The VerticalMouse 3 is the latest generation from the inventors of the handshake grip mouse!
Evaluated by medical doctors, physical therapists, ergonomists and others at a university health services clinic, it's the only vertical mouse approved for use at UC Berkeley and for sale in the campus store. The patented shape supports your hand in an upright position that eliminates the "twist" in the forearm you must make when using a regular mouse. Many users reported that earlier models relieved hand, wrist and arm pain.
All they've really done is turned your regular mouse on its side, complete with all your regular buttons (and a couple more). The pointer control is just as accurate as a regular laser mouse, and it's designed to keep the side of your hand and your little finger from getting irritated from rubbing on your desk. Evoluent mouse for all - great first impressions
- Pros: Brilliant! Using the latest ver3, rev2 modlel. Works very very well ergonomically, extremely comfortable, with good science behind the design, and has great pointing precision that is easy to adjust. I am running it with standard XP HID drivers. This is the only really ergonomically sound pointing device that I know of that also includes a standard mouse wheel. Just started using, but very good so far. I have years of experience using ergonomic keyboards and pointers, especially the 3M Ergonomic Mouse (also excellent, but a bit less precise and no wheel) and the Logitech Comfort split keyboard (best of the wave or split designs). The VerticalMouse now looks like it will join the list of genuinely helpful ergonomic input devices. We'll see if this holds up as I get more time with it, but so far, so good.
- Cons: One I had was it was hard to find a reseller. More distribution for Evoluent! Thanks, newegg, for carrying this! A minor one on the design, but I wish it was just a bit easier to pick up and relocate on whatever surface it is being used on, i.e., when you've gotten near the edge and need to recenter the mouse physically. Perhaps some horizontal grooves or higher COF material on the button and other surfaces where your hand touches?
- Other Thoughts: Jack Lo's story, located on the packaging, of perserverence in developing and brining to market the VerticalMouse is inspiring! Great work, Jack, and much success! Love the packaging overall, actually, very easy to open, great explanatory text, very nice looking, honest, simple instructions that anticipates questions you may have (like driver requirements). Just shows the attention to detail that has gone into the design of the whole product experience.
So far so good, try it!
- Pros: Comfortable, seems to relieve wrist and arm pain as claimed. Lots of buttons, great tracking feel, accurate. Software seems stable and is highly customizable.
- Cons: The lowest button on mouse is useless. I had to disable it because I was constantly clicking on accident. No horizontal tilt scrolling.
- Other Thoughts: If ordinary mice are causing you pain or if you have carpal tunnel, try it. It's worth the $$. I am very happy with it so far.

Not as good as the 3M
- Pros: A step in the right direction, for those of us being tortured by mice 60 hours a week. Quality is good, but what you'd expect in this price range.
- Cons: Hand size makes more difference with this mouse than most, and my big hands have a difficult time with it.
- Other Thoughts: I ran across the 3M EM500, which works much better for me.
Nice feel - but no Mac support
- Pros: Wonderful feel and far better posture than conventional mice
- Cons: I use this on a Mac and there are no supplied drivers/conf options. Although it will work out of the box, I want to be able to disable the lowest (3rd) button, as I seem to naturally want to press it, as well as customize some of the other buttons/wheels. The Evoluent website *STATES* that the low volume of Mac usage does not warrant a custom Mac driver, and gives links to 3rd party drivers: One is a full blown software app that is does not allow me to configure it the way - for example - I can my M$ mouse; the other driver link is NOT freeware - the supplier charges $20.
The mouse does come with comprehensive Windows support, but for the lack of Mac support, I'm probably going to return mine.
- Other Thoughts: Nice product - terrible marketing.
Good for the Wrists
- Pros: Initial results were immediate - however it is not an excuse to ignore stretches and breaks as it's still possible for pain to continue. But, soooo much better than using a regular mouse.
- Cons: Price (deduct 1 egg)... although cheaper than a trip to the doctor's office.
- Other Thoughts: It takes a little while to get used to. Don't expect friends or co-workers to be able to use your computer right away. Also, it's harder to use with your left hand than a regular mouse (note they sell left handed versions) so if the computer you use has both right and left handed users, you'll need another mouse.
