5 out of 5 eggsjust what I needed

Pros: Works great. I got this to use with a Lenovo S12 Netbook that I had migrated from XP to Linux Mint 17. It was plug 'n play all the way. GNOME PPP is the dial-up software.

The netbook lacks its own modem, and having only dial-up at a remote cabin, I didn't want all the baggage that my WIn 7 laptop brought doing too many involuntary updates over a creaky phone line.

Cons: none so far

Other Thoughts: Some people ask why dial-up? It's so ancient.

Answer: sometimes there's nothing else available, but wow, is it slow! Still, it can be faster than driving to town for some wi-fi.

2 out of 5 eggsDoesn't Play Sound Through PC

Pros: Works great.

Cons: Doesn't play the phone line sound through the PC's audio. I really rely on this to know when the dialup is having trouble connecting, line is busy, noisy, etc. All the other USB and internal modems I've used have had this feature, so I'm downgrading it.

Other Thoughts: If you don't care about hearing the dialup sound through your PC, then give this 5 eggs.

5 out of 5 eggsBeep Beep I'm a modem

Pros: It's a reliable performer, good build quality.
Working well with Windows Fax & Scan.
Does exactly what you'd expect.

Cons: Price is higher than average, but I wanted something fairly reliable and solid.

1 out of 5 eggsdistorted fax tone

Pros: price, usb

Cons: Used the FaxTalk server and had trouble. Worked with a tech at GetFaxing (he was great) and recorded the fax tone being produced and sent it to me and I can hear the distortion. Replaced with USR5638 internal and problems are gone

5 out of 5 eggsVery very nice

Pros: 1. Good dialup performance for a USB powered unit.

I'm a fan of US Robotics for 10+ years, back to the great V.everything modems. I still have one, but haven't tried a direct comparison.

But the V.everything is not mobile, whereas this unit is.

2. It runs at reasonable temperature. A prior review raised this question, and high temps are NOT an issue.

3. The included CD/software is useful. As is the included (cheap) telephone cable.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: 1. I haven't tried FAX with this unit.

2. The Rosewill RNX-56USB is less than half the price and may well be the better overall deal. I'm seriously thinking about buying a Rosewill also, as my only other similar/small unit is an old Zoom unit (7 years?)

OTOH this USR unit gets better owner reviews. And given that it costs twice the Rosewill suggests that it may be worth it.

5 out of 5 eggsFixed our issues

Pros: Very easy to install. Worked flawlessly on our old fax server. Windows XP Pro SP3

Cons: No cons yet

Other Thoughts: We setup a PC as a fax server and would get corrupted faxes from some of the hospitals that were sending reports to us. Our software vendor said that this was one of the best USB modems for faxing. I installed it in the server and it solved our issues. Every fax seems to be coming in fine now. No corrupted faxes since.

1 out of 5 eggsBUYER BEWARE - 1 device per PC only!

Pros: No serial port required. Driver installed in Server 2003

Cons: WARNING! Do not try and use more than one of these on the same pc/server. They will not work at the same time.

Other Thoughts: I installed 4 of these on a HP server to use for Microsoft Fax server. First off, they failed to install when connected to a startech 4 port PCI USB card based upon the NEC usb controller. I gave up after several hours and connected them to the built in HP ports. They all installed OK and show up correctly in device manager and in the Fax Server Manager. However, I was getting complaints of faxing not working. I found thru testing that only the last modem connected works. If you unplug a non-working one and plug it in, it becomes the modem that works. When discussing it with a coworker, he told me he had discovered the same problem a year back and never got a solution. Hopefully this post saves someone else from this nightmare! oh.. and yes, i contacted usrobotics and no they did not return my emails or calls.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks with VMWare

Pros: Bought this to try using USB pass through on ESXi 5.1 to a Windows Sever 2008r2 guest running the fax server role. Just add the USB controller and device then install the latest 64 bit drivers from US Robotics.

Cons: None

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great with multiple modems for Joyfax Server

Pros: Small and easy to use. It installs and works with no problems under Win7 64-bit.

Cons: None observed

Other Thoughts: Only the modem I've found without conflicting while installing multiple modems on some computer.
