Pros: Once I had it authorized, a successful boot is about 90 seconds. If it's unsuccessful, it automatically reboots itself to fix the problem between it and my ISP. Definitely get to enjoy the 1 Gbps bandwidth via direct connect.

Cons: Do agree with one reviewer (I'm sorry for forgetting your name), however. It does get hot, especially in the area of the Link light.

Due to that, I stand it up vertically so it can get more air circulation. Maybe passive cooling will help it out....Hmmm...

Other Thoughts: Thanks for everyone's input. Helped me alot in trying to find a separate, DOCSIS 3.0-capable cable modem. Definitely ask your ISP before you buy your modem to ensure compatibility. I did that with my local Time Warner office (28314), and they gave me the green light before I bought it. Haven't had a problem in the 2 months I've owned it. Now, if I can only figure out how to do a dynamic 6to4 tunnel between it and my firewall...(hmmm........)

Pros: Solid 8x4 (that means 8 downstream channels by 4 upstream channels) modem that does exactly what it's supposed to do and nothing more. I first received one of these with Cox Communcations business-class service, and swapped out my older model, DPC3000 (4x4), because they wanted me to use the 3010. Totally worth every penny, this thing performs exactly as expected and delivers the speed you're subscribed to, and if there's available overhead at the CMTS (cable modem termination system), you're gonna pull extra most times (most providers soft-cap). With this modem and Cox's (then fastest) business class @ 50mbps, I was regularly pulling 60mbps down, and +5 over my upload, and my pings were so low it was like I was the only person in the area. Although some of that should be attributed to the fact that as business-class customer your traffic gets priority on the node (CMTS), but still. Stuck it in a closet with 0 airflow, and it never once got unbearably hot, only the coax connection really got hot. (To be expected, it's transmitting power after all!)

If you're getting your first modem for cable internet service, this is a fantastic modem and should be future proof for the next 2 years or longer depending on your provider's upgrade schedule. If you're getting 50mbps service or better and your modem can't handle it or is otherwise suffering, pick this up to replace it, you will not be sorry.

Cons: None that I can find.

Other Thoughts: Depending on the internet speed you're subscribing to, your carrier's support, and your budget, you may wish to look for something else, however, I can assure you, after using Cisco modems since putting my Terayon (yeah, stupid old, and I know I'm dating myself here) to rest, I've had nothing but success and everywhere else that I've been that hasn't had one, has always seemed to have some stupid issues with the cable. I will continue to support and purchase Cisco modems for my service wherever I can. Solid!

Pros: As the title says, this unit does its job. It hooks you up and gets you Internet access. It's an 8x4 DOCSIS 3 modem and so enough for even the fastest 'net packages you see in the US currently. If you have Cox's Ultimate tier, this is what you want. It can even be useful for slower connections because while your total bandwidth is capped, you'll have more channels available for use and thus be less likely to have the ones you are using saturated.

The ventilation slits seem adequate to the task of keeping it cool, which isn't always the case on these consumer grade units. So while it certainly feels warm, it isn't hot at all and you shouldn't have to worry about it dying from heat. Just make sure ti has room to vent.

I've had good luck with Scientific Atlanta/Cisco cable modems and this one is no exception.

Cons: None really. Would be nice to have a power switch if you need to reboot it, but that is rather minor.

Other Thoughts: No, this does not work on Comcast. Stop whining about that people. The DPC3008 is the one you want for Comcast. Before you order this, or any other cable or DSL modem CHECK WITH YOUR ISP. All ISPs will have guidance on what devices are compatible with their equipment. Different CMTS units work with different cable modems. If you bought something blindly and it didn't work, that's on you, not the unit.

Buying a separate modem like this is a good idea in my opinion, rather than buying one of the units that is a modem+router+wifi all in one. Those often have heat issues since they are packing too much in to a small box. Also you can't upgrade part of it without tossing the whole thing.

Pros: In comparison to others I have owned in the past, what really makes this model stand out is that it has never (not once), in the 2+ years I have owned it, ceased to function/dropped connection for even a few seconds.

Almost as important for someone who can be a bit of a Luddite when it comes to installing/setting up certain electronic peripherals, the setup was straightforward and took 2-3 minutes at most.

I was so satisfied with this model that when the first one I purchased fell victim to an extended series of brownouts/power surges (I neglected to plug it in to a surge protector), I purchased it again without even bothering to look for a newer replacement.

Cons: To an extent, was a bit expensive for home use.

Pros: I owned the DOCISS 2.0 version of this modem for many years before finally upgrading to this model. The only difference is the increased maximum bandwidth and easier to read front panel display. All you have to do is connect the coax cable, plug it in, wait for all the lights to turn solid, then plug your router WAN ethernet port to the modem's ethernet port, and bam, you have internet. I hope this model will last me the 5+ years my previous one did. Can't go wrong with Cisco!

Other Thoughts: If you do need to update the firmware there is a handy USB connector on the back but I would be supprised if you have to mess with it any time soon.
