2 out of 5 eggsMediocre

Pros: Easy setup for most ISP settings, sometimes as easy as putting CD in PC and entering settings that way although that method is very hit and miss.

Cons: These modems tend to die after 12-14 months on average, usually just out of warranty. Some die completely, some slowly die by dropping connection every few minutes (like a recent customer of mine). Zoom support is non-existent, so it is easier to just buy a new modem than try to get any support or warranty help from them.

Other Thoughts: For 7 years now I have worked for a 3rd party ISP that offers DSL throughout the US and Canada but the customers need to buy their own modems. These Zoom brand modems are some of the most popular out there sold in local stores and online since they are basic cheap models. Unfortunately that also explains their quality and build as they tend to die after 12-14 months on average. We have had some that last 2-3 years, and others that die after 3 months but the usual life span is at or just over a year.
Some people have gone to the Actiontecs and DLinks and had hit and miss luck with them, although some Actiontec models do seem to last longer.

1 out of 5 eggsDo not buy zoom

Pros: none

Cons: Zoom customer support SUCKS. Modem quit working after a year. First time I called Zoom, the CSR I spoke to was NOT helpful, did not know what he was talking about, was rude and really didn't care about helping me. The second time I called it was close to the end of the business day and was put on hold for nearly 15 minutes only to be sent to a voice mail and never could get a hold of a person. Plus they are only open during east coast business hours. I will never buy another zoom product ever again.

5 out of 5 eggsSmooth Sailing

Pros: Installation took less than 1 hour. Just followed the instructions, yes you must know your adsl username and password to place in new modem. Easily retrieved them from ATT. I used their on-line chat - took 15 min. Had to reset pw because I forgot what it was. Additional computers connected with no further actions required. No drop in speed.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Received product from Newegg the next day with UPS ground. Wow. Newegg has never given me problems with returns - customer service is top notch. Fantastic service...I'll be back.

4 out of 5 eggsRunning ADSL 7down/1up for 4 years

Pros: Works very well with Linux [Debian Sid], OS X 10.4-10.6 and Windows XP.

The wizards for configuring are archaic, but then again I find the wizards to be useless opposed to working in the trenches via the Web Interface.

Cons: Requires a bit of knowledge on configuring with your DSLAM.

Other Thoughts: The product has been up for 4 years running with Qwest.

1 out of 5 eggsDon't waste your money

Pros: It was cheap.

Cons: It was a pain from the beginning. You have to go into your network properties and change the settings, just to get into the modem's settings from your web browser. After several hours of trying to get it to work, and talking to my DSL customer service, I tried the zoom tech support. Don't waste your time. The number is no longer in service.
