4 out of 5 eggsVery good monitor for the price!

Pros: Sharpness (0.248mm pixel pitch), thin, light, and compact body design, 2 HDMI ports, excellent price tag, very clear picture with wide viewing angle (both horizontal and vertical)

Cons: Default settings cannot be trusted (for writing and reading intensive work), cannot change the height or swing the monitor, very touchy sensor for the menu

Other Thoughts: When I read other reviews, I just did not understand why people are listing their favorite setting for this monitor. I thought that was for gamers, but for this monitor, you may need to change some of the settings to be able to read and write comfortably. I read and write quite a bit for my work, and I purchased this monitor so that I can do some of work at home.

After changing so many settings, here are the two most important settings for me.

1) Set Vivid pixel to 0. This turns off excessive sharpening that makes small and gray font almost illegible.

2) Turn off Eco mode. This turns off strange color correction that this monitor does and make color and shade more close to what you expect. Also, the aforementioned color collection is the cause of flickering (or automatic change in blightness or shade while I am reading web pages with some shade of color (say,!) for me.

Before I found out about these two settings, I was ready to return the monitor, but now I am very happy with it.

5 out of 5 eggsLove it

Pros: Picture is amazing great for gaming love the the Gamers Plus mode it comes with I would recommend this all day

Cons: I have only one problem with this monitor, Witch is due the (21.5) extra half inch The icons on your desktop will not snap to the one edge of the monitor it will be about a half an inch from the edge, me having OCD it is a pain But if you can over look that This monitor is a great Choice

Other Thoughts: Love This monitor

3 out of 5 eggsGet exactly what you pay for.

Pros: Sleek design looks nice on my desk. Bright, vivid picture is easy on the eyes.

Cons: The OSD is truly a pain. The panel grid shows through the screen. Text is not quite as crisp as I hoped it would be.

Other Thoughts: I'm glad I went with this size instead of any of the larger sizes. I'm in grad school and bought this for reading research articles and to type and create documents on. I wish the text were a little sharper. This monitor is not much better than my other 17" LCD monitor that is 8 years old (I paid about $100 for it at the time). This monitor is certainly brighter, but the colors are not significantly better and the text resolution is definitely not better.

Overall, I'm content with this monitor. The screen real estate is nice, but I really wish I could have spent even $50 more. I feel like I could have gotten a significant step up at that price level. At the same time, I feel like I could have spent $50 less and gotten about the same quality as this monitor, but I trust Asus and try to buy their products when I can.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear DMH,

I am happy to hear that you are overall satisfied with your purchase of an ASUS VX229H Display Monitor. In regards to your concern with the text not being as sharp as needed, have you checked your screen resolution and set it at the maximum native resolution? If you have any questions or inquiries, feel free to email me at with your reference case number N140953342.

Thank you for being a Loyal ASUS Customer!

Best regards,

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic Monitor

Pros: It's very aesthetically pleasing, brilliant color contrast, premium look, feel and build quality, very easy to setup, includes a DVI to HDMI cable, and of course ASUS branding. Absolutely fantastic monitor.

Cons: None.

3 out of 5 eggsGood monitor for non gamers

Pros: I purchased two of these monitors at the same time.

• The stand is sturdy and monitor is relatively slim
• Monitor is light enough to be easily moved around
• Color is quite nice offering a decent range of settings
• Anti glare layer works very well

Cons: • No VESA mount
• One of the two monitors has tearing when gaming or watching videos
• The bezel is larger than what is pictured

Other Thoughts: I paid $150 each and at that price it's a decent monitor. One of them has tearing which is frustrating. I bet there are better monitors out there with a smaller bezel for the price. I'll probably go with a different brand for my next monitor purchase.

4 out of 5 eggsJust for gaming

Pros: I think some of the pros of this monitor is that its very very light. Another is how it looks modern. Then the display looks amazing in BF4. it really takes advantage of the great resolution of this monitor

Cons: I do have one con, is that the power buttons and all of that stuff are touch sensitive. If there was a remote included this feature would be fine for me.

5 out of 5 eggsWOW! I love this monitor.

Pros: Brightness, colors, clarity, detail. This monitor is higher res than my old one and I am ready to throw my 2nd monitor away and get another one of these.

Cons: Doesn't have a height adjustment. I want the monitor to be more eye level. So I will have to buy some monitor stands.

Other Thoughts: This monitor blows away my 2nd monitor. I wish I had bought one of these sooner.

1 out of 5 eggsDied after 3 months

Pros: It is a decent, small IPS 1080p monitor with a decent brightness and contrast.

Cons: Title says it all - it was a decent monitor, but the image started flickering after about 3 months of use.

Hasn't stopped flickering since - all it does is flicker the image.

Other Thoughts: I wouldn't get this monitor again - haven't had great luck with many asus products.

5 out of 5 eggsJust wanted to correct myself

Pros: See other thoughts

Cons: Other thoughts

Other Thoughts: Correct something in my previous review. The description does in fact say it comes with 2x HDMI cables, I was only looking at the product photo which clearly didn't show any, so there's that. Sorry to the guy I doubted, you were right, the description has an error, there aren't any HDMI cables included, only VGA and HDMI to DVI (as well as power and audio).

5 out of 5 eggsGreat monitor, but some color issues

Pros: Great viewing angles, very sleek, bezels aren't very large, came with all cables advertized (see other thoughts), 2 HDMI ports. It's an IPS display, colors looks great (if you mess with settings, see other thoughts). I DEFINITELY recommend this monitor, it looks good with some tweaks.

Cons: Lacks anything other than HDMI and VGA. I would have liked to see DVI or even Display Port, just for more options. The speakers are okay, maybe if you want to skype with someone they'll work fine, but they aren't amazing for games, music, or movies really. They are usable, just not amazing. Works for occasional YouTube vid, but just use headphones.

There IS an issue with colors, at least for me. They look really off, and the presets look bad, my fix that works for me is in other thoughts.

Other Thoughts: To the guy who is disappointed that it didn't come with two HDMI cables: read the description again, it doesn't. It comes with a VGA and an HDMI to DVI cable (which, if your using this for you computer, you should be able to use most likely).

ALSO, about the color problem. Asus has some presets in the monitors on-screen display, and none of them look good without a lot of tweaking. On some, the blacks aren't deep enough, in others contrast is too high etc, and you cant change any of these in the options on some presets.

I use this for games, and out of the box everything looked washed out on the "game" preset to me and other presets were equally funky. So if you want to know my settings, (requires Nvidia GPU) here they are:

In the on-screen display menu:

-Standard mode (in "Splendid" tab, this is important)
-Brightness: 100
-Contrast: 80
-Saturation: 50 (unchangeable)
-Color temp: Normal
-Skin tone: Natural (unchangeable)
-Leave other unchangeable stuff
-Vivid pixel: 0 (annoying sharpening, some people like it)

Now in Nvidia control panel:
(under Display and then Adjust Desktop Color Settings)

-Tick "use Nvidia settings"
-Brightness: 55%
-Contrast: 60%
-Gamma: 0.90
-Digital Vibrance: 72% (because you can't adjust saturation in Standard mode on the monitor, which is washed out)
-Hue: 0 (don't mess with this)
-Digital color format: RGB (see below for more info, important!)
-Content type reported: Desktop program (I just leave it on this)

OK, so Nvidia cards have a problem with RGB, so you need to download a fix or it wont work right and blacks will look bad. Google "nvidia rgb fix" and it will be the first link, or go here to DL:
Use the tool, restart your PC, and it should have full range (0-255) RGB now.

These are the settings I use, and I like them for gaming. Colors look way better than before, especially in Skyrim. Fell free to tweak it to your liking of course, tastes are different, it's just I've found that to work best.

Thanks for reading, I hope I helped someone out.
