 3D monitors that are out there. If/when ASUS or Nvidia add proper 3D Vision support, I'll change the review to 5 stars.

2 out of 5 eggsStuck Pixel and Blurry 3D/Text

Pros: Its a LED IPS 1080P monitor. The colors look very good.

Cons: The monitor came with a green stuck pixel. So I have to return to it and go through the RMA process. The 3D is blurry and when active the two images dont even come together properly so it looks like two offset images not coming together very well resulting in blurry 3D. The monitor can also make text look blurry as well. I am returning this which is a hassle and opting to go with the non 3d model. The non 3d model should be a little bit cheap in my opinion because it has one less needed feature.

Other Thoughts: Hopefully the non 3d model of this monitor is better and has no green stuck pixels when it arrives and that reading text is easier on the eyes as well. If you are considering buying this monitor I would pass. The 3D is not worth it and it just seems like a selling feature that is half baked and not implemented very well. I wish it had a 1ms response time like the non IPS LED ASUS as well.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Kaos,

I’m so sorry to hear that you did not have a very good experience with this model. Glad to hear you were able to correct it. Should you give us another chance with a different model, please email me at cl-celeste@asus.com and include ref#1072-9052 in the subject line.

3 out of 5 eggsIPS GOOD, 3D BAD

Pros: Showed up undamaged and on time as they usually do from Newegg. The monitor has a nice sleek look to it. A very nice
adjustable, heavy weight stand with little wobble.
Colors are great via the IPS panel :).. But, unfortunately, it has some very disappointing outcomes with getting to the 3D and refresh rates in games and movies.. (see cons and other thoughts)

Pros:
-Nice Contrast & Brightness
-Very Little Back Light Bleed Through
-IPS Makes for True, Rich Colors
-Well Packages
-Nice Heavy Adjustable Stand
-Clean Looking & Stylish

Cons: I bought this for the Passive 3D. I am running an AMD HD 6950 GPU and cannot take advantage of Active 3D Vision glasses from NVIDIA. I figured making a small sacrifice going from my ASUS VE278Q with 2ms refresh to this with a slightly higher 5ms refresh, would be a good trade off because of the 3D feature... Well I was wrong. The 3D is easy to use via a quick touch of a button but that's about the only good thing about it. It has one adjustment in the Menu, "3D Depth". Its a slider in increments of 10 and is default at 50. The higher the #, the deeper the 3D depth.. At 50, it is so darn blurry you can't even tell if anything is really in 3D or not. I have 20/20 vision btw. You have to go all the way down to about 20 to get rid of most of the shadowing and make it clear enough to make watching a movie or playing games enjoyable. With the Depth set to 20, you loose almost all of the 3D effect. I kept switching back and forth between 2D & 3D with the depth set at 20 and could barely tell the difference. Basically in 3D the screen looks sunken into from the bezel with no "pop out" effect at all.. Its very disappointing to say the least. I feel that its more of a gimmick or a sales pitch because it clearly doesn't work very well and will make a lot of people, like myself, leaving much to be desired.

Cons:
-3D is pretty lame. Don't expect anything amazing here.
-5ms Refresh is quite noticeable, more so than expected.

Other Thoughts: I did my research and took a chance because I wanted to try out an IPS Panel and 3D so you win some, you loose some. If you are a Gamer or watch a lot of movies like me, PLEASE,.. do yourself a huge favor and DO NOT buy this monitor!!

I have owned 3 different ASUS LED Monitors and they are very well made and usually meet all of my expectations. I feel this model was rushed onto the scene to compete with the 3D craze and not well refined at all. For the first time in my long stand with ASUS I am actually saying that I am truly unhappy with this product.

If you don't game and don't care about 3D or high refresh rates but want to get into an IPS Monitor, this may be a good choice for you given IPS Monitors can be very expensive. For Games, avid Movie watchers... STAY AWAY,, You can thank me later :)

3 out of 5 eggsNot as good as I hoped.

Pros: Big, and BRIGHT! The stand is quite good. As a matter of fact, it is practically as good as a Neo-Flex VESA stand I purchased seperately for another monitor. It tilts, swivels, and pans very well.

The passive 3D works great for movies. I am not particular about the 3D, so I cannot say its the best or the worse, but it is good enough for me. I personally prefer the light polarized 3D glasses to active shutter glasses. What works in the iMax works great for me at home.

Cons: Low refresh rate of 60Hz. For use in an office setting, the text is disappointing. It is not as sharp and crisp as I am use to, so this was a real bummer. If you are a writer or spend a lot of time reading, you may want to consider something with a better display. The 3D is nice, but that isn't enough to blind me to poor 2D text performance, which for me is far more important.

Other Thoughts: This is a budget entry into the 27" IPS 3D world. Is you want a huge, affordable, 3D monitor then this is a great choice. However, if you need sharp, crisp text then you may want to look elsewhere, save $100, and buy a much better 2D monitor.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Doomer,

I’m so sorry if you’re not fully satisfied with this monitor. Please try using the Windows 7 “Adjust ClearType text” wizard: Control Panel->All Control Panel Items ->Display ->Adjust ClearType text. This should calibrate how the texts are displayed on your monitor. If you’d like to further discuss this issue with me, please contact me at cl-celeste@asus.com and include ref#1072-6405 in the subject line. I’d be glad to help you out.

Sincerely,
Celeste

4 out of 5 eggsVG27AH Good and Bad

Pros: Great Color! DVI connection is best with 2d/3d conversion. 2d/3d button replaces the need to buy tridef software. Skyrim, assasains creed etc look great. I am a fan of passive over active, this does well for games.

Cons: The HDMI 1.4 video is ok. it gets the effect, but I get grey bars on both sides of the screen. Couldn't get 2d display to fill screen with hdmi. So I use DVI for gaming/3d/2d and HDMI for 3d movies via an external blue ray. This sucks and is the reason for 4 out of 5 stars.

Other Thoughts: 3d is cool, but so far, not worth the 100.00 over a standard 27" ips. I'd return it, but don't want to pay restocking fee. great 2d monitor.. 3d should be better than it is.
