4 out of 5 eggsUsing as a Fax

Pros: It works. Using Win7 pro with Win7 Driver. It was easy to install and figure out the software interface. Receives Fax documents and able to convert to PDF by printing to PDF. Can control number of rings before answers and the speaker in the modem is loud so you know when a fax is incoming. It has worked well receiving fax documents.

Cons: Sending Faxes. We have analog phones through cable modem. Analog to digital to distant fax which may have additional digital to analog seems to mess up the sync necessary to send a fax. It has failed on the 3 times I tried to send a test fax to my Efax service. Perhaps it will work with other fax devices. Needed to get a DB25 to DB9 serial cable to connect to computer.

Other Thoughts: I am pleased because I really do not need to send many faxes but need reliable fax receiving. I now do not need to pay for the efax service, just using an extra phone line to my business which we have for the credit card terminal.

4 out of 5 eggsSolid

Pros: Ordered a few of these for a SMB that needed a reliable fax line for electronic billing. Solid fax modem. Works as a charm.

Cons: The ports have "play" in them and can wiggle out of the modem. Since this is an external modem it usually gets bumped or moved and this can cause the phone cord to come loose. For the 3 modems I had to use electrical tape to secure the ports.

5 out of 5 eggsRock Solid

Pros: These modems are rock solid and about as standard as possible.

Cons: Nothing notable.

Other Thoughts: I have been using USR modems for years for emergency out of band access, fax servers, and dial in consoles. This one is currently deployed on the console port of a Cisco router for remote access when network configuration changes. It just works, and USR modems are the easiest to config. I can't really tell you much about the speed and all since I mainly use these at 9600 or 19200.
