Sennheiser - Noise-Cancelling Headphones
(PXC 250-II)

The successor to the hugely successful PXC 250 is here - the brand-new PXC 250-II. It improves upon the previous model making it our best value yet.

The Mark II on-ear, collapsible mini-headphones are equipped with NoiseGard™ technology to cancel up to 80% of droning, fatiguing airplane or bus cabin noise without added bulk or size. They are also equipped with a convenient in-line volume control which enables the listener to adjust playback volume even when the music player is stowed.

The PXC 250-II headphones are foldable and also function as normal headphones without NoiseGard activated. A single AAA battery provides up to 50 hours of NoiseGard performance. An extensive set of accessories - in-flight audio adapter, carrying case and AAA battery - completes the package.

  • Sennheiser NoiseGard™ technology dramatically reduces droning background noise

3 out of 5 eggsThey work, sorta.

Pros: They are well made, and very compact, they fold up and go in a case that's maybe 4x6x1 inches. They are lightweight, and comfortable, battery life is decent. Sound reproduction is pretty good, but it I'm not sure if they are the most powerful drivers I've ever heard.

Cons: Noise cancelling... um... sorta... if you have them on your head, and you don't have them turned on, it's actually louder than if you had nothing on at all. I'm not sure how they accomplished that feat, but it's true. While they are pretty good and clear sounding, they don't seem to filter out background noise that well.

I use them while flying, as I've been doing field service work, and while it's an improvement, flying in the back of a DC9, all you're gonna hear is music with Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr in the background. They'll take the edge off, but regular shooting ear protection will do that too. I'd expect active cancellation to have a bit more power than this.

Other Thoughts: I think the system is probably a good base, and as I got mine brand new from an estate sale, I can't complain for the price I paid. I'm looking for new ones because after 2 years of use, the foam on the ear pieces is starting to separate from the structure. They are nice because they fit nicely in the side of my computer bag for storage, but folding and unfolding the unit and untangling the wire and control unit after every use is a pain in the rear. I'm looking for a larger set that completely covers the ear in hopes of improved performance for air travel, whether they be bluetooth or wired, I really don't care. Although wired is a necessity if you're on a plane and trying to connect to the on board entertainment you might need a couple of adapters as well (which I carry in the same little case)

Overall they are ok, but not great. I think if the drivers were bigger it would probably be perfect.

3 out of 5 eggsOK for price, but not what I was looking for.

Pros: These headphones are nice and compact. They store nicely for carrying around in a backpack for, say, school or travel.

Dialogue from movies (or any other recorded dialogue I'm sure) stands out very well from background noise when noise cancelling is enabled.

Cons: Summary:
If you are looking for good noise cancelling headphones, I don't think these fit in that category personally. Suck it up, and spend the money... or else you will likely regret it.

These are advertised as noise cancelling. They technically do, but not as well as I would have liked. They are a supra-aural design (on-ear.) In my opinion, this results in noise INCREASE without the noise reduction piece turned on; which results in the noise cancelling component having to work harder in the first place. Once it is on, it works pretty good. For something like a study hall or coffee shop, it is pretty good. They really do reduce noise to a true background level so that you can hear what you are listening to. They do not work as good as something like the Bose QC 15 (if you've been to US based Best Buys, you may have tried them out.)

Truthfully these work great as noise reduction headphones, for the price. However, if you are looking for noice CANCELLING headphones... these don't compare. They are in a class below. I have a set of Senheiser HD 429s that reduce noise comperably... but for $100 less (and they aren't "noise cancelling" headphones... they accomplish this with their circumaural design.) This is fine as long as you buy them knowing this. I only gave 3 stars to them to make this stand out. I bought them based on the 5 star reviews and regretted it.... I sent them back for a refund (want to get the PXC 450x instead.)

Additionally, the cord really is a little annoying. The noise cancelling control component is on the cable, which is a little bulky and awkward. The cable does not detach either... so if you want to use them for the noise cancelling component without listening to anything... you're stuck with the cable dangling.

Other Thoughts: If you are looking for something between simple Circumaural (over ear) headphones to do noise reduction... and are tight on dough, these are pretty good. If you are truely looking for noise cancelling headphones (especially if you have tried out in-store demos of Bose or something) these don't compare.

If noise cancelling is one of your top concerns, these will likely disappoint... if great audio, compact design, and noise reduction are your primary shopping criteria... these would get 5 stars for that.

5 out of 5 eggsThese are too small to be good

Pros: I thought at first, but I was very wrong. Literally, everything not listed in the cons is well done. FLAC + high quality gapless audio player + 192000hz SR + these babies = A whole new dimension of music.

I also want to point out that even though they're small and "cheap", they don't feel fragile in the slightest.

Cons: A few small things that make this product kind of cheap overall. The cord is really thin, The actual cups on the headphones are only 4.5cm in diameter (see "Other Thoughts"), which I've actually found to be lighter and some convenient than large cups. Noise cancelling also seems kind of whimpy, but I seem to have incredibly sensitive ears, so that's probably just me.

Other Thoughts: When I first got these, I was confused about how small they were. I thought they'd be garbage, but I decided to give them a try anyway. I realized how horribly wrong I was in the first 3 seconds of the first song. I've been a music enthusiest for at least 6 years now, and I can honestly say that I'm only now able to enjoy music the way it was meant to be enjoyed.

These headphones are crystal clear at the extremes: Technical Symphonic Black Metal, Dubstep (real dubstep, none of that Skrillex garbage), and even the insanely intrecate workings of Dream Theater.

My only complaint is that I didn't save up for something that wasn't one of their cheapest products.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: They do exactly what the description says they will. Audio quality is great. Mids are pronounced and bass is amazing for headphones. As far as comfort goes, I forget I'm even wearing them as soon as I put them on.

Cons: The cord has a controller in the middle for the noise canceling and volume controls. It's a little big, but has a clip on the back so it's not too bad.

Other Thoughts: I commute to and from work on the train every day. The noise canceling ability of these headphones is great. I can just barely hear the hum of the train if I focus on it, and have a hard time hearing the conductor screaming out stops (good thing I live and work at each end of the line).

Noise canceling test: passed with flying colors.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent travel headphones

Pros: Small profile and carrying case means it can slip into any computer bag / briefcase / purse / whatever. The metal headband is great - I generally put my headphones through their paces which means that I've lost/destroyed several pairs over the years. When I test headphones I usually put them through a number of tests and these performed as follows:
1. The workplace test - did an excellent job of filtering out noisy keyboards and printers, even some co-worker banter was filtered out pretty flawlessly.
2. The airplane test - see cons
3. The car test - On a road trip, I took these out and played them for maybe half an hour. No road noise bumps, no background noises were heard at all.
4. The home test - I tried these on while the vacuum cleaner was going and was actually able to hear the music during the process!

Cons: The airplane test was the only one where it didn't pass muster. I used these on a long flight from Baltimore to Los Angeles and while it was hard to hear the movie I was playing on my laptop (The Big Lebowski) - I could hear most of the movie's music and dialogue but still the sound of the airplane engines couldn't be blocked out from the noise cancelling filter. I also tried these out on AirTran's in-flight XM Radio and they worked pretty well but not 100% perfect. The cord is kind of flimsy and cheaply made, which means it will probably have to be replaced with the kind of wear and tear I put on my headphones. Also if you don't put them on the correct way they tend to collapse easily. These are just minor flaws but nothing major.

Other Thoughts: I've never owned a pair of headphones this nice before - and I've mainly used some overpriced sound equipment (for review purposes they shall remain anonymous but most people will know what I'm referring to) that doesn't perform nearly as well as these Sennheisers do. These babies even outperform the premium sound system in my car!
