5 out of 5 eggsUPDATE to 1/26/2014 Review

Pros: * Great sound, especially for gaming
* 8 drivers
* Inline volume adjustments for each channel
* Good driver software
* Syba honors its 2 yr warranty

Cons: * Apparently plastic portion of headset a bit fragile, but I think Syba may correct this in the future versions - just be aware.

Other Thoughts: The plastic portion of my Oblanc 5.1 headband broke into several pieces. I don't usually write a follow-up to a review. However, Syba's quick response & replacement of my defective headset indicates a clear commitment to making those of us who buy this headset happy customers. Nicholas D. - since you seem so happy with your Oblanc's don't give up, RMA Syba for a replacement. Here's what I did:

* Aug 10 Sun – submitted RMA

* Aug 11 Mon – received e-mail with RMA # and instructions for returning product

* Aug 18 – received e-mail telling me RMA replacement had been shipped with USPS tracking number

* Aug 19 – new retail boxed Oblanc 5.1 headset delivered to my door

It doesn’t get much better than that! I used my Corsair Vengeance 1500s while waiting for my replacement headset, & realized how much I prefer the sound from the Oblanc. I think it has to do with the Oblanc's 8 drivers & headset driver software. A manufacturer that provides that kind of support gets a 2nd chance from me - thanks Syba.

3 out of 5 eggsAwesome... while it lasted...

Pros: -Sound quality was pretty awesome. Little extra Bass that could be controlled along with surround and driver knobs allowing you to customize everything you could want.

-Mic is pretty awesome after I fixed windows defaulting to 50/100 capture!

-Pretty comfy with an open sound rather than being closed off which is nice if you are in a quiet environment for nicer sound.

-Obviously, REAL SURROUND. With 3 drivers in each ear the surround sounds more realistic than typical virtual surround sound headsets.

-Headset is tight at first but it does start to adjust to your head and allows it to stay on snug,

Cons: -Broke VERY quickly. Started out with one crack on the headband that I taped in hope of keeping my product together. Since then I must have like 5 cracks in this headband. I have seen others complain about this very issue and for a $150+ headset I would expect this to last far longer than a few measly months. The headband is just way too tight and I don't think I have a huge head!

-Software hard to find. DO NOT LOSE YOUR CD. The included CD gives you the software to set up your headset in stereo or 5.1 surround. Lucky for me I horde my electronics so finding this disc was easy but trying to find this software online was impossible. Maybe I simply was blind but I couldn't find it anywhere making this tiny disc very important.

-While the knobs to control surround and what not is nice it does add weight that pulls your headset down. You have to clip it to your shirt otherwise it will weigh the headset down. Also at times the knobs will get moved from rubbing on your shirt which obviously is annoying as their are 5 different knob setting that you must adjust to get it perfect for you.

-While the headset is fairly comfortable I do wish it had nicer padding. While this padding is usable is isn't amazing and for a product of this price I think it can be improved in a revision.

-While I said the open cup design was great for gaming in quiet places it is a different story when you have sounds around you. With a fan going in my room I constantly hear it unless the game is loud enough so while I personally enjoy the open sound, it can cause sound to leak to others around you and makes it bad for blocking out noise filled environments.

Other Thoughts: -Cable had a tendency to twist up on me which can be annoying at times. I do not consider this enough of a reason for me to bash the headset for it but it has a permanent twist to it now that is annoying at times.

-When I purchased mine the headset was like $50 and I thought it was a steal for REAL surround. I feel like obviously for that price these are a steal but that doesn't change the fact they broke about 3 months in and now about 6 months in I have multiple cracks. Mind you these cracks haven't rendered the headset useless but the tight fit they had is now gone and so i find at times it will slide off if I go to pick something off the floor or what not.

-Mic does replay your sound to you. While some may hate hearing their own voice I have come to love it. It is really nice for allowing me to check my mic levels so as to not be yelling over my game volume. So be aware if you plan to use the mic headset it will play back your voice, luckily I notice no real delay so it sounds very natural rather than the Windows implementation that is loud and delayed making it impossible to use.

4 out of 5 eggsGood!

Pros: Great sound quality, and the mic is excellent. All around everything you need in a headset for gaming. I've used it everyday for months now and its held up just fine. Good build quality as well.

Cons: Hurts your head and ears after 6 or 7 hours of continuous use.

5 out of 5 eggsGood headset but Burn-In is the key*

Pros: I received the Syba Oblanc U.F.O 5.1 Headset right on schedule according to the UPS,(6 days after the "last expected delivery day" lucky me). Well, at least they still delivered the package for me. Anyways I followed the instructions on the manual, changed d the settings and switched the channel mode to 6ch. But the Oblanc Sound System software kept crashing so I used the CD to install the software instead of the one downloaded from the website and was able to fix the crashing problem. Then I watched a movie with a 5.1ch hd audio track along with these 5.1ch surround sound headsets over my ears, the movie was great, the sound quality was pretty good, especially the bass. But I still felt these could sound better. But I decided to leave the Oblanc software alone "its not the Oblanc's fault" he thought to himself. Instead the boy tweaked with the settings of the media player himself and after a while of tweaking with the settings in the player's audio system, internal audio filters, the extensions and all them add-on/plug-ins, He purt the Oblanc u.f.o headset on top of his head agAin. And he could tell,
....something had changed something had........HUH
WHAAT, NO!@@@!!!!!@................................................

Yes, he was right. The surround sound had gotten much better. Satisfied with the improvement in quality but being too beat from the hard day's work, The boy left the PC on and did a 24 hr burn-in streaming music through the headset. Basically, all we had to do was to tweak some settings in the media player and do a couple burn-in sessions to get them headphones straightened out. They sound great now and they kept sounding better and finally, It realized the true meaning behind the importance of.. so.u,n...t.o... BURN-IN YOUR DRIVERS. And so It decided to become the true sound of the surround sounding, 6 driver, sub-woofer headset of U.F.O 5.1.*

Cons: Faint white noise, or static noise, it goes away after a week or so, but might just depend on the environment you are in along with your headphones. Might get uncomfortable to wear after awhile if kept on for a long period of time.

2 out of 5 eggsBroke after a month

Pros: I loved the snug fit that these had. It was very comfortable for me. Not too tight but not very loose either.
The sound was great for playing FPS games. I could definitely hear more than I could before.

Cons: After a gaming session, I took the headphones off and I heard a snap. The headband part at the top is made of a cheap plastic that snapped. I stretched the headset enough to not touch my ears. Really does suck because I was enjoying this headset just to have it broken because of a cheap plastic.

3 out of 5 eggsit sounds good, but it's a little heavy

Pros: WOW factor. People see you will go "Oooo what the heck is that!?"

Bass is good and sound is sweet and clear.

Cons: Heavy, too heavy. You won't feel comfortable when playing game for extended hours. To me, too long for watching a normal movie wearing this.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

These headphones are designed to have a snug fit on the user.

If possible try adjusting the headset to get the proper fit for your exact head size to alleviate some of the pressure.

We have taken your critique about the weight of these headphones into consideration.

5 out of 5 eggsTwo thumbs up!

Pros: 1) Good headband adjustment - stays put
2) Great fit and finish
3) Good cord position of control module - from headset to module, clips on my belt or pocket nicely
4) I use Win 8 and I like how when I switch it on it takes over the sound and off it passes back to my speakers
5) The mic boom is awesome - super flexible the whole length and stays - you can position this right where it works best for you
6) I probably should have listed this first -
The sound quality is astonishing - I can understand spoken words in movies and games where I could not before - even with my Sony or JBL studio monitors! The bass is rich and all sound is crisp and clear from music to Far Cry in 5.1. Multiple speakers in each cup absolutely blows away virtual surround - apples and oranges.
7) The multi channel volume controls on the in line module really are handy - sometimes in a shoot out I have to bump down the bass its deafening!

Cons: I have zero cons here on these - Being critical I can't come up with a thing! The price is up there a bit; however, I paid more for professional monitors that this set blows away, so...not really a con.

Other Thoughts: The only improvement I could recommend is a good braided cable cover. These look like they will last a long time - a cable sleeve would just help that.
As for cable length, the first thing you need in your rigs accessory kit are some usb extension cables. Period. Who wants to crawl in behind their PC every time they connect something? I extend all my ports forward so I can plug everything in easily and change easily. Or get a usb 3 hub.
I will be ordering 4 more of these for my boys and wife. It's a no brainer.

1 out of 5 eggsSYBA Failed

Pros: Sounded real good with tweaking good positional audio

Cons: First these are extremely tight on your head and i have had about 8 pairs of headphones over the years by far way to tight but not the biggest con but they failed after about 2 weeks windows reports that device has reported and error and no longer reconized in windows tried on 3 different computers all said the same thing so the onboard usb sound card went bad again be warned these are very very tight and push too hard to where your ears touch the speakers on the inside then really start to hurt even more and i have a medium sized head

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

These headphones are designed to wear with a snug fit for each individual user.

Try updating the port drivers on your system and ensure any system updates have been applied.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Very good sound quality
Blocks external sounds well, and doesn't leak much sound out
Well built
Good deal on sale

Cons: A little tight on the ears - just extend earcups and put a foam pad on top of the head to reduce pressure.
Creates error messages, and low mic volume, on Mac and Linux

Other Thoughts: I first tried these by letting Windows install a driver; I had some problems which might or might not have been a result. After downloading the drivers from the web site everything worked well.

On both Mac and Linux the headphones kick up a kernel error, to the effect that the volume is too high. I take that to mean that the mic output is reporting too high a range. The mic does work, at least on the Mac (didn't try Linux after the error), but the volume was still low even when cranked up in the OS - at least it does work. And the sound output is good on every system tested.

The headphone uses the C-Media CM102 IC, which contains the USB interface, DACs and ADC, and power amp. It is a stereo part, so I don't understand how the stereo signal is converted to the 5.1 speakers in the earcups, but it does seem to work well. I just wish the chip didn't conflict with the generic drivers in Mac and Linux. To be fair, you may never notice unless you check the logs. The real-world consequence appears limited to low mic volume.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

When the device is connected to a Mac or Linux PC the drivers should be automatically installed

by the system.

If the drivers fail to install properly try updating the system and the port drivers.

Also check the Sound settings to determine if any special features have been enabled with the

5 out of 5 eggsSounds good to me.

Pros: Got on sale, and bought 2, one for son, He plugged his into his PS4 USB port and it was recognized. Not sure if he's getting 5.1 audio. But I get 5.1 audio to listen to my Blu-Ray disc on my PC USB with the included drivers . Love the way it sounds. Can adjust center, surround, front and sub woofer separately.

Cons: None, except 5.1 audio headphones are a little too expensive for my priorities.

Other Thoughts: If these were not on sale, I would not have bought them. Not really a headphone guy. I like electrostatic headphones, but won't pay that price either. Some things are not worth the money to me. But if you got it, got for it.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

We are glad your experience with our headphones was a positive one.

The PS4 has the capability to output 5.1 sound but may need to be set to it. Please check the settings to determine if 5.1 is set on default.

Please keep us updated on the status of your headphones.
