4 out of 5 eggsWorked well with Win8

Pros: Simple to install. This is just a basic device without any extra buttons and whistles. I have a client up in the mountains that is just using a dial-up connection and this modem did the trick, right up to when the power came over the phone line and visibly burned the board.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: It's just a modem, but it does respond to V.90 and V.92 commands. I'm buying a new one for $4 less than the last time.

5 out of 5 eggsNice little modem

Pros: This modem was easy to install and works as expected. I downloaded the driver from the US Robotics website and it is installed without difficulty. Now, I can send and receive faxes from my computer conveniently. Email does not work for everything -- it is nice to have the fax function.

Cons: This card only contains one JR19 socket. I would prefer two sockets so that I could pass the phone signal through the card and on to my telephone. I got around this problem by simply plugging a signal splitter into the wall -- and all is well. Also, driver installation was a little odd. The driver installed just fine, but the user (me) receives no message at the end that the installation was finished and successful. The installation program simply shuts down without communicating any information about installation outcome.

Other Thoughts: My build components are as follows:
Antec Gaming Series One black steel case
GIGABYTE GA-Z87X-UD3H motherboard
Intel Core i7-4771 Haswell 3.5GHz LGA 1150 processor
Dynatron K17 92mm CPU cooler

2 out of 5 eggsWon't connect

Pros: Plug and Play

Cons: Will not connect to my fuel terminal. Two other modems that are PCI and tried on the same line work just fine. I can't figure out why it won't connect and the maker of the fuel terminal have exhausted every trick they know. They say send it back.

Other Thoughts: Would have never bought this but the new computer at the desk only has PCI Express slots. Now I have to find another modem that will work or switch to a different computer that has PCI slots that will work with my older modems.

1 out of 5 eggsTook down my server with blue screens

Pros: n/a

Cons: After installing it and bringing my server back up (running Windows Server 2008 R2), I got NMI: Parity Check / Memory Parity Error blue screens. Even removing the modem wasn't enough to get rid of the blue screens: I had to wipe out the install and bring my Hyper-V VMs back online. Took down VOIP, email, AD, and everything else for nearly a day.

Other Thoughts: I suspect there was a hardware issue with the modem, but shocked it resulted in the devastation that occurred. I've never seen a device like the modem take down a server so effectively, and I've seen plenty of strange things. Makes me wonder if there was a bug in the device drivers that combined with the HW issue wreaked havoc. Probably very rare that this issue would arise, but I have no data one way or the other to support that assertion.

5 out of 5 eggsWindows Pro 64bit Fax & Scan Compatible

Pros: Works with Windows 7 Pro 64
Works with Windows Fax & Scan
Easy install

Cons: Made in China.
Instructions for install (if needed) consits of 4 pictures and no text.
Driver selection from cd is a bit vague.

Other Thoughts: I needed this to receive faxes without intervention on a Windows 7 64bit Pro computer that only has PCI-e slots. This modem was one of few that newegg carried that fit the bill.
I inserted the disk and ran the driver install, shut down, installed the modem, booted up, added windows fax and scan and received a fax. That was easy...
Other reviewers report windows listing this as an LSI or Agere modem, but using the supplied 64-bit driver, the system list this: U.S. Robotics Soft Modem. Windows update said it was up to date on the driver also.
By the way, this install is on a Vonage line over At&t dsl. It seems to be working nicely.
Kudos to Newegg. I placed the order Tuesday at 7:12pm Central and UPS rolled in Thursday evening at 6:59pm for $1.99 shipping.

5 out of 5 eggsNice Win7(64) soft modem

Pros: I put it in one of the PCI Express x16 slots on my GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD7 motherboard.

Win 7 Pro (64) it recognized it and installed all the drivers with the initial install.

Device Manager shows it as a Agere PCI-SV92EX Soft Modem

Cons: it's not free.

Other Thoughts: I wish all peripherals were this easy.
