5 out of 5 eggsSometimes Older Is Better

Pros: Razor-sharp images.
Well made.
Best stand in the business.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I bought this monitor and immediately started applying icc profiles to calibrate the color. Frustrating.. nothing worked well. Then I went back to the default icc, set the mode to "Standard", and simply turned down the brightness. Bingo.. test images against contrast, black level, and white saturation now show a perfect balance. If you have a monitor calibrator, go for it, otherwise just leave it alone for the best image.

Everybody cries about the lack of an HDMI port. Why? DVI is the exact same signal! No need for HDMI unless you want sound, and a monitor is no place for sound.. get some decent desktop speakers!

The default brightness threw me off for awhile.. you must turn it back using the monitor's controls (not the graphics controls) or you will burn your eyes. Use of graphics controls will throw off the mix of contrast and brightness, and thus upset image quality.

The PWM flickering thing is complete nonsense - it's no factor in this monitor whatsoever. No one can see any flickering at those frequencies. PWM flickering is used as a scapegoat excuse for other factors that people don't like in a monitor.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect

Pros: Excellent monitor, with a perfect price point. It's above the cheap stuff, but not the cutting edge / graphic design price point.

Swivel, tilt, rotate, height, adjustments with easy clip on/off locking mechanism.

Cons: Not 4k.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat monitors, but display port cable not included.

Pros: Excellent color quality, great resolution, and simple to set up.

Cons: Comes with VGA and DVI cables, but no display port cables. Earlier versions of Dell's 24" Ultrasharp screen did come with them, so tack on an additional $10 expense per screen.

Other Thoughts: For the price these should come with display port cables, but overall I'm satisfied by the quality and ease of use.

5 out of 5 eggsJust what we needed

Pros: We needed to replace one of our monitors in our office. I was able to get it fast and replace it in one day.

Cons: Wish there was a HDMI connecting on it, but it was my fault to not see that it didnt.

Other Thoughts: Great product. Also like to buy Dell for our office and Newegg makes is easier and faster.

2 out of 5 eggsRefurbished replacement.

Pros: Good color. Fast response from Dell, replacements came next day.

Cons: 1st refurb was scuffed up and had several small screen defects.
2nd is clean although a little dark, I'll keep this one.

Other Thoughts: Dell was reluctant to send a 2nd, I had to count defects.
Bought this brand thinking high quality, now I don't know.

3 out of 5 eggsDead at 8 months.

Pros: Good color.

Cons: No display when computer woke up, monitor will not POST.

Other Thoughts: Rev A01 with some backlight bleed and no dead pixels.

Dell phone support was helpful, it took about 30 minutes to complete a service request. They'll send me another monitor, new I hope. After arrival, I need to return the defective using their prepaid shipping label.

5 out of 5 eggsClarity is awsome

Pros: Great monitor! beautiful colors and very bright and vibrant. I do not use it for photo editing or video editing I bought them for gaming. 8ms is high but I personally can not notice an issue. I just bought two more for a triple monitor setup.

Cons: None I am very happy with it.

Other Thoughts: There are several sites with configurations for colors to get it just right. Otherwise buying one of the calibration spiders may be a good idea if you want to make sure you have the color set properly.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: I bought this because I'm a stickler for aspect ratio. 16:9 is too narrow for me, but I needed to move on from 4:3. I was just looking to get something in a 16:10 AR that was affordable, but instead I received one of the best monitors I've ever used.

I'm not a huge imageophile or whatever you want to call it, so I can only sum up my experience in layman's terms. Colors are vibrant, clarity is wonderful, and the controls are easy to use, at least when you need to use them. For the most part the monitor sets itself up.

If you do need to do some configuration (which I did, more in the Cons section) then this monitor does what I wish more did: it gives you an actual on screen menu physically located next to the buttons you need to press. Instead of having to try and remember which buttons did what I could simply navigate the menu about as easily as I would with a mouse.

The only other pro I can add is that this has about every input type you'd need for a computer. In particular I was surprised something this new still had a VGA port, which is good for me since I still work with older equipment sometimes.

Cons: The biggest problem I had with the monitor was its Dynamic Contrast mode, which was enabled by default. I'm not quite sure what it was supposed to do, but what it mostly did was make the bright parts of my games SUPER BRIGHT while the dark parts became very hard to see. I quickly disabled it through the aforementioned easy-to-use menu and things became much better.

Some users might not like the lack of HDMI input; indeed I was a little disappointed since my video card has HDMI out and HDMI cables are a bit more sleek than DVI. However, the monitor does have DisplayPort, which is a FAR superior replacement and something I'd much rather have. Besides, if I absolutely have to hook something up HDMI I can just use an HDMI->DVI adapter, though it's not like this thing has speakers.

Other Thoughts: Like every Dell monitor ever, this has the usual USB hub built into the monitor. I'd add my thoughts on that to the review, but I keep forgetting that the USB ports are there!

5 out of 5 eggsUltra Sharp IPS is the best

Pros: Dell's IPS Panel Displays are priced reasonable for its fine quaility.

Cons: none

4 out of 5 eggsGood but not great

Pros: We have half a dozen of these monitors in our office. Newegg's latest price reduction spurred another buy. We are a photography shop, and use these panels as second or third displays for holding palette panels, open documents, etc. The U2412M is getting to be old and is being replaced by the U2415. Expect more screaming deals as the U2412M is phased out.

The U2412M offers excellent viewing angles and color fidelity (after calibration). Black levels are very low, giving superb contrast at useable brightness levels. Five of the displays we own (including the one purchased last week) show very little backlight bleed. The sixth is worse, but still at a comparable level to similarly priced monitors from HP or NEC.

The aspect ratio of the display is 16:10 rather than the more popular 16:9. This gives more useable desktop area for actual work. Unless you use your monitor mostly for watching videos, this is a good thing.

If you use a hardware-based monitor calibration tool, the U2412M supports DDC calibration. All adjustments are carried out automatically in the monitor itself, minimizing banding and other visual artifacts.

Lag is middle of the pack. This likely reflects the age of the design. Lag performance was very good by 2011 standards, not so great in 2015.

Finally, the adjustability of the U2412M is very good with the exception of not going high enough for taller people.

Cons: Out-of-box color and gamma calibration are all over the place. As mentioned above, this isn't an issue if you have a monitor calibration tool available.

The panel in the U2412M is a 6-bit one rather than 8-bits as are found on better quality displays. This leads to some visually jarring transitions if you are editing pictures or videos. This is the main reason that none of our 2412M displays are used for actual editing. Compounding this issue is that backlight uniformity is not a strength of the U2412M. Luminance varies significantly across the screen.

As other reviewers mention, there is no HDMI port. If you have a free DVI or DisplayPort outlet on your video card, this isn't a real problem.

The stand provides excellent adjustment except if you are tall enough to want the screen fairly high off your desk. The maximum height is on the short side.

Other Thoughts: Even at four years after it was introduced, the U2412M remains an excellent overall performer in its price range. It is a comfortable screen to work with. Color accuracy and useable contrast are good, and viewing angles excellent. A 1920x1200 resolution is superior to the 1920x1080 usually found with similarly priced monitors.

You can find sub-$250 monitors that outperform the Dell U2412M in any single area. Besting the combination of features requires more cash.

I would not recommend using the U2412M for critical photo or video editing unless you are on a student budget.
