2 out of 5 eggsA poor-quality, budget-priced webcam with poor software

This review is from: Logitech C170 Webcam - 0.3 Megapixel - USB 2.0

Pros: + It's affordable, easy to install, and tilts up and down.

Cons: - The image sensor is low quality: every photo it takes is grainy, many pixels are the wrong color, and photos are missing detail and look damaged. (I have to work my Photoshop magic to correct all the issues, but it takes many hours per photo, and most people either won't have the skill to do that, or just won't want to bother.)

- The LWS software does not work on half of the Windows PCs. If you get it to work, it's easy to use and will let you tap into all of the webcam's basic features. If not, you will need to work around the issue by using third-party photo capture and videochat software. You will also not be able to use all of the webcam's basic features, like pan and zoom.

- The warranty is only 2 years.

Other Thoughts: It may only be $20, but don't let the low price fool you. This is a poor webcam that will ruin all of your precious photos and videos. You can never take the same photo or video twice, so it's important that you buy the best webcam you can so all your photos and videos will be in HD and look their best.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great

This review is from: Logitech C170 Webcam - 0.3 Megapixel - USB 2.0

Pros: These work great!

First there is next to no installation if you have Windows 7 or above.
No need for a install CD, just plug them in and Windows will optionally update them automatically. ZERO bloatware (a problem in the past with Logitech et al).

They have a well designed, simple, universal mount that has so far worked great on various sized monitors from the thin to the few inches thick.

It's very light weight, unobtrusive, and folds up nice and small for travel.

Appears to update fine with a decent enough FPS rate. Way better then the ten-years-plus Logitech model we had were it was very low res with nauseating shearing/blurring effects.
Plus this one works in normal/low lighting situations just fine.

Now this camera might not be 'HD' per say but that's not a "CON" as it's probably, actually, smarter to get one like this that is ~1024 x 768 as it is plenty for simple Skype or Google Hangouts use.
Lessor res generally means less CPU overhead for compression and less bandwidth; which in general equals more perceived "smoothness".

Plus it's hard to beat for the price-point. Just drop about a Jackson for these and not have to worry about overkill 4x price for more bells and whistles that we probably wouldn't even notice. And if I didn't like it, I don't have much invested in it; but it does turn out to exactly fit the bill.

Cons: The only minor con about it: for the paranoid of us, knowing that there is a possibility any internet/wired camera or microphone can be remotely hijacked through targeted malware attacks..(although Big brother would get awfully bored listening/watching me).

There is no little plastic slider deal to block the camera
But then a little 1¢ piece of black tape flap could be improvised for this, or just tilt it up to face the ceiling.
What I do anyhow is just unplug it when I'm not using it, thus it couldn't even be used for remote listening. My secrets are safe (for now).

Other Thoughts: Ended up buying three of these so I could talk with family members while working away from home.
So far everyone is happy with them.
Cheap and effective, hard to beat.
