4 out of 5 eggsGood but not great

Pros: We have half a dozen of these monitors in our office. Newegg's latest price reduction spurred another buy. We are a photography shop, and use these panels as second or third displays for holding palette panels, open documents, etc. The U2412M is getting to be old and is being replaced by the U2415. Expect more screaming deals as the U2412M is phased out.

The U2412M offers excellent viewing angles and color fidelity (after calibration). Black levels are very low, giving superb contrast at useable brightness levels. Five of the displays we own (including the one purchased last week) show very little backlight bleed. The sixth is worse, but still at a comparable level to similarly priced monitors from HP or NEC.

The aspect ratio of the display is 16:10 rather than the more popular 16:9. This gives more useable desktop area for actual work. Unless you use your monitor mostly for watching videos, this is a good thing.

If you use a hardware-based monitor calibration tool, the U2412M supports DDC calibration. All adjustments are carried out automatically in the monitor itself, minimizing banding and other visual artifacts.

Lag is middle of the pack. This likely reflects the age of the design. Lag performance was very good by 2011 standards, not so great in 2015.

Finally, the adjustability of the U2412M is very good with the exception of not going high enough for taller people.

Cons: Out-of-box color and gamma calibration are all over the place. As mentioned above, this isn't an issue if you have a monitor calibration tool available.

The panel in the U2412M is a 6-bit one rather than 8-bits as are found on better quality displays. This leads to some visually jarring transitions if you are editing pictures or videos. This is the main reason that none of our 2412M displays are used for actual editing. Compounding this issue is that backlight uniformity is not a strength of the U2412M. Luminance varies significantly across the screen.

As other reviewers mention, there is no HDMI port. If you have a free DVI or DisplayPort outlet on your video card, this isn't a real problem.

The stand provides excellent adjustment except if you are tall enough to want the screen fairly high off your desk. The maximum height is on the short side.

Other Thoughts: Even at four years after it was introduced, the U2412M remains an excellent overall performer in its price range. It is a comfortable screen to work with. Color accuracy and useable contrast are good, and viewing angles excellent. A 1920x1200 resolution is superior to the 1920x1080 usually found with similarly priced monitors.

You can find sub-$250 monitors that outperform the Dell U2412M in any single area. Besting the combination of features requires more cash.

I would not recommend using the U2412M for critical photo or video editing unless you are on a student budget.

2 out of 5 eggsLasted 6 months

Pros: Looked great and worked great for about 6 months.

Cons: It started having issues where it would switch between on and power saving mode in the middle of games. I check wires and even switched from DVI to HDMI to Displayport wires and it kept doing the same thing. It eventually shut off on me and never came back on.

Other Thoughts: I have the model up from this one and it has worked flawlessly for over 4 years now. No complaints. This one was just made cheap though.

5 out of 5 eggsBetter than my work monitor

Pros: 1920 x 1200 resolution
16:10 aspect ratio
reasonably priced compared to other high-end monitors

Cons: no HDMI input
more expensive that low-end consumer monitors

Other Thoughts: I bought this monitor for home. It is better and nicer than the standard 1920 x 1080 resolution Dell Ultrasharp monitors we use at work. I am a programmer, and the additional height makes a huge difference. It also pivots if you want to put it in portrait mode for viewing more lines of code.

4 out of 5 eggsFlat-panel tech still sucks

Pros: 1920x1200 is, unlike every other widescreen resolution besides 2560x1440, a respectable resolution that you can actually scale something to and it not look awful. Panel has good color, usually, and very good viewing angle. I actually have a crappier Dell 1080p 24" panel sitting right next to this one and the viewable angle is dramatically better. Stand is very good and allows you to use the monitor sideways without a lot of effort.

Cons: Despite something like 20 years of development and all the new fangled tech in the world, there's still ghosting at freaking 60fps on this panel. It's not as bad as I've seen, but you're still not getting the image quality that top of the line CRTs were giving you in the late 90s. Furthermore, really dark scenes are not good on this panel. There's a strange effect that looks like the monitor is really reflective or something. Coming out of a fullscreen game that alters the gamma setting will cause a really obvious yellowing to occur. I think it does eventually wear off, but it's unattractive.

No HDMI is slightly annoying.

Other Thoughts: At this point, it's either this monitor or a 2560x1440 monitor. 1440 is whole multiple of 480 and 720, so that's really awesome. At 5/8 the pixels, this monitor is less likely to give you performance fits, though. Pick your poison. Don't pick 1080p.

5 out of 5 eggsVery nice

Pros: Very nice display for what I do (mostly programming, not gaming or image work), text is noticably crisper than the old Dell 2001FP that I had been using - which I would rate as a good display itself. I don't see any sign of the yellow tint that others have mentioned, though initially I did have a problem with all whites being bright yellow. Swapping cables (VGA) around fixed it.

Cons: The buttons for the on-screen display are small and the same black as the frame, which makes them hard to see in low light. It's also hard for someone with large hands to attach the display cable. It's easier to detach the screen from the stand.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat monitor

Pros: Easy to setup, very bright colors, perfect aspect ratio and pixel size. Plenty of adjustability, and all the cables you might need are included.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I bought this monitor because the resolution and size give a nice, non-stretched, small pixel, which is great for viewing and long days spent on the computer.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat monitor, great value

Pros: See Other thoughts section for a little background on my upgrade to this monitor.

The set up: Looking at monitors I see a lot of things in reviews and specs about the stand but until setting this thing up I don’t think I appreciated the value of a quality monitor stand. It may sound weird to be so enthusiastic but the stand on this thing is AWESOME. It slides vertically about 10” and just sticks in place where you leave it, no knobs or loose fittings. It also rotates horizontally about 140 degrees (this is a guess I did not measure), which is really nice. Again the movement is solid and it sticks in place where you leave it. Lastly the stand has a good weight to it, is hefty and not cheap feeling at all. No tools needed to assemble, it all just slides together and latches in. I love the stand, and never thought I would say that.

The monitor itself also has a very nice quality feel to it. The buttons for the menu are laid out more logically than I've seen other monitors have, and the connectors all feel very solid. There are all the standard video connectors, including displayport if you want to go in that direction which is a nice touch. It has a built in USB hub with 4 connections, so if you want to plug your keyboard/mouse/thumbdrive right in you have that option which is great. Lastly it takes a standard IEC power plug (like your PSU on your computer) and doesn't have an external brick for power, which I like as it reduces clutter.

In action: I do occasional photo/video work at home so getting the color set up properly was important. The menu on the monitor itself is probably the best I have used, and I can navigate through settings easily and without trouble which I definitely cannot say about a lot of others. I used a professional calibration device to get ambient light readings and color settings, and once I got the brightness/contrast dialed in (60 and 55 if you care) the software didn't need to change the color profile at all. For a monitor of this price to have such accurate color out of the box is a really great value.

The viewing angles are great, a big improvement over other monitors I've used in the past. I can stand up and work without moving the monitor if I want to (although the great stand makes moving it easy). This is huge to me and again a great value for this price. In gaming I see no ghosting or any kind of artifacting on fast moving objects, and video playback is crisp as well.

In summary, this is a great monitor and a great value. I may try to pick a couple up for my office at work so I can enjoy the same quality there. Great color, viewing angles, no ghosting or artifacting, and the best stand I have used make this an easy recommendation and a no hesitation 5 eggs.

Cons: It's tough to find cons as this is a great monitor.

I guess if you love using HDMI the lack of that port might be a con, but to be fair the DVI and display port make up for that. It even has VGA although it would be a total waste to use analogue video on a monitor this nice.

It's also a little heavy so if you are disabled or elderly you might have trouble putting it together, but I don't think anyone else would. I am really reaching for cons here so please don't think this is much of an issue.

Other Thoughts: Background: I am a frugal person, to put it nicely. I had been using a pretty old Samsung 21.5” monitor for about 5 years and even though it wasn't top of the line it was good enough for me. I do the standard web surfing, a good amount of gaming, and a little photo/video work at home. After using some larger monitors at work I was thinking it would be nice to upgrade, and when I got a scratch on the monitor moving some stuff around it was finally time and I knew that the black friday sales would be a good chance for a deal.

So when I saw an Ultrasharp with a great price on my favorite reseller I jumped at it. Why?

1 - It’s an Ultrasharp, and although it’s not a high end one I've used others in the past and know they look great.
2 - The 24” screen is a very good size for my desk and seating situation.
3 - IPS panel with low latency. In short this means great colors and viewing angle without ghosting or other issues during fast moving stuff like gaming or videos.

Check out the Pros section above for more detail, but I am incredibly happy with this monitor. A nice monitor for your computer is like a nice seat for your bicycle, once you get a good one you will never want to go back to a cheap one because it improves your whole experience.
