The era of the brain controlled gaming is still very far away, but from this day on, your thoughts will be changed. OCZ has produced the Neural Impulse Actuator (nia) after several years’ hard working which marks a new era in gaming. The nia is an unprecedented peripheral to be used in conjunction with your mouse for a more immersive gaming experience.

There are a number of sensors that installed in the headband to read your brain wave signal, and convert them into control signals. OCZ has turns the previous RS-232 serial port connection into the more common USB interface, and uses DirectX API for multi-threaded importation of commands. DirectX has faster data transfer speed than other means; the new version of the software can also support multi-core processors and have faster processing speed to transform brain waves from the PC to the computing tasks.

Working with the nia’s calibration program, the Actuator captures a variety of signals, such as facial muscle movement, eye movement, brain Alpha waves and Beta waves to control the game. So you can launch the desired behavior and shoot with the "blink of an eye", without lifting a finger.

  • newegg Play Games Using Biosignals This OCZ nia translate your body electrical biosignals into computer commands and you will get immersed into the game playing. You can also customize behavioral profiles of your character and do it by your subconsciousness.
  • newegg Hone Your Reflexes While others have to practice reaction times, you needn’t! You can just use reflex-based game play to get the better of your opponents by cutting half of your reaction time.
  • newegg Use Space-Age Technology By the use of carbon nanofiber-based sensors, the headband provide the highest possible dynamic range for the recording of bioelectrical signals that are amplified and digitized and further de-convoluted into computer commands.
  • newegg USB Connectivity The OCZ nia features a USB connector for great compatibility and plug-and-play convenience.

Features

Features
OCZ's Neural Impulse Actuator (nia) marks a new era in gaming. Rather than being a substitute for a mouse, the nia is a pioneering new peripheral to be used in conjunction with your mouse for a more immersive gaming experience. The nia is compatible with any PC game using keyboard input… past, present, or future. Predefined profiles included with the software allow the gamer to develop their own nia—memory to launch the desired behavior of their character and shoot with the "blink of an eye", without lifting a finger.

Play Games Using Biosignals
Translate electrical biosignals of your body directly into computer commands and take advantage of total immersion into game play. Customize behavioral profiles of your character and let your subconsciousness take over.

Hone Your Reflexes
Where others have to practice reaction times, you can use reflex-based game play to get the better of your opponents by cutting your reaction time by 50%.

Use Space-Age Technology
The headband uses carbon nanofiber-based sensors to provide the highest possible dynamic range for the recording of bioelectrical signals that are amplified and digitized and further de-convoluted into computer commands.

Become Your Character
Streaming biopotentials into the computer and witnessing real-time feedback through the game will result in a novel way to experience virtual reality. Enter a virtual world where abstractions like keyboard commands are replaced by intentions converted into tensions and translated into command structures.

5 out of 5 eggsWant it!!

Pros: I really want this, someone should sell theirs to me.

Cons: I can't seem to find one for sale under $100

3 out of 5 eggsDo not have BUT...

Pros: If works would as stated, completely awesome.

Cons: Reviews tell me it is iffy at best

Other Thoughts: I really wish there was a way to see if some of the people that bought and put in their closet could offer to others (me?) to let buy to try. Obviously at a discount since used and they gave away it isn't all that is claimed... sorry all.

2 out of 5 eggsRisky Buy

Pros: Works semi good

Cons: Becomes pretty much useless over time.

Other Thoughts: I eventually just unhooked it and put it in my closet. Just eventually loses its fun

3 out of 5 eggsCould have been decent

Pros: With refinement the technology has potential.

Cons: I tried to use this for a couple of days. Basically I guess I'm too electrical because I had to ground myself just to get "brainfingers" to go into an acceptable range.
As to why they didn't have a grounding cable built in, is beyond my understanding. If you try too hard you will get a headache lol. It's collecting dust in my closet.

Like others have said it's very hard to keep your concentration while playing fps and your brain level activities will change while you are playing. It did not have a way to compensate for that on the fly in the software.

Other Thoughts: Have a grounding wire built into your device. Include some games other than pong.

Fix your software. Make it auto-adjust for changes in your brain activity.

1 out of 5 eggsWaste of time and money

Pros: Fun gadget and interesting concept.

Cons: Practically useless. Even with the months of training some users claim is required, it will never replace the speed or consistency of a mouse and keyboard. Months of training to do something 3 times as slow as something you can already do. A waste of time and money

Other Thoughts: Why can't it use some sort of recording/learning program to customize to your specific brainwaves? Why can't you put this thing on and drive a car on the screen using the keyboard and the software would remember what happens in your brain when you turn left using the keyboard?

5 out of 5 eggsDO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT

Pros: - Very fun to show to your friends
- An alternative to using your pointer finger to click
- Lots of potential

Cons: I consider myself to be quite astute and observant enough to catch on to learning curves of things that take lots of dexterity to master quicker than most (i.e. archery, ping pong, skateboarding, surfing). This device does not share the same learning principles that you are trying to master with your mouse (which is has dexterity mastery). Since this device does not play on the hand eye coordination that gamers are currently familiar with, it will take months and months of practice and frustration to get the same results that a keyboard and mouse produce, which I am not even sure that the NIA can even produce.

Other Thoughts: !!!THE REASON I GAVE IT 5 STARS!!!

The reason I gave the NIA 5-stars was to give credit to its ingenuity that this product beholds. It is an incredible step in an abnormal direction. It is not a poorly made product besides its grounding problem

This product is best for people with more money than sense. I had to buy it because I was convinced that it would do what people had already said it cannot do. Let my review be another example why not to buy this product just yet... since it is in its infancy stages, people like myself need to be able to use it and say that it is not a useful gaming device.

I will be getting a refund on this product because I do not have enough experience with programming to develop this product further. I also have no use for this product besides this review that will hopefully guide you, the potential buyer of the NIA, to make an informed decision on whether or not to buy this product.

1 out of 5 eggsNot For Everyone

Pros: I was not able to find any

Cons: The product has a serious EMI problem making it very difficult to work with and prevented me from getting any real results from my testing. This pretty much makes it unusable for a typical user, who would expect out-of-the-box usability. Expect to spend hours sitting in front of your computer trying to figure out just how to use this device.

Other Thoughts: It is no replacement for a good gaming mouse and for the price you could get 2 razor diamond back mice. Maybe if the product was not cased in metal it would not be as susceptible to EMI.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you

5 out of 5 eggsI Do Not Own This

Pros: Wow! I have read reviews and the specifications for this device and I'm simply delightfully surprised. I do not own this product, nor plan to ever buy one but bear with me please.

Cons: N/A

Other Thoughts: Imagine the implications! This device reads the brain's orders to move muscles. For people with ALS, or less severe disabilities this can be an epic breakthrough in medical science! Call me a dreamer, but if we can create a sort of "robo-suit" to interface with this device we can make disabled people move fluently once again.

5 out of 5 eggsBest thing I've ever bought

Pros: The software starts working right away and instantly works as a game controller! It picks up my brain signals extremely well and it can detect the slightest movement in my face or eyes. I love this thing. It does take practice, but thats expected. I've mastered the alpha1 wave, and I've almost mastered the alpha 2. I love to play pong with my eyes and muscles! This thing rocks!!

Cons: The Beta waves are hard to master, and it does take a lot of practice to get control on each brain wave type.
