Five Year Warranty
- Pros: I've been using trackballs for several years now, both Logitech & Kensington. None of my Logitech trackballs have lasted more than a year or so without something breaking, while my current Kensington trackball has lasted for four years (so far).
Kensington stands by their products - more so than Logitech. The SlimBlade has a 5 year warranty.
- Cons: Kensington has switched to all-plastic construction on their trackballs, leading to a flimsier feel than the old ones with metal rollers.
- Other Thoughts: My Kensington "Expert" trackball has a LIFETIME warranty! A few years ago, while cleaning it, I accidentally popped out one of the tiny plastic beads that hold the trackball. I called Kensington, thinking I'd have to beg for a repair, but no - the woman I spoke to asked me to email or fax a copy of my receipt. I did so, & Kensington sent me a brand new trackball, no questions asked - I didn't even have to send them the old one. That's customer service!
works fine in linux
- Pros: very smooth trackball, low profile design, and unique scroll design.
works out of the box in linux ( using ubuntu 9.10 running 2.6.31 kernel) All 4 buttons work, no 'software' required. No need for a wrist rest makes for a smaller form factor.
- Cons: kind of pricey, its a little bit cheaper over at 4m4zon. ( sorry new egg, they beat you on the price )
non-standard button events for the top two buttons. 'enhanced' functionality provided via 'software'
- Other Thoughts: I have been using the kensington expert for the past few years and really liked it. I waited a bit before getting the slimblade since the linux kernel at the time did not support all 4 buttons. With the latest kernel all is good.
The slimblade is a worthy successor to the expert. It is as comfortable and the scrolling ball is similar in behaviour to the scroll ring. at least for me it is. I can scroll by just using my thumb ( just like on the expert ) and as a plus the scrolling on the slimblade is quite smooth. I have read a fair amount of negative reviews here and at 4m4zon but most seem to complain about the non-standard top buttons and supplied software. If you are running linux, and it is the latest kernel, these problems won't effect you at all.
vertical optic failed after 50 days
- Pros: I'm a quadriplegic and have been using trackballs since windows first came out. I've been using Kensington TB's for almost 20 years. As a programmer, iI put them through some good heavy usage. They have always worked well, and lasted several years each.
- Cons: This one, the most expensive one, crapped out on me barely past 30 day warranty. Purchased it 09/13/2009. I didn't hook it up for a good week after recieving it. It failed on me 11/17/2009.
