3 out of 5 eggsGreat while it worked

This review is from: NETGEAR CM500-100NAS DOCSIS 3.0 High Speed Cable Modem - Certified for Comcast XFINITY, Time Warner Cable, Cox, Charter & More

Pros: It worked well for a short while

Cons: Netgear's business practices.

Other Thoughts: This is a good modem, it works well with little problems. Then it has problems (like with everything in life).... so it's still under a year, and I want to RMA it, I know it's defective I've been a Network technician for a year, computer building and coding since I was little. I am an actual HVAC technician right now just fyi. Anyways, you know they really only give you a chance to RMA the product in the first 90 days after purchase. After that, you pay $50, which makes this thing worth... $50... not enough for me to bother with being annoyed at Netgear's technical support and customer service. So anyways, it's good while it lasts and then it's not, like with everything, but Netgear has some very, very shady business practices.

I'm buying a CM600 now, hopefully it'll last for at least 3 years... oh yeah, I've been buying Netgear only product since I was 15 years old (I'm 27 now) and I can tell you I will NEVER, EVER EVER EVER again buy another product with the name of Netgear on it, anything similar either.

Manufacturer Response:

Hey Martin,

We'd like to clear up any confusion and want to assist you in getting an RMA. While we do offer options for expanded service, we stand behind our one year warranty, and you do not have to purchase service if your hardware is defective. Simply email us at netgearteam@netgear.com for help - you will want to include a copy and paste of this review, the current firmware that is on the CM500, and the case numbers that support gave you(we would like to investigate the way that they handled your case).

Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience.

Regards,

NETGEAR Team

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Modem overall.

This review is from: NETGEAR CM500-100NAS DOCSIS 3.0 High Speed Cable Modem - Certified for Comcast XFINITY, Time Warner Cable, Cox, Charter & More

Pros: Bought last August(2015) to replace the garbage rental box from ComC. Speeds are phenomenal and very consistent. Up to 80megs with the 50meg package on off-peak hours(was lucky to get mid 20's with the rental box). And still stays a constant 48-55 during peak hours. Use to have to reset my old box at least once a week, haven't had to touch this thing except a couple of times after a bad storm/power outage hit the area, and everything needed a good power cycle once the juice was back on.

Cons: None so far, setup was ridiculously simple. Easiest modem setup process i have ever experienced. It almost did everything for me. Oh and I saw a couple of mentions of it getting hot. Mine is in a closed cabinet, at the bottom of a bookshelf, and inside the cabinet is my router, the modem, a mid range APC UPS, and a handful of my son's old baby toys... Yeah I know better... but the wife rules the roost, and that's where they have to live.

Other Thoughts: Pays for itself in a year, works better than anything you're going to get from your isp.... Get it!

5 out of 5 eggsWow !

This review is from: NETGEAR CM500-100NAS DOCSIS 3.0 High Speed Cable Modem - Certified for Comcast XFINITY, Time Warner Cable, Cox, Charter & More

Pros: Easy to setup, very fast modem runs like a champ. Went from 8.25MBPS TO 12.83MBPS at my home ISP connection.

Cons: Nothing

Other Thoughts: Price vs value, this is a top notch item to get, if your in need of a new faster modem

5 out of 5 eggsExtremely simple verified TWC

This review is from: NETGEAR CM500-100NAS DOCSIS 3.0 High Speed Cable Modem - Certified for Comcast XFINITY, Time Warner Cable, Cox, Charter & More

Pros: Requires no actual work to set up.
The UI when you login to it is extremely primitive leaving just about everything to the router as it should be.
Lights are not abrasively bright.

Cons: Don't really have a con.

Other Thoughts: Make sure your ISP installer (if they send one) can read the small print on the back. Nothing against the unit its your standard Mac address // serial number print size.

5 out of 5 eggsMuch better than Xfinity X3

This review is from: NETGEAR CM500-100NAS DOCSIS 3.0 High Speed Cable Modem - Certified for Comcast XFINITY, Time Warner Cable, Cox, Charter & More

Pros: Purchased this to replace the Comcast provided Arris modem/router (X3) that was consistently knocking me offline while gaming. I have the Blast 150. This connected quickly at 50 mbps. Needed to call Comcast for a quick config over the wire and was up and running at 150 mbps.

No problems with gaming after a full week of use. With Comcast equipment it was several times an hour.

Cons: So far nothing to complain about.

1 out of 5 eggsGreat for 4 Months

This review is from: NETGEAR CM500-100NAS DOCSIS 3.0 High Speed Cable Modem - Certified for Comcast XFINITY, Time Warner Cable, Cox, Charter & More

Pros: It was nice for the first 4 months.

Cons: The modem lasted for just over 4 months - It suddenly stopped connecting to my service provider. After hours of trouble shooting I plugged my old modem back in and was connected to my service provider in minutes.

Other Thoughts: DO NOT PURCHASE!!!!!!!!!

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Phillip,

Thanks for bringing this to our attention-- we apologize that your CM500 stopped working suddenly after just 4 months. The good news is we can help! Please email us at netgearteam@netgear.com right away so we can help you under the hardware warranty. Make sure to include a copy and paste of this review and anything else that can speed things up on our end.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent

This review is from: NETGEAR CM500-100NAS DOCSIS 3.0 High Speed Cable Modem - Certified for Comcast XFINITY, Time Warner Cable, Cox, Charter & More

Pros: I replaced a modem from a different company with Netgear CM500. The other modem would break my downloaded files. Once I set up the CM500, I instantly was able to download all my files. Excellent.

Cons: Not a real con, but there is light for the connection that blinks. It's more of my OCD.

Other Thoughts: Newegg is awesome. Product is awesome.

1 out of 5 eggsNot working!

This review is from: NETGEAR CM500-100NAS DOCSIS 3.0 High Speed Cable Modem - Certified for Comcast XFINITY, Time Warner Cable, Cox, Charter & More

Pros: NONE

Cons: We moved to a new house, so I ordered it with the Netgear R7000 bundle for the new internet installation. When they came to setup my internet service, this modem just didn't work, so i had to buy a new modem from them to get our internet to work. Since it is free with the bundle, i can only ask for a replacement . A couple days ago, our internet got disconnected, so i call them to fix it, and try to activated with the new replacement modem, it wasn't working neither!

Other Thoughts: Jut don't buy it!

Manufacturer Response:

Hey Chenhui z.,

We want to apologize for the trouble and would like to investigate and also help. Email us at netgearteam@netgear.com whenever you get a chance for assistance. Include your CM500's serial number and a link to this review.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks, and is FAST and (so far) reliable

This review is from: NETGEAR CM500-100NAS DOCSIS 3.0 High Speed Cable Modem - Certified for Comcast XFINITY, Time Warner Cable, Cox, Charter & More

Pros: This was used to replace a Time Warner supplied modem/router/wireless combo which was OK, but at $8/mo for the modem part and $5/mo for the wireless part got waaaaaay too expensive at $156/year. TW started off by charging nothing, then $5/mo, then $8/mo, then $13/mo, all in the space of a year. Just greedy.

Using this modem plus an ASUS AC-1900 router gave me 20% better up/down speeds, and I haven't lost the connection with TW in the month it's been installed, where the old modem would go belly up then reconnect after a while once or twice a day.

Solid, reliable, fast, and pays for itself in less than a year. What more do you want from a cable modem?

Cons: Runs a bit warm, but I wouldn't say hot. In a decently ventilated area, though. No real cons so far.

Other Thoughts: Took less than 10 minutes for the TW CSR to ping the modem and send it the correct info to get things working. So far, very pleased, and will actually be saving money after the first year (see Pros). Netgear is a solid company, and I do like their products.

1 out of 5 eggsOverheating after 1 month of use

This review is from: NETGEAR CM500-100NAS DOCSIS 3.0 High Speed Cable Modem - Certified for Comcast XFINITY, Time Warner Cable, Cox, Charter & More

Pros: easy set up

Cons: overheating issue.
modem starts to malfunction in 1 month due to overheating
drops connection often and long.

Other Thoughts: modem is in open area yet still generates high heat
my home temp is typically high 60s~low 70s

searched internet and it seems overheating is a typical netgear issue

never going to buy another product from netgear.

Seriously, how do you not consider consumers keep their modem on 24/7 in year 2015?
otherwise this overheating issue does not explain.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Hak K.,

We are very sorry that you are noticing overheating with the CM500-- please email us right away so we can take a look and get everything working properly for you.
Email: netgearteam@netgear.com

Please use this email whenever you are having any issues! Just make sure to include the serial number of your unit and a description of the problem.

NETGEAR Team
