3 out of 5 eggsSolid for basic usage.

Pros: Decent video quality and adequate mic.

Cons: Very short cable.
Poor driver/software package.
Won't be detected if the mic is not set to default or is disabled.

Other Thoughts: I see people reviewing who complain about disappearing camera and lockups. I haven't experienced any freezes because I'm using the short cable and I have decent internet performance, but the driver/software package is poor. With the LifeCam 3.6 software loaded even in Skype (a Microsoft application) the controls are woefully inadequate.

You get better control when the LifeCam software is uninstalled.

If you find that Skype or LifeCam is suddenly not seeing the camera but it shows up in Windows devices simply double check that the Windows Sound settings have the camera's mic set as default. Even "default communication" won't work.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Descent quality, for $30

Cons: Horrible software; Freezes often.

Other Thoughts: I use 2 cameras for nature recording in the backyard/park. 48 foot usb extension on both. Lifecam software will freeze with a gust of wind; doesn't work at all in low light. ; Arcsoft software works very well with this camera, even in low light. Good thing Microsoft's monopoly doesn't include webcam software.

3 out of 5 eggsThe disapearing webcam

Pros: Good video/decent audio when working

Cons: For me, this webcam every so often decides to not work.
It acts like it is detected, but no software, not even Microsoft's program, can capture video from it.
I am usually able to get it working again after enough driver installation/other stuff, but not this time. I'm done with it.

Other Thoughts: With my luck, it'll start working again by the time the new one arrives...

4 out of 5 eggsweb cam

Pros: nice clear picture, added a 16 ft extension cable with amp up to get a good picture but sometimes the sound don't come through

Cons: by it self it works great, if you use a extension make sure it is good enough to get 30 fps

4 out of 5 eggsIt works

Pros: 720p...see cons

Cons: 720p is a bit pixelated. Had to do a lot of tweaking to get it working right.

Other Thoughts: Cheap 720p webcam that can be easily tweaked to suit your needs.

3 out of 5 eggsWindows Live Essentials?

Pros: Good picture quality.
Worked on Windows 7 right out of the Box.
No software installation, or so I thought, read below...

Cons: Cant remove funky base or mount to tripod.
Wants to install software I do not need nor want.

Other Thoughts: I can't explain why this cam works out of the box but when it's left plugged in when I reboot it wants to install software.
Quote:
"Setting up your LifeCam involves the following steps:
1. Downloading and installing the latest software.
2. Installing Windows Live Essentials
3. Connecting your LifeCam"

Um... I do not want Windows Live or anything to do with Windows Live. Now I got to figure out why it's intent on putting it on my computer and IF I can remove it after it's hijacked me without it bugging me again.

Feels like just like Google forcing everyone with a gmail account to get Google +. I'm getting rather sick of corporations compelling or forcing us into their social networks. It's all an effort to mine personal data.

1 out of 5 eggsPiece of junk.

Pros: Easy to install and use.

Cons: Started acting up at about the 30 day mark. At first thought it was a software issue. Worked through the trouble shooting steps and rolled back a non related driver that installed just prior to failure and it worked again for a few more days.
After fighting with the camera for a little over a week and a half I was able to determine that there is a defect/short with the cord. Most likely where the cord goes into the back of the camera.
Since the product is now more than 30 days old it's beyond the return or exchange date and I'm stuck with a $35 piece of junk that only sometimes works. Thank you Microsoft for another fine product.
