Saitek Pro Flight X-55 Rhino H.O.T.A.S. (Hands on Throttle and Stick) System for PC

Saitek Pro Flight

Military-Grade Flight Sim Precision

Inspired by controls found within actual fighter planes, the next-gen X-55 Rhino H.O.T.A.S. System for PC provides utmost control over simulated aircraft. Built to the same exacting standards of Saitek's award-winning Pro Flight accessories range, the X-55 Rhino delivers a multitude of customizable options never before seen in an H.O.T.A.S. System. Whether flying a modern fighter, single- or multi-engine aircraft, or even a retro single-seat plane, the X-55 Rhino supplies all the control surface options required to achieve the exact level of aerial performance aspiring pilots demand.

Saitek Pro Flight

Enhanced Stick Accuracy

During virtual flight – just like true flight – the accuracy of an aircraft's control surfaces is of paramount importance. The X-55 Rhino's control surfaces are incredibly accurate, courtesy of an all-new 16-bit aileron and a 16-bit elevator axis, each employing hall-effect sensors. Developed from the ground up, Saitek's 16-bit axis solution enables extremely precise flight.

Adjustable Stick Force via Advanced Four-Spring System

A ground-breaking, adjustable stick-spring system allows pilots to alter the force required to move the stick. Four springs of varying resistance are included to provide a total of five different options. Choose the spring – or no spring at all – which best accommodates your style of flying.

Saitek Pro Flight

Twin Throttles with Friction Adjuster and Throttle Lock

Using a twin-engine throttle controller is the only suitable method for manipulating a virtual twin-engine aircraft. The X-55 Rhino boasts twin throttles – ideal for situations in which your primary engine is disabled and you're down to one – and also provides the option to adjust the friction required to move them. And if your aircraft of choice is single-engine, a handy throttle lock effectively converts the twin throttles into a single unit.

Saitek Pro Flight

Bonus Toggles and Rotaries on Backlit Throttle Base

Flight sim accessories used by today's virtual pilots require the highest level of control and customization. The X-55 Rhino showcases additional toggles and rotaries, not based on any particular aircraft, around the throttle base. Seven extra three-way toggle switches and two rotaries allow you to customize this H.O.T.A.S. System to your own specifications.

Individual USB Connectors

The X-55 Rhino's stick and throttle units each utilize their own separate USB connection, offering greater flexibility during customization. You're free to situate the controls exactly where you want them, without the need to keep them tethered to each other.

Saitek Pro Flight

H.O.T.A.S. Configuration Software Enables Programmable Controls

Saitek's new software provides the ability to completely customize all of the X-55 Rhino's axes and buttons. On the axis side, you can adjust deadbands and response curves to fine-tune axes to respond just like an aircraft's real-life counterparts. On the buttons and toggle side, you can assign any number of in-sim directives, such as speed brake, flares, target lock and pickle weapon. The software also allows programmability for an array of mouse and keyboard commands – from basic single-key inputs to very advanced, timed, and macro commands.

Build the Ultimate Virtual Cockpit

Transform even a modest PC into a virtual cockpit and experience the staggering realism of different flight and emergency situations – complete with realistic weather and flight conditions. Using the X-55 Rhino as a foundation for Saitek's modular accessories, easily add Combat Rudder Pedals and a multitude of Switch, Navigation, and Instrument Panels to fully customize your flight simulator. Commercial or private, seasoned or novice, you have the ability to equip your flight simulation setup with all the essentials needed to vastly improve your skill set and muscle memory.

5 out of 5 eggsLove it

Pros: Smooth throttle and stick, lots of buttons. I LOVE the throttle.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: I ordered from Newegg, was due on Monday, but arrived on Friday. Excellent! I had been using an X52 that was 5 years old, and starting to wear out. In spite of some of the not so favorable reviews, I decided to give it a go. I love it...I am having to get used to the new button placements, but that is just a matter of time. Everything works great, no issues at all so far. At the received setting, the throttle was stiff, but I reset to the lowest setting and it is great. I also replaced the spring for the lightest one. Thatis a very welcomed feature. I use it for Battleground Europe, and mapped the buttons from the in-game profiler. No problems. I would buy again.

5 out of 5 eggsZero buyer remorse. Get one.

Pros: lots of buttons. a definite improvement over the x52. More than enough buttons for elite dangerous. better control layout than the x52. looks super cool on you desk.

Cons: none. some people on you tube rant over the layout of the buttons or the feel of grip, or how it doesn't come off center. What ever guys. I don't have any issues the this stick.

Other Thoughts: I have a tendency to look at about a million reviews before buying something and the negatives where very negative on this stick. I don't understand the fuss, This stick is pretty awesome. If you are comparing it to something that is 500 bucks, then get out of here, that is not a valid comparison.

2 out of 5 eggsDont waste your time

Pros: great stick, loved the feel and placement of the axis, buttons and switches

Cons: First day noticed couple buttons weren't functioning, ok no problem lots of other buttons, then a day later the trigger stopped working hardly even used and it had already broke

Other Thoughts: Loved the stick sad i had to return it, if the parts wasnt so cheap on them and had more durability i would highly recomend this stick seeing it didnt dont waste your time and money

2 out of 5 eggsNot a $200 Product

Pros: Plenty of buttons for multiple configurations. Being able to change the spring on the joystick or remove it completely is a nice touch.

Cons: The software is practically worthless. I've had to install the drivers multiple times to get them to work. The H.U.D. software has fully worked yet. I can program buttons just fine but I can't on calibrate either the stick or the throttle. Right now I can't calibrate the stick at all. It acts like its not even plugged in on the settings window but I can program buttons all day long. I've installed and uninstalled the software multiple times.

Other Thoughts: I have the x-55 and a $30 Pacific AV8R and I can't tell the difference in the build quality of the two. I picked up the AV8R to use as a left hand joystick to control thrusters in space sims with 6DOF. Either its pretty good quality for a $30 stick or x-55 is just a rip off. I would say its not really worth more than $100. Madcatz is just taking advantage of the fact that there is not another dual throttle h.o.t.a.s. except the really expensive Thrustmaster Warthog.

1 out of 5 eggsOld Review isn't accurate

Pros: It is easy to setup and configure; lots of switches and buttons to use as you see fit. The software you can download to configure it isn't the best but works well enough to let you do what you need to.

It feels sturdy enough.

Cons: Support for the product.

Ok so the rudder control (twist) went flaky on the joystick after a couple months. That's annoying but you'll hit a bad item here or there.

What troubles me were checking, I found more than a dozen other such complaints with no resolutions -- all in the same time window when I purchased my unit. It appears there was a "bad batch" with similar issues yet the manufacturer won't get back to their customers.

This is not good when so many similar problems show up at the same time and they ignore all those having the problem.

Other Thoughts: I'm not amused at all. If something goes wrong like this, they should work with the customers but they don't seem interested in it.

I really wish I could delete my previous review.

4 out of 5 eggsPleasantly surprised

Pros: Plethora of buttons, good range of motion, smooth motion on the joystick and the overall build quality feels strong

Cons: The software is a little bit sub-par, and of no fault to the joystick some games (Battlefield 4) do not support "dual controllers" which means it can be annoying to get this to work properly. I have heard other people did I have not invested the time to thoroughly attempt.

The sliding of the throttle was incredibly stiff out of the box, I have done some research and it seems to be the grease compound they use. All I had to do was play with the throttle some and it has loosened up. It is still tight when I very first try to move it however I am confident this will clear in time.

I wish there was more weight to these. they are fairly light for as large as they are.

One other thing that annoys me is the plastic on the top of the throttle does not smoothly join so there is a slight lip.

Other Thoughts: Now, I know I named off a lot of bad things and still gave a 4 star and that is because using this feels phenomenal. Yes it's big and it's hard to move the throttle at first but really there are no glaringly bad faults. For this price point this is terrific though I do think that I'll be adding a steel plate to the bottom via the mounting brackets just to add some weight and I think this will be perfect and last me for a while to come. I would have no issues recommending this to someone.

2 out of 5 eggsNot Your Fathers Saitek Product

Pros: Nice design for a HOTAS. Has exactly what you need for playing everything from FSX to Elite Dangerous, and at what appears to be a great price. It looks great, the layout is not horrible for smaller hands, feels pretty good while playing. Unless you are one of the lucky few to get a trouble free X55, the pros ends here.

Cons: This review is more about the X55 quality and customer support from Mad Catz, I saw all the bad reviews, and thouoght I would be the lucky one to get a good X55, did not happen. I had an X52 ( PRE Mad Catz) which worked great for years, and never had an issue. The X55, not so much. I am not going to bore anyone with everything that is lacking or that did not work, the majority of reviews everywhere cover that. After many attempts at getting a response from Mad Catz, and 3 X55 units later, I gave it up, returned the last one and bought the Thrustmaster Warthog. If you get a good one, I am happy for you, and you will love it. Did I expect Thrustmaster quality from a $250 cheaper product, no. But for $200 I did expect it to work. If a product continues to have issues, they seem to never be addressed, you begin to see a pattern in quality, and customers are going to get tired of it. If you need a HOTAS, and cannot swing the extra for the Warthog, wait until you can, buy something else, but stay away from the X55 until it becomes more reliable and customer service improves.

Other Thoughts: Quality and reliability come at a price. The lack of quality and reliability eventually comes at a higher one.

3 out of 5 eggsNice stick, not perfect, but not terrible.

Pros: Excellent Response, Accurate. Calibration software very good for defining custom response curves. Once working its a thing of beauty. The removable stick and variable springs help to give a good feedback FEEL for the types of flying you intend to do or the type of surface you want to use the stick on.

Cons: First gripe - Ghosting. Always use a powered hub if your cables can't directly reach the computer's USB port. Even then, there is the occasional ghost trigger (in Star Citizen's Arena Commander, I've had random eject triggers while dogfighting). Terrible ghosting when your hub doesn't have juice. With a properly powered hub and USB 3.0, I have had about two incidents of ghost out of about 40 hours flight. Direct connect without the hub, I get an incident every 2 hours. With an unpowered hub or a cable extension, you might as well forget it - it happens every 30 sec. Your craft simply isn't going to do what you want it to do.
Second - Calibration Software -- Its one of the most unintuitive pieces of software I've ever worked through. This is a piece of software that takes hours, perhaps even days worth of tinkering to get things "right". Recommend reading up how to set things, where analog makes vastly more sense, assigning the proper curves (there are two types of curves).... And I have yet to manage to get the mouse pip to respond like a mouse, at least as far as SC-AC is concerned - which is really a drag because that would make the HOTAS truly a HOTAS.
Also, you may have to regularly recalibrate - especially if you have ghosting issues. The method should be if you change your connection (direct or powered hub) or mess with the stick's springs, recalibrate. If you use the device with more than one computer, recalibrate EVERY time you switch. It stores calibration settings in the HOTAS and on the computer.
Finally - Z-rotation axis sucks. I may have to get a pair of rudder pedals because of it.... I'm going to try different rotation curves, but right now its sluggish for me, and it sometimes feels like I'm breaking the stick or trying to slew a battleship.

Other Thoughts: The removable stick holds such promise, especially for those with different hand sizes and different grip requirements. That said, I've not seen anything about plans to release a new stick component for the system. If they could at least create a couple different sized sticks with different layouts, (or better quality materials) it would make this stick worth its weight in gold. Also, if you're having difficulty with the stick side and ghosting, try re-seating the stick on the base and make sure the contacts are clean and clear of contaminates. I managed to get a dog-hair under my stick while changing springs. It made me have horrible thoughts until I resat the stick and made sure the area was clear.

3 out of 5 eggsNothing to do with being OCD

Pros: I have owned this HOTAS for about 4 months now.. Let me clarify, Im on my 3rd one in 4 months. So the third time is a charm? Yes so far so good. IF you get a fully working one, its very decent for the money considering there is noting between $200 and $400. The next step up being a Warthog which after receiving my second bunk X-55 I just about splurged for.

I play War Thunder, Star Citizen AC, Mechwarrior etc.. All of which work well with this setup. I do like the ability to change between 4 included springs or running no spring at all for Helicopter flight. The LED's make it easy to see in the dark and the overall ergo if the Throttle is very good and has adjustable tension. Obviously plenty of hats and programmable buttons for even the hard core sim player. Software is ,, ok.

Cons: Again, given you get a fully functional one there are still a couple cons depending on your hand size etc..
If you have medium-smaller hands, I would consider a different flight system. The throttle is fine but the flight stick is quite large and with my palm rested on the lower plaform (how its actually supposed to be) I have a very hard time reaching the thumb hats and the red "A" button at the very top of the flight stick. I wear a Large sized motorcycle glove so I do not have small hands. I have to contort my hand off the pinky button to reach them and that is simply not intuitive. Other places on the Web are full of reviews about this very subject. Also one other con worth mentioning is the thin and lite weight plastic used on the flight stick. If I grip it even moderately tight I can feel the plastic flexing and creaking. I have tried tightening the screws to no avail.

Other Thoughts: So, I got 2 bad ones at first. Both had non functional buttons right out of the box. To a previous reviewer.. That is not OCD its called unacceptable quality control. If I pay $200 for anything it better be worth every penny..Period.

Having said that, this third one has been fine so far aside from a few squeaks and creaks which are fixable to a degree. And yes at $200 a HOTAS with these features is about the best you're going to do.. So I say, buy at your own risk and good luck getting a good one :)
