5 out of 5 eggsThe future came too early!

Pros: Games:

Current integration:
There are few games that have integrated the hydra. Portal 2 is cool, but I HATE puzzle games. I just want to smash things with explosion.

Motion Creator:
Sixense created a software package that finally added a UI for creating profiles for different games to map the hydra to buttons a mouse movements.

Emulating a mouse is way more fun for casual gaming. It feels like you're holding the gun and shooting, giving you the impression that you are the character, not just controlling it from an abstract control scheme.

Future Potential:
The hydra and rift go well together. Many many people are making demo level games (including myself) that really show off how cool this tech is. It won't be long until we have a few really fun games that use the hydra.

Content Creation:

Music:
The hydra has a midi app with x/y/z position, rotation, speed, acceleration, trigger, joystick, and all the buttons for each hand. It's really a sweet way to control tons of midi channels. It's also great for controlling even a few channels with great precision.

3D Motion Capture:
The motion tracking has been integrated into software, so you can capture its movement, to create digital puppets or just hold sculpting surfaces in your hand.

Regular ol' mouse replacement:
It's a sweet mouse replacement for a HTPC. It feels smooth, responsive and professional.

Cons: You cannot beat a mouse for serious aiming for your local noob grinding fps gameplay. The hydra doesn't seem to be very competative in Motion Creator skinned games.

Not enough people have invested in this for big companies to create games around it. There is a huge lack of software as of Spring 2014.

Gamepad mode doesn't work for most people.

It does not ship with software to translate movement into joystick axis. (but with enough trickery, this can be done)

Cable length is short, and half the length of the cable is connected before it splits apart.

The cables tangle very easily.

It's hard to find a good spot for on your desk

In the sixense motioncreator (not razor) drivers, you cannot turn the pulsing green light on.

Left 4 Dead 2 integration (with throwing grenades behind yourself as you flee) has not been released. I really want to blow stuff up!

Other Thoughts: I like it better than the leap, but it really comes down to game integration. Some people really love a 5 leap demo and don't like the hydra.

It's a new thing. Don't expect to be a pro fps player after 10 hours of wasd and mouse training. Get used to it, but don't expect it to beat mouse players. Learn to customize skins to get the most out of it. There are skins for almost every game.

Some of my friends don't use their hydras much, because there aren't many games for them. I use mine a lot because I make my own games. If you don't want to play lots of demos and program yourself, you may not want this yet.

It will likely work with Sixense Stem games, and works alongside a stem for even more tracking. I'll be keeping mine for a while.

I'm really excited to see this tech get supported in AAA games, because it's very fun.

3 out of 5 eggsCool, but maybe too gimmicky

Pros: They work really well and are pretty easy to set up and use; control software is nice; Steam is starting to natively support in their games like Portal and Team Fortress 2.

Cons: Ratcheting for side panning is annoying, but you can usually set that up differently; I found there were two different control apps, and one had more profiles than the other, so it was annoying that it took research and effort to find profiles for the games I wanted to play.

Other Thoughts: Really cool, and they do work really well, but I don;t like that I have to switch control software to play different games. I also wish it was easier to customize or setup your own game profiles. Love it for Portal 2, but it will never replace my keyboard/mouse for FPS action.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Product, okay service.

Pros: Great Product.

Cons: Faulty Hardware needed to be replaced.

Other Thoughts: Great fun product once you get it working with the right drivers and get the sensitivity dialed in. Makes gaming all sorts of new fun, where it has gotten boring before it made things much more immersive.

A personal issue I had though was that the hardware I received was sub par... Something got through CQ that shouldn't have, my left controller was bricked and my connections were all corroded and the base-station had something rattling around inside of it. Having not tried it out first I threw the box out thinking there would be no reason to return it. I didn't know I needed the packaging to return it let alone have to, so I ended up having to return it to Razer directly who hooked me up with a brand new unit free of charge which totally rocks and the thing kicks. Fast shipping on both sides just wish I woulda gotten a good one the first time so I didn't have to wait 3 - 4 weeks getting it all sorted out.

5 out of 5 eggsRazer hydra

Pros: This piece of equipment does as advertised, it provides a new and exciting experience. the tracking is really accurate and all the hardware works right.

Cons: There is a learning curve per game, and the drivers are a bit weak.

Other Thoughts: If you get this, do NOT expect it to make you become the best at every single game, its like transitioning from a game pad to a mouse and keyboard.

4 out of 5 eggsEpic hardware, not so epic software

Pros: The Razer Hydra's best shines in its hardware. The product has been built to feel good in your hand, similar to an Xbox 360 controller. The technology itself is quite accurate, as you can see your crosshair jitter, proving itself.

Cons: The only problems with the product would be the software. My controllers are reversed and few games support the hardware natively. Because the technology is fairly new, being the first PC controller to be controlled via motion, I can only take away one egg from this, mainly being from the lack of games. However, the profiler allows you to add support for more games, but these don't support a floating crosshair, with that being my only con.

4 out of 5 eggsIt's got potential...

Pros: The Razer Hydra is dubbed the Wii Mote of PC Gaming by some people. The hardware feels comfortable and reliable. With the exception of a sticky bumper, the Razer Hydra's buttons work comfortably and respond greatly.

- Very good Buttons
- Buttons give a Mouse-Click type noise
- Feels like an Xbox 360 controller without the finger clump
- Motion Controls
- Excellent for games with support

Cons: - Drivers are somewhat weak
- Only 2 games are available
- My controllers are reversed. Probably a driver problem
- High price

Other Thoughts: Overall, the Hydra is a very good device. You should definitely buy one, and hold on to it. Once games start supporting it, you'll love this device.

5 out of 5 eggsSoftware Update Makes This Way Better

Pros: The hardware is great.
Can be used with almost any game.
Has native support for portal 2 and soon TF2.
New configurations posted on the sixense forums all the time.
You can customize the controls for each game.
New freelook, dual-analog, hybrid and akimbo modes are awesome.
Comes with portal 2.

Cons: Software still needs some work.
Customizing controls requires editing XML files by hand and is kinda a pain. Although it's one of the easier XML formats I've seen.
You have to be pretty close to the base station. More than a foot or so and the jitter starts getting annoying.

Other Thoughts: I picked this up not too long after it came out. The controls were awesome in portal 2, but most other games didn't have native support for it and required "ratcheting" to turn around with was slow and annoying.

Luckily the developers on the sixense forums have been listening to the community and release an update recently. The update fixed a lot of problems with the original release by making it easier to configure controls, but the best part was the new aim modes (freelook, dual-analog, hybrid, and akimbo).

I wont go into detail, but basically you can emulate the portal 2 controls in any game now with no more ratcheting. The hybrid controls especially are very intuitive and give comparable accuracy to a mouse.

Before the update I would have given this a mediocre rating, but the update convinced me the only downfalls of the Hydra are in the software, and the software is being actively improved. The new aim modes especially is what the Hydra needed to be a great prod

5 out of 5 eggsNot too shabby for a gimmick!

Pros: - The technology itself. It's a gimmick done right, The magnetic tracking that is used makes movement fluid and precise which is perfect for FPS games. after a few days you will soon forget you're even holding the controllers and the motion will feel more like using a weightless mouse.

-Sixense hard at work. the Sixense team has been working on the software since it's release. the current software driver (1.00) is a Con which i will explain below. yet their BETA software found on the forums is becoming flawless and their support list for games grows and grows after each update along with the help from community suggestions.

-The design. Razer nailed it because the earlier design of it was quite scary. both controllers fit in your hands better than any wii remote, it has almost a 360controller feeling when you hold it. the buttons placements are wonderful and the sticks don't wear on your thumbs after prolong use.

All in all it's an excellent alternative for non-competitive pla

Cons: -The current Software (v1.00) is very lacking. one thing off the bat most people will not like is that you can't customize your own controls/game profiles within the software yet. that can only be done through notepad and a quick guide on how. another thing lacking within the current software is the ability to save your options which resets every time the program is closed.

-Game compatibility. As much as i love using the Hydra it is not for every game out there especially ones that require the keyboard and massive hotkeys such as RTS games and as someone has said "you can't tell someone GG HF with it"

Other Thoughts: There is a learning curve to this controller at first especially with ratcheting but Sixense offers tutorial videos on youtube and their forums for better understanding of it.

The tutorial videos also goes for setting up "the orb" in which i even learned from them that it doesn't have to be right in front of you to use. as long as it is parallel with your controllers it with register with the magnetic field.

Lastly read the manual!

4 out of 5 eggssteep learning curve but fun to play

Pros: Now that I played around with for a while, I can see the appeal of this thing. Though not more accurate than mouse, it could be as accurate and natural.
Now I can play my PC games on couch, lol.

Cons: Still the software support is lagging behind. Guess it will take time for the game developers to support this new tech. Still waiting for L4D2 patch!!!
Minus one egg!!!

Other Thoughts: At first I was kind of disappointed with it and gave one egg below, but it was because of the steep learning curve. It takes a while to learn to use it naturally like using keyboard and mouse. Now that I see the point of this device, I give 4 eggs instead.
If you're into motion sensing, give it a try.

3 out of 5 eggsBad Software

Pros: *When the software isnt getting in the way, it works great and is fun to have.
*Works very well with Valve's games.

Cons: *Its what you expect from motion controls.
*The software is TERRIBLE and most compatible games do not play very well with the motion controls.
*It would have been nice if the remotes were cordless.

Other Thoughts: Its important that you have the base positioned right or else it wont work as intended.
