5 out of 5 eggsGreat headphones.

This review is from: Sennheiser HD598 On-Ear Headphones

Pros: Very comfortable. Most headsets have that "new headset" feel where they clamp kind of tight on your head until you break them in, but these were comfortable right out of the box. Lots of padding as well. I've been dealing with on/off hearing problems related to an ear infection, so my ears are pretty sensitive, and these are still really comfortable to me even when I've been wearing them for hours.

Sound quality is amazing, even though I'm just using my motherboard's onboard sound. My old gaming headset (Corsair Vengeance 1500) broke, and as I was looking for a replacement, a lot of people told me "forget headsets, just go with a really good pair of headphones and a separate mic" as advice. I listened to that advice, and now I'm glad I did.

These headphones have a 6.3mm jack with an adapter that allows you to plug them into smaller ports like the audio jacks on a PC. It's pretty handy for me because, while I'm primarily using these as a "modified gaming headset" with an attached mic that I bought separately, I also play guitar. These work quite nicely with my guitar amp too.

The cable is completely detachable and not soldered to the headphones. I really like this because it means I can easily replace the cable if it breaks in any way. I mentioned that my headset was a Corsair Vengeance 1500. It broke because it had an in-line volume control halfway down the cord, and the cord was soldered in there as well as at the speakers. The wire on that model is fairly poor quality, and mine started to back out/fray after a while, which caused sound in the left speaker to stop working. Since that wire was soldered in everywhere, I couldn't do much to replace it with my limited skills at electronics repair. I mention that because it was one selling point on the Sennheiser HD 598 for me...it's good to know that I can simply replace the cord if I ever have that problem with these (I'm not trying to give Corsair a hard time by any means here because the Vengeance 1500 was a great headset for the almost 3 years I had mine, but I thought it would be relevant to mention the model of my old headset here).

The headphones also feel sturdy and well built, so that's another pro.

Cons: I have these plugged in the front panel audio connectors on my PC, and when you're using that included adapter, it does stick out quite a bit. I've bumped into it once or twice while moving around in my chair.

The "open back" design means sound leaks out, so others in the room can hear you. This is not really a con for me because I do all my gaming and guitar playing in a room by myself anyway, but just know that other people who are in the same room as you will probably be able to hear whatever you're hearing.

Other Thoughts: I was going to list the color as a con (my first thought when I saw the picture of these was "Ivory? Really?"), but funny enough, it's actually kind of started to grow on me in the couple of weeks I've had these headphones.

If anyone is curious, I'm basically using these as a "gaming headset" with a Modmic, which is just a separate mic you can attach to a pair of headphones.

Pros: Great when they worked.

5 out of 5 eggsGoosebumps

This review is from: Sennheiser HD598 On-Ear Headphones

Pros: Unbelievable sound clarity, range, and comfort. They are really lightweight without feeling cheap, which plays into the comfort. The open back serves two benefits: 1) Significantly improves the sound quality. 2) Allows you to hear other people and/or sounds without removing the headphones.

Cons: The color. Why is the black version more expensive?

The open back design does mean that others can hear what you are listening to. My wife's first comment was "Well, this is going to be great for me", in reference to the fact that she can now hear anything that is played through them while I'm wearing them. She was even able to sing along with my music while sitting across the table. Just be mindful of where you will be using these and whom might get annoyed with the "noise" coming from them.

Other Thoughts: Hooked these headphones up to my on-board sound, and they were probably about 50% better than my Plantronics Gamecom 780. Then I got my Soundblaster ZxR... WOW!

These headphones are great, but they can only be as good as what's driving them. Get a sound card that can push a 600ohm headset, or get an external DAC/AMP that can push them. You will not be disappointed with these headphones when using on-board sound, but you will be kicking yourself whenever you finally switch to a proper system that can drive these headphones and see just what you were missing.

5 out of 5 eggsTop Quality Headphones

This review is from: Sennheiser HD598 On-Ear Headphones

Pros: The most comfortable pair of headphones I've ever used, bar none. I've used them just about every day for nearly 3 years now, and they're still going strong and sounding great. Could not recommend them highly enough.

Cons: Not very portable, they stay on my desk at home, generally. The connector is pretty large, as well.

Other Thoughts: If you have the cash to spend, you can't do better.

5 out of 5 eggsComfortable - Great sound

This review is from: Sennheiser HD598 On-Ear Headphones

Pros: These headphones sound as good as my speaker system of course they can't reproduce the deep bass vibration sensation of a powered subwoofer but that's to be expected.
They do require a bit of a break-in period though. Out of the box the sound was less than impressive but after a bit of use, they sound just fine.
They sit very lightly on my head and don't crush my skull or ears. They can be worn comfortably for hours.

Cons: The cable attachment at the ear piece seems to be a bit fragile but that may be just my perception.

Other Thoughts: I'm not overly fond of the color but that's a matter of taste and not a reflection on the headphones.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat headphones for a digital piano

This review is from: Sennheiser HD598 On-Ear Headphones

Pros: I bought these headphones to use with my high-end Kawai CA95 digital piano. I am very, very pleased with both the sound and comfort of these headphones. I played for 2 hours the first day I got them and truly forgot I was wearing them.
These are an 'open back design' which results in a sound experience that many describe as the sound being more natural and resulting in sound that better represents the spatial sound characteristics of a piano. Conversely, 'closed back' phones tend to make it sound like the sound is coming from 'within your head'. In addition, because my playing environment is generally fairly quiet I like being able to hear any ambient sounds - like being called to dinner - in the room around me.
Acoustically (to my ears), these headphones faithfully reproduce the sound of my digital piano (which in turn is designed to faithfully reproduce the sound of a Kawai acoustic concert grand). This is the first pair of higher-priced 'audiophile' headphones that I have owned, but compared to the budget phones I had been using there is ABSOLUTELY no comparison.
I did quite a bit of research for these, specifically for use with a digital piano, prior to purchase. One source of good information that I found was the Piano World on-line piano forum (a good source for ALL things piano, by the way). I expect I'm not supposed to link to this forum but I would recommend this site for a number of digital pianist' perspective on headphones.
Some have said that the color and trim of the headphones reminds them of the interior of a 1980's German sports sedan. Well, I couldn't afford a car like that in the 80's (or now, for that matter), so I think the color and design is pretty cool and the build quality seems very good.
In many general discussion about headphones, there are usually 'audiophiles' who recommend a separate headphone amplifier. With my piano at least, I see no need, as I only need to turn the volume control to about 1/3 of maximum to match the same sound level of the piano's native speaker system at full volume. In other words, these headphones seem pretty 'efficient' in my use. My piano has 1/4" headphone jacks I don't use the supplied 3.5mm adapter.
Finally, these headphones come with a 10 foot audio cord that allows me to get up and get music from the cabinet next to the piano. If 10 feet is too much length for your usage, the cord can be replaced with a 4.5 foot version available from Sennheiser or other sources - according to what I've read.

5 out of 5 eggsIncredible Sound

This review is from: Sennheiser HD598 On-Ear Headphones

Pros: I've had these for 2 years now, and they are still going strong. Excellent soundstage, buy a ModMic and pair them together to make a great headset.

Cons: Doesn't do my laundry.

Other Thoughts: I bought these when they were still $250, it's an even better deal now.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic

This review is from: Sennheiser HD598 On-Ear Headphones

Pros: Sennhesier Quality/Warranty

Comfortable, good looking

Very long cable and 3.5 mm adaptor

Best over the ear headphones (200-300$) I've used in the past 10 years of using them.

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: I got these because they were the best reviewed Sennheiser over the ear headphones besides the 650's (But I didn't have an extra 300 to spend.) I picked these up because of the reviews of great quality and users saying they've the same pair for 4+ years with no problems. And I believe them after using them, absolutely best 200$ headphones I've ever had the pleasure of using.

Pros: I purchased my pair at a local Magnolia store inside Best Buy. I'm using them with a Sound Blaster Z sound card and they sound amazing in games and for music or movies. Amazing audio quality and extremely comfortable to wear for hours.

Have to try these out if you get the chance, you'll want to buy them.

Cons: None.
