1 out of 5 eggsdo not buy

Pros: doesn't weigh much?

Cons: Has to be reset several times a day. Do not buy this junk. Bought two and the first one wouldn't even start.

1 out of 5 eggsnot for ADSL

Pros: Its an ADSL modem

Cons: none, I only gave it one star hoping people would read this and not make the same stupid mistake I did.

Other Thoughts: This is for ADSL, most DSL today is VDSL, you can't get one for less than $99 I spent hours looking. so before you buy this make sure your DSL is ADSL. Don't get all excited like i did and overlook that detail

2 out of 5 eggsbad capacitors

Pros: Works well (with good caps), easy to install, no configuration necessary, works immediately with Verizon DSL.

Cons: Purchased May 21, 2012 here at Newegg. Received version 6. Less than 2 years later, performance become erratic, then completely unusable.

Defect is same as many modern electronic devices -- bad caps. 6 of the 7 caps were defective (most developed high ESR, low capacitance, and one went completely open). Replacing them fixed the modem.

Other Thoughts: I understand the need to keep manufacturing prices low, and I don't expect Nichicon or Panasonic caps for the low price of the product, but honestly they should use at least a decent respectable "middle-of-the-road" capacitor manufacturer.

The modem did fail during warranty (although close to end of the warranty), but repair was easier than dealing with TP-Link and the extended downtime. That probably makes TP-Link happy that they "got a free one" by not having to honor the warranty, but considering the poor quality caps that they used, I probably will no longer buy TP-Link, which means they lost a customer (and I buy a lot of high-tech products).

2 out of 5 eggsNot very good

Pros: works well when it works.

Cons: Mine stops working several times per week. It appears to be overheating. I shut it off for about an 30 minutes and it will run the rest of the day.

Other Thoughts: I don't know about TP other products but I wouldn't recommend this one.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Customer,

Thank you for your review.

An overheating issue isn't something that we commonly see with this device.

An indicator that may give some insight to the issue that you are experiencing may be the LEDs on the front of the device.

If the ADSL light isn't on, then it can indicate that your Modem isn't seeing any signal on the phone line from the ISP.

If the Internet light is off or flashing then this may indicate that there is a problem in the configuration of the Modem.

We do have a 24 hour technical support team that can help you trouble-shoot and resolve some of these problems.

If you have any questions or concerns then feel free to contact me directly at howard.he@tp-link.com.

Best Regards!

5 out of 5 eggsWorks as expected

Pros: Configured my router for the pppoe connection and it's up and running.

Cons: I guess if you want to get nit picky it's a little light so if a cord gets tugged it moves a little from exactly where I want it on the shelf?

Other Thoughts: I have very slow rural DSL from AT&T. Wasn't about to spend $90 for one of their modems. No complaints on this one. Does what it says, nothing more, nothing less.

1 out of 5 eggsNever buy from TP-LINK

Pros: It worked for a short time.

Cons: One would think an ADSL modem would be a simple enough device to produce. It slowed down and dropped service randomly, and died completely after less than 5 months. It was out of Newegg's pittance 1-month warranty, so I had to talk to the manufacturer to honor their 2-year warranty. Emailing TP-LINK USA is the only option, even though it routes to someone in China. They couldn't understand my problems in plain English, and take several days to get back the simplest of responses. When I finally got someone from the States, they required that I return the item via UPS but won't pay the shipping which is a third of the price of this junk device. TP-LINK is a worthless brand.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Customer,

We are sorry to see that this device didn't work out for you.

If you ever need help from local support then you can feel free to contact me directly at howard.he@tp-link.com.

We do have our 2 year manufacture warranty to replace this device if you need to.

You can always contact me directly for an RMA too if you ever want to go that route.

3 out of 5 eggsYou need to terminate PPP

Pros: Cheap
It's not a router/firewall/DHCP server etc.

Cons: Interface is slow and quite limited.

Other Thoughts: You have to terminate PPP on another device, with CenturyLink. This makes it difficult to see traffic between this device and a router as it's all PPP encapsulated between the two. The description of the product doesn't make that clear.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Works only as a bridge (could be good or bad). Comes with a DSL filter.

Cons: First one was bad, second one worked. No problem with neweggs return policy, but I had to use our old modem while we waited.

Other Thoughts: First one I had only worked for about an hour then would drop out. Tried an old actiontec modem on the same DSL line and it worked fine. Returned it for another one that seems good so far.
