Saitek Pro Flight X-55 Rhino H.O.T.A.S. (Hands on Throttle and Stick) System for PC

Saitek Pro Flight

Military-Grade Flight Sim Precision

Inspired by controls found within actual fighter planes, the next-gen X-55 Rhino H.O.T.A.S. System for PC provides utmost control over simulated aircraft. Built to the same exacting standards of Saitek's award-winning Pro Flight accessories range, the X-55 Rhino delivers a multitude of customizable options never before seen in an H.O.T.A.S. System. Whether flying a modern fighter, single- or multi-engine aircraft, or even a retro single-seat plane, the X-55 Rhino supplies all the control surface options required to achieve the exact level of aerial performance aspiring pilots demand.

Saitek Pro Flight

Enhanced Stick Accuracy

During virtual flight – just like true flight – the accuracy of an aircraft's control surfaces is of paramount importance. The X-55 Rhino's control surfaces are incredibly accurate, courtesy of an all-new 16-bit aileron and a 16-bit elevator axis, each employing hall-effect sensors. Developed from the ground up, Saitek's 16-bit axis solution enables extremely precise flight.

Adjustable Stick Force via Advanced Four-Spring System

A ground-breaking, adjustable stick-spring system allows pilots to alter the force required to move the stick. Four springs of varying resistance are included to provide a total of five different options. Choose the spring – or no spring at all – which best accommodates your style of flying.

Saitek Pro Flight

Twin Throttles with Friction Adjuster and Throttle Lock

Using a twin-engine throttle controller is the only suitable method for manipulating a virtual twin-engine aircraft. The X-55 Rhino boasts twin throttles – ideal for situations in which your primary engine is disabled and you're down to one – and also provides the option to adjust the friction required to move them. And if your aircraft of choice is single-engine, a handy throttle lock effectively converts the twin throttles into a single unit.

Saitek Pro Flight

Bonus Toggles and Rotaries on Backlit Throttle Base

Flight sim accessories used by today's virtual pilots require the highest level of control and customization. The X-55 Rhino showcases additional toggles and rotaries, not based on any particular aircraft, around the throttle base. Seven extra three-way toggle switches and two rotaries allow you to customize this H.O.T.A.S. System to your own specifications.

Individual USB Connectors

The X-55 Rhino's stick and throttle units each utilize their own separate USB connection, offering greater flexibility during customization. You're free to situate the controls exactly where you want them, without the need to keep them tethered to each other.

Saitek Pro Flight

H.O.T.A.S. Configuration Software Enables Programmable Controls

Saitek's new software provides the ability to completely customize all of the X-55 Rhino's axes and buttons. On the axis side, you can adjust deadbands and response curves to fine-tune axes to respond just like an aircraft's real-life counterparts. On the buttons and toggle side, you can assign any number of in-sim directives, such as speed brake, flares, target lock and pickle weapon. The software also allows programmability for an array of mouse and keyboard commands – from basic single-key inputs to very advanced, timed, and macro commands.

Build the Ultimate Virtual Cockpit

Transform even a modest PC into a virtual cockpit and experience the staggering realism of different flight and emergency situations – complete with realistic weather and flight conditions. Using the X-55 Rhino as a foundation for Saitek's modular accessories, easily add Combat Rudder Pedals and a multitude of Switch, Navigation, and Instrument Panels to fully customize your flight simulator. Commercial or private, seasoned or novice, you have the ability to equip your flight simulation setup with all the essentials needed to vastly improve your skill set and muscle memory.

5 out of 5 eggslove it!

Pros: Feels solid even though its plastic.
Lots of buttons.

Cons: The throttle actually has two separate throttles that lock together to make the one big one. I guess its for if you play a game with twin engine aircraft. The throttle lock works by extending into both sticks. The problem is that it is not long enough so there is a little wobble when you are using the two sticks as one throttle (which is what 99% of people will do 99% of the time). Its not really that noticeable but is really the only low quality part I can see on the whole setup so I figured I would mention it.

Other Thoughts: I was a little nervous about the price but I figured I'm going to be playing Elite, Star Citizen, and No Man's Sky so a good joystick setup is a must. Unless the thing breaks or wears down quickly I am really satisfied with the purchase.

5 out of 5 eggsx55 Rhino

Pros: Great purchase. Bought this to play Elite Dangerous to get prepared for Star Citizen and this is my first joystick. Has worked flawlessly for the last few days (got about 20hrs use).

All buttons work, Joystick slides around smooth, very little dead zone. Throttle works fantastically.

Cons: -Joystick is pretty large and base seems light on the joystick/throttle.
-Plastic

Other Thoughts: For the Price this is is a fantastic mid range HOTAS. One of the best throttles on the market.

4 out of 5 eggsSolid with a few quarks.

Pros: The construction is pretty good despite it mostly being made of plastic. Solid throttle and stick, the weight is just enough to hold it in place. Like other reviews the stick does have a bit of a hard spot in the middle but a lighter springs can resolve that.

Cons: The software is just junk, don't bother installing it. Do NOT plug the USB's into a USB hub unless it's powered. You'll have all kinds of ghost button triggers on the throttle. It's just best to plug both throttle and stick into the back of your PC. With Elite Dangerous you can install the drives and your good to go.

Other Thoughts: Over all it's a good stick but Saitek's software needs some serious work.

3 out of 5 eggsPretty good, but could be better.

Pros: Feature rich, the software allows for a lot of customization. Loads of buttons - you should never run out. Green backlights are nice. Easy to adjust the feel of the joystick and throttle. The grip areas have a nice feel to them. Not sure if it's something that is sprayed on the plastic or the way the plastic was molded, but either way, it's nice.

Drivers/software are not included in the box, they're obtained from the website. I kind of like this, as it ensures everyone is using the most up-to-date drivers/software.

Cons: Oh jeez, where do I start. Don't get me wrong, I'm still exceptionally pleased with what I got, but the price tag is outrageous considering what you get.

1. Absolutely no documentation whatsoever. I had to go to Youtube to figure out how to change the spring because I was afraid I was going to break it. I had to go to Youtube to figure out how to run the software (it only places a link on your desktop - nothing in the Taskbar or the start menu). I had to go to Youtube to figure out how to customize the joystick. The software itself is nice, but, yeah, no documentation.

2. The hats are all loose and wobbly. I don't really think it's a structural flaw or anything, or indicative of weakness, but for what I paid, I'd have liked something that feels a bit more solid.

3. Toggles on the throttle are not toggles, they are momentary switches like the ones on the bottom. Not a big deal but I really would have liked the feel of a toggle switch.

4. This really needs to be advertised as requiring a powered USB hub. Ghosted terribly in Elite: Dangerous to the point where it was unplayable.

5. Ergonomics are not the best. I have pretty big hands and it's still a bit of a stretch for me to reach the grey hat (the only one I really use, thankfully). If I had to use the other two hats on the joystick it would be a lot more of a pain. You do have move your entire hand up from the rest position to reach the hats. Not a big deal, TBH, but I could see how it might be an issue in some games where the hats are used "on-the-fly."

Other Thoughts: It's a decent joystick/throttle combination, but it's definitely not worth the price. Unfortunately there's really not much, if any competition in this price range with a similar level of features, so this is what we're stuck with. It's good quality, just not the kind you'd expect with the price tag attached to it.

Four stars off the bat for not being pleasantly surprised by what I got. One star knocked off for the price/quality disparity. Another star knocked off for the combination of other general issues I listed.

I gave it one star back because despite all this, it's still a decent product of acceptable quality, and you'll have a lot of fun with it. With a better price tag this could have been a four or even five star review. You just expect a lot more for this kind of price.

4 out of 5 eggsX-55 Rhino H.O.T.A.S

Pros: -Overall fantastic stick and throttle. Never had close to as many buttons and switches at my disposal
-Made of plastic but overall sturdy build. The tension springs are a nice touch, and the resistance on the throttle is beyond satisfying.
-The look of it is jaw dropping in my opinion, especially with all of the LEDs on it.

Cons: The throttle seems to have an issue with power draw which causes ghost button presses. For example, in Elite: Dangerous, I could be flying around minding my own business when out of nowhere half of the functions on my ship engage. Cargo hatch opens, ship shifts into reverse etc. which is extremely irritating and immersion breaking. The only fix from what I've read seems to be buying an external powered USB hub. There doesn't seem to be a difference between USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports, and I have a power supply more than large enough to handle it, but from what I've read more issues are seen on AMD builds than Intel. This doesn't bother me much as I only have to wait 4 days for a 15$ powered USB Hub.

4 out of 5 eggsPhantom/Ghost Button Presses

Pros: I will say it is satisfying flying around and coming from a Logitech Extreme 3D to this HOTAS system. I found both the stick and throttle to be very responsive. There are around 28 different buttons/hat positions on the Throttle alone. Being able to swap the stick springs out to have a tension that is best for you is helpful if the stick feels too wobbly or if you prefer it to be wobbly.

Cons: You need a powered USB hub for this HOTAS if you have phantom/ghost buttons presses.
I'm mainly using this in Elite: Dangerous. The only issue I have had with it was Phantom Button presses on the throttle. It happened the first night I started to use setup. I ignored it at first because it only happened once or twice. The next day it was happening quite frequently and constantly issuing commands/functions that were not particularly helpful.
After some reading I put the stick and throttle on a separate USB powered hub (Dynex 7 port hub) and all of the ghosting problems went away. I played through 2 five hour sessions and I didn't experience any ghosting at all. So if you having this problem, see if you can borrow a powered HUB and if it solves your problem keep that one and buy a replacement for your friend.
I also turned the LED's off on the throttle and stick to help with power consumption.

Other Thoughts: Needs extra hardware, Mad Cats/Saitek should include that in the box.

2 out of 5 eggsCustomer support is horrible

Pros: Throttle is great. Mine didn't have any of the tension issues that many were reporting. It's the only reason I'm giving 2 stars.

Cons: The stick, even with the biggest spring is still pretty loose. I much prefer the stiffness and accuracy I have with both of my Thrustmaster T16000M sticks.

Other Thoughts: My stick, after a couple of months of light use started showing signs wobble on the X axis. I contacted Mad Catz support and a couple of days later they said to send it in for repair. I sent it off a few days later and tracked when they received it. I gave them a few days and asked for a status update - no reply. Couple of days later I asked again - still no reply. The next day a new stick is sitting on my front porch. Excited to have it back, I unboxed it and found that not only was it not fixed, but the refurbished stick they sent me had more wobble on the X axis AND on the Y axis. It was far worse than the one I'd sent in. I've emailed them and updated my ticket with requests for them to contact me and after 10 days I have heard a word from them. Never buying Saitek/Mad Catz gear again.

5 out of 5 eggsLove it

Pros: Smooth throttle and stick, lots of buttons. I LOVE the throttle.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: I ordered from Newegg, was due on Monday, but arrived on Friday. Excellent! I had been using an X52 that was 5 years old, and starting to wear out. In spite of some of the not so favorable reviews, I decided to give it a go. I love it...I am having to get used to the new button placements, but that is just a matter of time. Everything works great, no issues at all so far. At the received setting, the throttle was stiff, but I reset to the lowest setting and it is great. I also replaced the spring for the lightest one. Thatis a very welcomed feature. I use it for Battleground Europe, and mapped the buttons from the in-game profiler. No problems. I would buy again.

5 out of 5 eggsZero buyer remorse. Get one.

Pros: lots of buttons. a definite improvement over the x52. More than enough buttons for elite dangerous. better control layout than the x52. looks super cool on you desk.

Cons: none. some people on you tube rant over the layout of the buttons or the feel of grip, or how it doesn't come off center. What ever guys. I don't have any issues the this stick.

Other Thoughts: I have a tendency to look at about a million reviews before buying something and the negatives where very negative on this stick. I don't understand the fuss, This stick is pretty awesome. If you are comparing it to something that is 500 bucks, then get out of here, that is not a valid comparison.

2 out of 5 eggsDont waste your time

Pros: great stick, loved the feel and placement of the axis, buttons and switches

Cons: First day noticed couple buttons weren't functioning, ok no problem lots of other buttons, then a day later the trigger stopped working hardly even used and it had already broke

Other Thoughts: Loved the stick sad i had to return it, if the parts wasnt so cheap on them and had more durability i would highly recomend this stick seeing it didnt dont waste your time and money
