5 out of 5 eggsGreat Service

Pros: Trying to get my ISP's help was absolutely useless. D-link support was extremely helpful with setup. My Case Number was C6612469 and I was assisted by Badge# AR004205. He stayed with me on the phone and walked me through a couple of setup attempts until it worked properly.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: Expecting my ISP that received $5.30 a month from me for about 6 years for a cheap DSL modem to give me correct information for setting up a third party modem was a little too much. They just wanted to bail. They can have their $5.30 per month DSL Modem.

1 out of 5 eggsNot satisfied

Pros: None that I can think of that makes it better than a $40 router with or w/o wireless.

Cons: Very basic settings, Not user friendly, I don't even think they knew what they where talking about when the put down NAT as a setting that enables internet, the real meaning is NAT Network Address Translation, it takes two incompatible IP addresses and translates them to connect them.

Also no matter what I changed it still disconnects my internet every hour or 4, which gets annoying when you come home from work and you sit down to play some games with your friends and the internet drops and reconnects.

Other Thoughts: Go guy yourself a nice $40 router and make sure it has good reviews and enough settings to play around with in case you ever have problems in the future.

5 out of 5 eggsVery Good DSL Modem

Pros: Easy to set up. Came up quick and connected.

Cons: None yet. Due to other warnings posted, I have not attempted a firmware upgrade.

Other Thoughts: My Windstream telephone company modem would drop connections periodically and DHCP on the modem would quit, requiring a modem reboot. Windstream wanted $120 for a Sagem replacement modem that was not rated very high in reviews. The D-Link modem was half that price and works well.

4 out of 5 eggsThe best modem you will get here.

Pros: I bought this modem to replace the standard one that comes from Verizon. I wanted the four Ethernet ports and more control over my modem. That is exactly what I got and the modem works quite well. I also got a slight speed bump for my downloads, about 5-10%. I use SpeedTest frequently, and my previous modem was just a touch slower.

Cons: The reason why I knocked a star off is because of the poor documentation. This lack of documentation is an indirect reason why this modem gets some bad reviews. A lot of people do not have the expertise to do do the necessary troubleshooting. From what I have seen, it appears that most people do not understand what a DHCP lease is. You have to either wait for your old modems IP address lease to expire, or tell your old modem to release it before you start to set the new modem up.

D-Link would be smart to put the most frequently used configurations online. This would eliminate a lot of confusion. As it is, the information you get from online forums is sketchy, and fraught with misunderstanding of the technology.

Better yet, D-Link would be smart to put specific ISP configurations in the firmware. A menu selection of which country you are from and which ISP you are using would be useful. As it was, the United States was not one of the country choices in the setup. We fall under "Other" for some reason.

Other Thoughts: Don't upgrade the firmware. Some people have had issues. From what I have researched, the update is not necessary. The firmware updates are older than the shipping modem, so the modem has the latest. The most recent update is from 7/24/2012.

I use Verizon, so here are the settings I used (manual configuration, not auto):

VPI / VCI: 0 / 35
Connection Type: MER (MAC Encapsulated Routing)
Encapsulation Mode: LLC/SNAP - BRIDGING
Service Name: mer_0_0_35_2
Service Category: UBR (Without PCR)
QoS: Disabled
IP Address: Automatically Assigned (IP, gateway, and DNS)
Service State: Enabled
NAT: Enabled
Firewall: Enabled
IGMP Multicast: Enabled
Quality Of Service: Disabled

Auto configuration should work just fine. If you do not want to get into the internals, just connect the modem to your phone line and let it sit over night. The old modems IP address should expire by morning and your new modem should have its own. You can tell when the Internet LED is either solid green or blinking green. If it is not lit green, then connect to the router and try auto config, then manual if that fails.

I hope that this helps some of those that are considering this modem, especially those who use Verizon. This is a pretty good modem, and really easy to setup once you understand what is going on.

4 out of 5 eggsEasy to set up and configure

Pros: Configuration was automatic with the setup Wizard and my Wifi router connected plug-and-play -- nothing could be easier.

Upload and download speeds have increased notably compared to my ISP-provided modem.

Cons: DO NOT FLASH WITH D-LINK FIRMWARE!

I purchased this modem from Newegg because a previous one I had had purchased from another site was bricked when I flashed it.

Other Thoughts: The modem has port forwarding for many common games but still requires setting DMZ on for some older on-line games.

3 out of 5 eggsFirmware Update Destroyed Modem

Pros: Easy setup (1+ egg) -- the modem was up and running in less than two minutes and this was with the manual setup. Seemed to stay connected (1+ egg) well (my old Comtrend modem got where it was dropping connection frequently). Attaching a WiFi router to this one was literally plug and play (1+ egg).

Cons: DO NOT FLASH WITH THE FIRMWARE PROVIDED ON THE D-LINK SITE!

Flashing the modem with the firmware on the D-Link site will render it inoperable. Even though the D-Link site states that the firmware is for revisions A or B and the modem say's it's a 2540B, don't be fooled -- it is not one of these HW revisions. Flashing the firmware on the D-Link site will destroy the modem. I wish I'd looked closer at the reviews here before doing this.

(-1 egg for D-Link's firmware flash wizard not detecting and preventing a flash with an incompatible firmware version and -1 egg for D-link providing a firmware that will destroy their new modems and not making it darn well clear that it will do this).

Other Thoughts: Not sure if it's a Con or something not set up right but I had a hard time staying connected to a game server, even though the proper ports were forwarded in the setup. No eggs off for this though as all other sites connected fine before the firmware flash bricked the device.

The installation CD was also broken (literally cracked in half) upon receipt (in a shrink-wrapped box) (I should take an egg off for this but I won't) so I've got a replacement product coming and hopefully will be reimbursed (I ordered from another site but more people come here to assess products so I thought I'd post here).
