5 out of 5 eggsFlabergasted

Pros: I am flabbergasted at the level of clarity and detail. I don't even see the screen, I just see a clear sharp picture. I was disappointed when I first hooked it up, but I knew I had to get things setup correctly. Change the input to DP 1.2 (which was a bit tricky - it's buried in sub menus and not directly off the Display Port menu as one would think). My roommate thought I was crazy spending this money on this monitor. When she saw a 4k movie from Youtube, "Oh yea, okay, it was worth it.".

Cons: I am ruined for anything less than 4k gaming. The recommended settings from Tom's Hardware review online were perfect for me with the exception of the green - kept that at 100. Calibrate to your taste and you won't be disappointed.

Other Thoughts: I have an i7 3.6ghz, GTX760. When I fired up World of Warcraft I was STUNNED. Games look FANTASTIC on this ting. Anti Aliasing was turned off (I don't notice a difference w/ it on so no need to burn up precious cycles). and I toned down the shadows w/ everything else maxed. Ran very well. A new GTX 960 is most definitely in my future.

3 out of 5 eggsIt's ok...

Pros: 4k resolution
Decent chasis
Cheap for 4k
1ms response time
Really even from edge to edge

Cons: Really poor gamma
Really poor color
Really poor viewing angles

Other Thoughts: You get what you pay for here. With a TN panel you never expect it to reproduce colors well or have a correct gamma. What I was surprised with the most is how even it is from side to side when looking at it straight on. The colors don't change along the edges, and the lighting doesn't get darker on the edges either. Of all of the plethora of 4k monitors out that use the same 28" TN panel, this is the best, by millions of miles. But the panel is still pretty awful. You would be better off getting a really solid 1440p IPS monitor for the same price. In fact, the ASUS PB278Q is one of the best monitors ever IMO. I've used Eizo, NEC, every 4k monitor in existence from Samsung UD970, to the LG31mu97, to the ASUS PB328Q, even the iMac 5k and Dell 5k. It's not time for 4k yet. Maybe next year...

5 out of 5 eggsGet a DP 1.2 cable

Pros: Clean clear color. Works on my Mac and Windows.

Cons: I am getting old and I find myself leaning in at the monitor, which makes edge to edge viewing weird.

If you (and your eyes) are getting old, you might want to carefully consider how close you sit and your desk setup when looking at any 4K monitor.

I, like many others, had problems with the initial install and had to RMA my first monitor. I still had random flickers with my 2nd monitor, so I started researching and realized that there is a quality/testing difference between DP 1.1 and 1.2 cables. I ponied up for the 1.2 cable and ALL my flickering and refresh problems were fixed. YMMV

4 out of 5 eggsGot it replaced, however...

Pros: Great color reproduction. 4k@60 is fantastic, especially for gaming. Build quality is great.

Cons: None really. Previous panel had a dead pixel but this one is perfect.

Other Thoughts: For some reason mine shipped without the back input cover. No idea why. That in combination with a damaged stand makes me not want to order from either ASUS or newegg again.

2 out of 5 eggsDead pixel

Pros: Fantastic looking screen. Pretty much everything about it is great: 4k, 60 Hz, etc.

Cons: Unfortunately my screen has a stuck pixel. So what would otherwise be a 5-star review is a 2-star review.

Other Thoughts: I don't think waiting 2 weeks to fix a dead pixel is worth it. Thankfully the stuck pixel is near the edge of the screen so it isn't distracting. But I'm disappointed in ASUS for sending me a defective monitor.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I am sorry to hear that ASUS LCD has a dead pixel. Have you already sent this monitor in to be serviced? I would be more than happy to set up an RMA for you to have this issue fixed for you. As your PB287Q monitor has a zero bright dot warranty.

1 out of 5 eggsgreat size and resolution... but

Pros: Great resolution and features.

Cons: With any moving image you can see the monitor is split in half left to right. The top half and bottom half do not mesh properly and there is distortion across the middle until the picture movement stops. Watching video or playing games is horrible on this monitor. Going to have to send it back. 4K is not ready for primetime.

Other Thoughts: pb287q settings: display port 1.2, 60hz, native resolution
gpu- evga gtx780 with current driver as of 10/23/14
i7 980 clocked at 4.2 ghz
asus rampage 3 mb
12gb ram
3X128gb ssds in raid 0 on intel raid card
win7 ultimate

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Jonny80s,

Thank you for your purchase of an ASUS PB287 LCD display monitor. I am sorry to hear about your screen distortions, and that you are considering sending back the monitor. I hope you will consider an exchange rather than a replacement. We would have to lose a valuable customer like yourself. If you have any questions or inquires about your recent purchase, please feel free to email me at with reference number N141085692.

Thank you for being a loyal ASUS customer!

5 out of 5 eggsPB287q

Pros: Very crisp image. Nice color. No dead pixels. Fast response.
Horizontal viewing angle. Stand is adjustable to minimize effect of narrow viewing angle.

Cons: Vertical viewing angle. When looking down the monitor, color become blue.
Even if I sit exact in front, I see color become slightly blue at the bottom edge. But it's not very bad for normal use.

Other Thoughts: Many people reported losing display port connection after sleep, or after turn off power button. I had the same issue. I had to pull AC plug off and on to get recovered.

In my case, I edited BIOS setting and changed primary graphics to "PCIE" from "On Board/AUTO". I never see the issue after this. It may be better to disable on board graphics if your mother board has.

About small font, and hard to see issue. I found Linux, even gnome2 automatically adjust size of icons and font. Font become smooth, not simple magnify.
Windows 7 is very bad for scaling. We can try "make text easier to see" option. But texts are simply magnified in some applications like notepad. It doesn't look good. Windows 8 / 10 look much better. May be we should try windows 10 preview version for now.

If you use firefox, If you type about:config in address bar, and search for
and change from -1 to 1.7 (or any size you like.), Most web pages look very nice. I don't see broken layout like we see when we change font size setting.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic

Pros: Colors are equal to or better low end IPS displays and by far better then any TN panel I have ever seen.

Also viewing agnels are fantastic for a tn panel. People constant harp on this point about viewing agnels, I want to make this clear for a TN panel its GREAT, no its not an IPS but there good enough that this point dosn't really matter.

Cons: My current GPU is 7970 is too slow.

5 out of 5 eggsAsus PB287Q 4K

Pros: This monitor is awesome. With the last driver from Nvidia, I have noticed such a great increase in performance playing games. I have never owned a TN panel, but this one is as accurate as any IPS ultra sharp dell that I have ever owned. The colors are wonderful. I got this monitor to experience 4k and didn't expect it to be anything but a basic monitor. I am so blown away with the clarity, the sharpness, and how wonderful games look on it. I highly recommend this monitor.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: If you are on the fence about this monitor, worried that a TN panel won't work for you. Don't give it another thought, this monitor can be used by content creators and gamers, which I think is a perfect mix.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome bargain 4K monitor!

Pros: 10-bit color TN panel looks great - best looking TN panel I have ever seen...even better than my Asus ROG Swift!!

4K content looks absolutely stunning - literally jaw dropping --> thanks to YouTube for providing some native 4K content :D

60Hz refresh rate (using DisplayPort 1.2 option)

Highly adjustable stand (height, tilt, pivot, rotate)

Outstanding build quality by Asus

1/3 the price of the cheapest IPS 4K monitor

Picture-in-picture feature is very nice to have and works well

I got mine as an "Open Box" item from Newegg and saved $100 ....W00T!!

Cons: Still a TN panel

OSD menu navigation buttons are a bit of a pain, but you get used to them after using them a few times - Asus should have used the exact same OSD menu button and joystick as on the ROG Swift!

Does not have 120Hz refresh rate

Does not have G-Sync (or FreeSync)

Other Thoughts: This is an outstanding 4K monitor for anyone considering venturing into the UHD world of computing. If you take the time to calibrate this monitor (default out-of-the-box settings are horrible), you will find out just how nice this monitor looks!

What I really hate is when people buy this monitor, but don't do any kind of homework or research whatsoever and call it a bad monitor. And the other mistake made by a majority of non-tech savvy customers is they try to compare a $600 4K TN panel monitor to a $2000+ 4K IPS monitor. That's an apples-to-oranges comparison people - wake up and get with the program! This monitor works perfectly fine and does exactly as Asus designed it to do.

I was able to get it set up and running within 5 minutes with no issues whatsoever. Running at 60Hz and all looks awesome! No flickering at all and no problems switching it to Displayport 1.2 within the OSD on the monitor. No popping sounds either, so no problems with the monitor speakers or the monitor itself. Though I have heard that muting the speakers in the OSD menue resolves this issue..

IMPORTANT: People who have impaired vision and/or require reading glasses - you will need to increase the font size scaling within the windows using the personalization option. Fair warning, if left at default settings, the font size in menus and on certain websites is extremely small!

All-in-all, this is a fantastic budget option for those looking to enjoy 4K right now without having to spend over three times as much money.

If you are willing to spend $300 more, AOC will be releasing a 4K 60Hz monitor that has G-Sync next month (Oct 2014) that will cost retail $799. If you are willing to spend $200 more for G-Sync, then I would recommend you wait and buy that 4K monitor instead).
