1 out of 5 eggsdesktop doesn't start

Pros: I followed the How to Install instruction step by step until step 8, inserted PCI card firmly into PCI card slot of my desktop PC and then turned ON, but the computer did not start after waiting for half hour. I tried both Windows 7 and Windows XP OS, the computer did not start. If I unpluged the PCI card, the computer can run normally. The mother board of my desktop is EVGA P55LE. I need help from Trendnet technical support.

Cons: none

1 out of 5 eggsDescription of this product is wrong

Pros: NA

Cons: This is not two ports PCI fax modem. This is only one RJ-11 PCI fax modem. The other port is just a bypass for you to connect your phone. It state to support windows 2003 but it is not. There is no driver for Windows 2003

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsNot too good

Pros: Not that expensive.

Cons: Terrible connect speeds. Gets 31.2 Kbps on a line where my previous modem got 45.3 Kbps.

You won't be getting the modem that's pictured for this item.

Other Thoughts: I bought two of these. Tried both drivers on the manufacturer's web site, and one from Windows Update. All produce similar results with awful connect speeds.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks...

Pros: It does what it needs to...

Cons: ...but nothing more. The software that comes packaged has absolutely no tools to edit a fax and send it back, making you have to save the fax as an image to your disk, open a photo editor, use a text box to enter edits, save it, then attach the edited image to an outgoing fax. The program should have the ability to do all this within itself.

1 out of 5 eggsDoesn't Work with Vista Home Premium

Pros: It's small and has fax software

Cons: It doesn't work with Vista Home Premium. I believe I read in Microsoft that the version of Vista does not support modem/fax cards but Vista Professional and higher versions does. The O/S doesn't recognize this TRENDnet modem card. In Device Manager doesn't show this card after the Vista driver is installed.

Other Thoughts: It seems Vista Home Premium only supports one or two modem brands and versions. Even after the correct, expensive modem as identified in the Hardware Compatibility list is installed with drivers native to Vista Home Premium, the O/S has no native software to use with the modem. Without circuit switched line service to use, MS still installs and runs telephony service, occupying and wasting memory, unless the presumably unsophisticated user might use telephony service in the packet switched network.

If you want to use a modem with your Vista Home Premium O/S you must purchase the correct US Robotics modem. I purchased a used USR card and discovered it came with no faxing software and thus needed to purchase the fax software at still more expense.

4 out of 5 eggsSound is available

Pros: I have had this modem in use since March of '06. It has worked just fine for me until it got hit by a lightning bolt through my phone line. Then it locked up in the "on" position.

Cons: It is software based, not hardware based, so it churns your CPU while it is in use.

Other Thoughts: I noticed that several purchasers have said that they cannot get any sound, stating that it is because there is no speaker. Well, this unit sends it's audio out to your case speaker. It may be that you do not have a case speaker, or that it is inoperative. Most motherboards will go "beep beep" when they come up. If your box does not make this sound, then most probably this card will be quiet.

3 out of 5 eggsA major pain to troubleshoot, because latest version doesn't have speaker as shown in photographs

Pros: (This is a long term use update from two previous, shorter term, more positive reviews.)

The modem worked great initially. It works fine when everything goes well.

Cons: The latest version of this modem when I purchased it (9/10/2009), was more recent than the version currently pictured in the product photographs. The version I received was the FM-PCIV92A vB1.1. There is NO SPEAKER on the version I received. You must install the driver before you even plug in the modem, for it to work properly. To get the best driver, you must download the driver from the website. To identify the correct driver to download, you must compare the model numbers and the version number pictures on their website with the modem you receive. Why in the world couldn't they simply assign new model numbers for each modem instead of wasting our time with these ridiculous version numbers?? I felt like I was looking at the back of a milk carton where there was a photograph of my modem, saying "Have you seen this modem?"

Other Thoughts: There is no speaker on the modem, which means that you cannot hear if it picks up and then hangs up because you are not getting a proper dialtone. On top of this, the error messages that come up in Windows Fax and Scan in Windows Vista SP2 32 bit when you don't get a proper dialtone, don't even SAY there is no dialtone. They say something completely unrelated and irrelevant. You cannot hear the modem dialing from inside your computer case, or hear the modem connecting from inside your computer case. GOOD LUCK TROUBLESHOOTING ANY PROBLEMS!!! One more pro, it's cheap. Then again, in this case, you get what you pay for! I was way beyond the return period for this modem before I found all this out. So it's just that much money down the toilet, in the long run. Needless to say, I ended up having to buy a good modem too. Now this modem is sitting in a box, and I can guarantee I'm not giving it to anyone I call a friend! I ONLY recommend this modem for very low budget techies.
