1 out of 5 eggsAsus PA249Q

Pros: - beautiful picture
- excellent color calibration

Cons: - extremely high pitched noise (can be easily Quantifiable by a noise-measuring dB device)
- Asus splash logo displays when powered on and there is no way to disable it.
- however, despite these serious problems, the Merits of the display far outweighs the Cons

Other Thoughts: I've purchased several of these monitors, mainly for work; there is a high-pitched noise for certain at least for the ones I've worked with. I work as a technical designer in the circuit / components industry in Silicon Valley. I've done a lot of research on the issue, and it has led me to believe that the main problem with the display that users are experiencing is because of a faulty transformer; something's wrong with the power due to a bad batch of displays Manufactured from a factory in China. Asus decided to cover the issue up because despite being award-winning they are not a best-selling model and corporate decided to Shelve the issue, and discontinue the PA line in terms of Margins, thus saving tens of thousands of dollars in terms of RMA.

there's nothing wrong with the display. the issue is how Asus has handled the customer service that is unacceptable. it is a shame that Asus created such an excellent monitor but provided Zero service.

if you already own the Asus PA249Q, without calibration, I recommend setting the brightness down to 5 or 6 / 100, and a low contrast level 30 or 40 / 100. 40 will provide excellent color. Gamma @ 2.2. Make sure to disable the sound and whatever features that are present, and do not use the USB.

this won't have any effect on the Monitor itself, but if you wanted to, you can buy a 90 degree power adapter, and a Medical-grade power cable. you can also purchase an AQ Cinnamon HDMI cable for about $100 - 200.

hope it helps,

5 out of 5 eggsBeautiful Display

Pros: No dead or stuck pixels
Beautifully vibrant, saturated, and even colors
Lots more screen area than my previous 20 in. monitor
Text is very crisp
No backlight bleeding
Very well built, sturdy, and stable construction

Cons: Way too bright out of the box, but can be adjusted down.
No complaints whatsoever.

Other Thoughts: I have owned this monitor for almost 2 years. This is a very high quality monitor. I didn't have the high pitch sound like others have.

I suffered for a few months before I decided to dial down the brightness control to less bright. I turned it the whole way down to 0 and the contrast the whole way up to 100. Now its a pleasure to read text and watch movies for hours with little eyestrain/fatigue. I highly recommend this monitor

5 out of 5 eggsDear Colorists,

Pros: High Quality Panel
Matte Finish
Number of Inputs
Great Color Accuracy

Cons: Very very subtle high pitch sound. Don't let this be the decision maker.

Other Thoughts: TLDR;
Out of the box, this display gives you accurate sRGB & Adobe RGB 8 Bit Color (DVI & VGA). If you want these accurate color spaces in 10 Bit (HDMI & DisplayPort) you must calibrate them yourself in the User Mode 1 & 2 profiles of the display.

I bought this display mainly for the 10 bit color depth. As a an indie colorist, I wanted to make an affordable grading setup before I start investing in the expensive displays such as the Dreamcolor. I'm running this display through a Blackmagicdesign Intensity Shuttle USB 3.0 on PC (Because OSX doesn't support 10 bit yet.)

If your video work is mostly for the web, this is more than ideal for the price range. This also means you want to work mainly in the sRGB Color Space. This display comes factory calibrated in the sRGB and Adobe RGB Color Spaces. Pretty cool right?

Well it seems that these color spaces are only available through the Analog inputs (VGA & DVI). I'm not sure about VGA, but DVI only supports up to 8 bit color depth. Your only option are HDMI and DisplayPort which are digital. My work around was to recalibrate the User Mode 1 and User Mode 2 display profiles as sRGB and Adobe RGB (found by pressing Menu on the display and then choosing Splendid) using an X-Rite i1Display Pro or Spyder4 Calibrator. If your work goes on TV, you can replace Adobe RGB by Rec.709)

1 out of 5 eggsPity

Pros: Beautiful Picture
Sturdy stand
Menu Joystick

Cons: High pitched noise!

Other Thoughts: Purchased this monitor looking to upgrade my current 16:9 to a 16:10 for some extra screen real estate. Also wanted a wide color gamut for photographic work (hobby). Read many online reviews and narrowed it down to this and the Dell U2413. Decided on the asus and ordered it from another major online retailer as they had a better price. Awaited the brown truck. I Was very impressed before I even plugged it in. Well packaged and protected. Impressed when taking the monitor out of the box to set it up. Well made and heavy duty plastic. Sturdy stand. Quality product all around...until I plugged the unit in. Now I knew what so many of the reviews complained about. The high pitched buzz coming from the monitor. I felt as if it would burn through my brain, it was that annoying. Plugged stuff into the USB worse! The buzz now was oscillating! I tried every conceivable fix. Different power cord, monitor cables, usb cables, outlets, etc. No change in the buzz. How could it be that the reviewers who raved about the monitor didn't hear it? Its so loud and irritating. Maybe just a bad batch. I decided to order another from Newegg even though the price was higher. Awaited the brown truck. No, can't be!? The same exact noise. Same increase in noise when plugging into the usb hub. Back to Newegg and the other retailer. Two different manufacture dates (both 2014) but the problem has obviously not been fixed by Asus. Shame too. The monitor otherwise is excellent and would be a winner. The picture and colors are stunning. The menu joystick is brilliant. The stand is incredibly solid. If only they could fix the power supply problem. My search continues and I'm on to trying the Dell, but I have never been a big fan of their products. It uses the same panel so hopefully the picture will be as good, but I doubt it will be as solid. I guess I can live with that if it doesn't have the annoying buzzing.

2 out of 5 eggssquealing noise renders monitor unuseable

Pros: High quality display.

Cons: High pitched squealing noise emanates from the back of the monitor. It is loud enough to render the monitor essentially unusable.

Other Thoughts: I purchased one of these monitors. The high pitched squealing noise I described in the "Cons" section made it impossible to use because I work in a quiet environment. I returned the monitor and was given a replacement. The replacement monitor also emits the awful squealing noise. I consider the money I paid for this to be wasted. Do not buy this monitor unless it will be used somewhere with a very high level of ambient noise. A Laundromat, maybe.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Michael,

Have you tried plugging the units to different outlets? Did you check the power cord to see if it’s in good condition? Have you tried using a different computer? If you’d like to discuss this topic with me please contact me at and include case#3580291 in the subject line. Also, please provide me your unit's serial#. 5 out of 5 eggsGlad I stumbled across this "open box"!

Pros: Bright colors and excellent contrast. I like the way you can fine tune this monitor (color adjustment, etc.) and the various measurement overlays one can use for photo work, and so on. I have the monitor set to "AdobeRGB" and the colors are very lifelike. Not super vivid but not bland either.

Cons: None as of now.

Other Thoughts: Bought this to replace an aging Viewsonic 19" widescreen monitor I bought back in Dec 2005. I wanted a display that would put out accurate colors. And I'm not disapointed at all. Some may not like the UI system. It doesn't bother me. My monitor was an "open box" but all of the stuff was included and it works just fine. I saved a good chunk of change by buying "open box".

1 out of 5 eggsPromising monitor, not so great experience

Pros: Antiglare, initial purchase price, 10 bit support (not "real " 10 bit, but nevertheless, supported), screen proportions.
Before my ASUS RT56U expensive modem was hacked due to firmware and my precious ASUS PA246 suddenly stopped working in the same week, I would have said brand.
Colors are fairly good, but you definitely need to calibrate the monitor in "user" mode - forget the color temperature settings.
For stringent color match I use another monitor that was double the price, but for a reason apparently
Newegg is a great parallel source that complements the brick and mortar stores. And they are fast, offer a good choice.

Cons: OSD is very unintuitive and the buttons are not ergonomically for fast selection in semobscurity (these monitors are to be used in low light conditions, radiology PACS workstations, photo - print situations, the buttons should be big and clear to use and have a great tactile feeling )
Company does not stand by their product

Other Thoughts: Too good to be true again? We'll see.
I hope this one is better built. The previous PA monitor I have
Stopped having an image on the screen after 2 1/2 years.
It is a nightmare to figure out how to get the warranty working.
I am unable to get to speak or a reply from somebody at Asus.
regarding the service case number Service (Case) Number NA3456217
I use a 3 monitor setup for image analysis and I need the 10 bit, hence the need for this type of monitor.
The one folowing the PA246, the 248 was just a 8 bit monitor (actually PA 246 is a 8 bit monitor "extended" with a trick to use 10 bit signals. It shows in the lack of grayscale uniformity, but at under 600$ it was a compromise I accepted. I expected some quality and the company to stand by their products though.
. I am using the ATI FirePro 8900 with a Display port cable.
Initially I thought that the Display port cable is the problem and I switched the cables with the other monitors and also used a spare one to test if the cable was the culprit.
Apparently it's not the cable.
There is no information on the screen when I turn of and turn on the screen or if I press the input selector button. (The OSD information does not appear anymore)
My assumption is that the CCFL (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp) electronics are to blame.
The monitor is in a temperature and low humidity controlled environment. The working time on it every day was between 0 and 3 hours.

On a separate note, the ASUS RT56U modem I have was hacked due to the firmware vulnerability. I had to install a open source firmware. A lot of time wasted.
The same with the monitor. We pay premium prices and the warranty does not work and we have actually subpar firmware implementations and convoluted opaque warranties that actually are designed to not function.

5 out of 5 eggsVery solid monitor

Pros: -Very nice rich colors
-Pre-calibrated (works perfectly in my environment)
-Easy to adjust the position
-many connection possible ( display port, hdmi, dvi-D, and vga)
-usb3 hub

Cons: not a con but though it would be thinner

Other Thoughts: got it on sale around 350, preferred this model over the 1080 p which was 100$ less, but those extra pixels really helps for maya

3 out of 5 eggsHigh Pitch Sound

Pros: Picture is clear and color accuracy seems ok. Text is clear.

Cons: High pitched sound, especially loud when something is plugged into 3.0 USB on side of monitor.

Other Thoughts: There is a noise when the monitor is turned on. Not too bad. But when I plug any 2.0 or 3.0 device into the USB 3.0 ports on the side of the monitor there is a high pitched sound. The sound disappears when I unplug the device.

This is in unsat. You can read other reviews that note a similiar high pitch sound. Obviously something is wrong with quality control.
