5 out of 5 eggsActiontec GT701D

Pros: This modem works perfectly with Centurylink, but takes calling their customer service to set it up properly. Setting this modem up only took about 15 minutes, and given how simple it is; it's fairly easy to set up.

Since Centurylink pumped their modem rental fee to nearly $10 a month, this will pay for itself in four months.

Cons: Only one Ethernet port, so if you're using more than one computer you'll need to get yourself a router. Luckily I had a router sitting around from when I had service with comcast (since theirs only had one Ethernet port as well.

Other Thoughts: Quite frankly you're better off getting this little guy for a super cheap price (since it does what it needs to), and get yourself a nice router for 40 to 50$. Both of which will probably do far better than the terrible router your DSL provider will probably give you, then charge you enormous fees for. I wish I had gotten this years ago, considering I've spent hundreds over the past few years in "rental fees" for a modem.

3 out of 5 eggsGet what you pay for

Pros: When it worked, it worked without issues. Given pairing this with AT&T's DSL service, it did the job well. Overall, it was a solid unit.

Cons: Link retrains and loss of signal failures (which regrettably happen frequently at my location) simply overload the small unit, essentially rendering it a "brick" until it's able to catch-up. Sometimes that could take as long as 25-30 minutes.

This means accessing it to do anything becomes near impossible.

Other Thoughts: If you have decent DSL service, this thing should just fly under the radar and do its job. If you have AT&T, it will work, but probably better off buying the standard AT&T named Pace / Netgear unit Best Buy carries.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great on centurylink

Pros: Slightly faster and stable connection speeds (on 3mbps down and 500kbps up DSL link) than the stock dsl modem provided by centurylink.
Good price for a good, working product.

Cons: Centurylink oversold bandwidth in my area and this modem helps slightly to squeeze out some extra throughput. So the con is the service provider, not the Actiontec modem.

Other Thoughts: My DSL connection does not require logins or usernames, so I just plugged this in and it works! I set it to bridge-mode and use my tomato router to control my LAN settings. I probably should buy a second spare...

5 out of 5 eggsGreat DSL Modem

Pros: I had an Actiontec M1000 for over 5 years and never had any trouble at all, ran 24 x 7 and then it finally died. I needed to get the internet back quickly so went to a local shop.

This has to be the easiest DSL modem in the world to configure as all I needed to know was my PP0E username and password. It has an auto configuration routine and though it takes a while, it works perfectly. When it prompted I entered the username/password and just waited for it to complete and I was back up an running. Very good speed and no drops.

Cons: None to report.

Other Thoughts: Not really a con, but the LED's are bright, but it sits on top of my tower under the desk so it isn't a problem. One of the best things is that it is a much smaller unit and like the original modem it runs cool, actually even cooler -- as in just warm, not hot.

I had originally picked up a Netgear DM111PSP and can't say anything good about it as it only allowed me to log into it once and after setting it up, it never was able to synch up with my ISP and it ran very very hot. Brought it back and got this and it was night and day where this one simply works without any glitches.

Hoping to get 5 1/2 years out of this one as well, but at least it won't die due to overheating, as it runs amazingly cool. I have a 20Mbps line with Centurylink and everything works great. They went out of their way to make this a simple installation, about 12 minutes and up and running.
