4 out of 5 eggsmodem router

Pros: Opened the NAT for Xbox One. So far it is working well and the speeds seem up to par.

Cons: Had to hard reset it 3 times before it detected the DSL connection. One egg off for the DSL detection issues.

2 out of 5 eggsDisappointed

Pros: Seems to work OK.

Cons: The range is pretty limited. My home is not that large, and the wifi will not reach upstairs without and extender (also Netgear, and also poor). It intermittently drops the connection randomly and frequently. I regret spending this much on it and expected better performance.

Other Thoughts: I would not buy again.

4 out of 5 eggsEasy setup and it works

Pros: Setup was very easy. Had DSL and WiFi setup in 15 minutes. USB port works to share a printer (with scanner support) and/or drives. Decent range. Parental controls seem effective.

Cons: Printer sharing requires a software driver on each pc. Works for win and mac, but no support for linux. User specific web access also requires additional software on host devices - available for win, mac, iOS >5.0, but again no linux support.

Other Thoughts: Gets the job done.

2 out of 5 eggsFlakey

Pros: Doubled my upstream speed. My old modem from my ISP gives me a lowly 750Kbit upstream, and an Actiontec modem I have gives me 1Mbit. This modem gives me 2Mbit. Download speeds same as my old modems.

Cons: A show stopper for me (i'm ceasing use of it after just a few days) is that when I'm playing Battlefield 4 with it, the game will routinely (almost once a round or so) just drop me out saying I've lost my connection. Then I find out that I can't even get to the internet with a browser. I think it's the router side and not the modem side since when this happens the DSL and Internet LEDs are OK, and i can't even get into the router's software with a web browser as it says me there's no internet connection. After a minute or so, it's all fine again, though. Not an issue with either of my older routers. Also, the front LED for LAN connection doesn't blink to indicate activity; it just stays solidly lit. The manual says it's supposed to flash. Netgear forums have lots of complains about ther LED with not just this router but a couple of their other models, too. Netgear supposedly disabled the flashing because people that don't know any better complained. The two wifi (2.4 and 5ghz) LEDs to flash during activity, though.

Other Thoughts: The setup wizard couldn't get me connected with my ISP. Had to manually play around with modem settings for a while, but finally got it to work on my own. ISP is Consolidated Communications. Had to set VIP 0, VCI 35, and protocol to ADSL2+, and choose LLC. It could then connect. Was able to then set protocol back to default of Auto and it could still connect, even though it wouldn't connect originally. go figure.

3 out of 5 eggsDSL No Go

Pros: Extensive controls on the router configuration, Good Range,

Cons: DSL Modem either does not work or does not work with Windstream in Northeast Ohio

Other Thoughts: I spent Three hours on the phone with Netgear Tech support attempting to get the DSL Modem Portion of the unit working. After doing firmware updates and bizarre cycling of power as many times as I could in thirty seconds while holding the reset button in with a paper clip they told me to return it!

I returned it and bought the model without the DSL Modem. I will give five eggs for that model!

2 out of 5 eggsMissing important features

Pros: Easy to set up with AT&T home DSL. Running within 15 minutes.Dual-band radio a plus. Return procedure was easy.

Cons: Missing two required features. 1) Cannot port forward to a different port. For example, forward from port 8080 outside to port 80 inside. 2) Cannot limit access from more than one source address. Only single address or range of contiguous addresses are supported.

3 out of 5 eggsNot THAT Great...

Pros: Gigabit ports all around, fast internet speeds, and tons of configuration options. The options are seriously so numerous that it's overwhelming, at first. The web interface is really easy to take one section at a time and it's easily understood by someone with generic networking knowledge and experience. I was especially a fan of the USB port for sharing printers or flash drives. That will come in handy...

Cons: The WIFI radios won't stay up for more than a day at a time. Fortunately, I have several access points that I was planning on using anyway along with a firewall appliance. However, when about 50% of the capability lies in the WIFI, it's more than a little disappointing when things don't work right. This is a pretty well-documented issue online, so maybe I just got one of the bad ones. I'll see whether or not the wired end of things stays up for a week or so before making the call to send it back.

Other Thoughts: If it wasn't such a process to get this thing up and running, I'd return it in hopes of getting one with working radios. I tried updating firmware and numerous other fixes I found online, but nothing works. I'll probably use it as a bridge until something better comes along.

1 out of 5 eggsForget parental controls

Pros: product works so far

Cons: If one of your reasons for considering this router is the parental controls. Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere. phone support is nonexistent. After a long wait for tech support I was transfered to a tech. the message stated " Bobby is unavailable. Leave a message. Chat support can take over an hour to connect to a tech with very limited knowledge of the product and in the end had no solution to the problem

Other Thoughts: If you don't care about customer support this appears to be a functional router. It works better and more reliably than my old Westell 7500

5 out of 5 eggsEasy Setup

Pros: You can take it from a "Geek" or take it from a guy who does not know much about setting up modems or home wi-fi. Lets put it this way....I simply followed the instructions and it worked the first time. Took me 10 minutes to connect up this unit and I immediatly noticed a big improvement in not only the speed of my wired DSL but in the range and speed to my wi-fi gadgets. I have Centurylink DSL and am now sending back my modem which will save me about 5 bucks a months. All you need to know is your ISP user name/password and the software does the rest. I was expecting a lot of aggrivation and multiple calls to Centurytel but I could not have been more wrong. This unit replaced a Linksys router and the Westell modem supplied by Centurytel. I have no way to quantify the speed improvement but can just say it is much better.

Cons: None yet. I was so pleased with the ease of set up and performace improvement I just had to write a review.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Router

Pros: Seems to be faster than my old router, is working cooler temps than old one, plus am ready for a better service line.

Cons: none, just a little high on the price.
