OverviewCustomer ReviewSpecificationsProduct Tour
The MDR-V6 headphones from Sony prove that studio monitor quality sound reproduction doesn’t have to break the bank. The closed back sound isolates the music from ambient noise for minimal distractions and produces a tighter bass response. The 40mm ferrite core drivers have a 5Hz to 30kHz frequency response so you hear everything from the deepest lows to the highest highs.

The 100 foot oxygen free copper cord minimizes signal loss. The 3.5mm mini plug comes with an adapter for 6.3mm (1/ 4") home audio use.

Excellent Headphones

white Reviewed By: Sye on 9/28/2009

Tech Level Tech Level: average - Ownership: more than 1 year
Pros: I have had a pair of these headphones since they came out, and subsequent pairs each product generation. The first pair of these headphones that I own still works perfectly after almost 5 years of constant use. The sound quality on the new version is slightly better, most noticeably for the bass.
Cons: The material that is used for the ear pads degrades over time to give little black flakes that will end up all over your hands, face, and ears. They come off relatively easily, but it is still annoying to have to remove them.
Other Thoughts: Other than the degrading material on the ear pads, which took almost two years to start to fall off, I have no complaints with these headphones. If you ask for volume it will be there, and if you need more bass there are typically software (or hardware) equalizers that can give you the extra oumph you need. If you are looking at the other S-Brand of headphones, the H280's specifically, the MDR's sound quality is not quite as good. However the MDRs feel better when wearing them for extended periods of time, whereas the H280s feel like they can be crushing your head after a while. The H280s also need more break in time, but its really not that much in comparison to a decent pair of speakers. The MDRs will open up at around 50-70 hours and the H280s at around 80-100 . I hope my insights help you.

The best for double the price and less

Pros: I bought a pair in the 1980's. I bought them when they came out. That pair got stolen after a year but I got another right away. I suspect the originals made in Japan are better. I broke them twice but a little black PVC glue are they were as good as new. Unfortunately, the vacuum got the cord one day. I fixed them but they are not the same.

These are supper accurate. They do not bloat the bass and the detail is astonishing.

They are better broken-in. And I think they are better with the plastic on the pads warn off. That makes it so you can wear them 12 hours a day without your ears hurting and turning red. That weakens the bass a little but I don't care.

I have about 30,000 hours on mine...no exaggeration. They are that good.

I use an X-Fi card...the one with front inputs allowing the use of the larger connector and convenient volume adjustment.
Cons: They would have been better with bigger cups. I have connected ear lobes and they do not seal all the way around my ears. They should also be slightly deeper. There is also no way of making them press tighter to the head.

The small wires right near the speakers are vulnerable but so far they have survived.

The rubber is a little soft on the cord and it only takes a second for a demonic vacuum to gobble it up and chew it to shreds to your eternal dispair.

People will steal these...so hide them. They may not be so easy to replace after they are finally discontinued.
Other Thoughts: I think they are so good because they have thick metal cups. Plastic takes the crispness out of the sound. They are efficient enough to use with a walkman or Ipod. Some other full headphones take more energy to run well than little devises can manage. Sadly most devises cut the highs and lows so the phones can't show their stuff. Some older CD players from the 80's and 90's have better reproduction in the low notes. For high notes...good luck. You will probably need vinyl and a good stylus. Violins need the overtones to sound right but the audio format engineers don't seem to care.

they rock!

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: this is my first pair of cans, and I love them. I look down on any means of listening to music now. I'm an aspiring music snob!
Cons: I personally don't like the fact that they fold up. Maybe, if I traveled with them, I'd like that feature. When I go to take them off, they fold, when all I want to do is lay them on the desk.
Other Thoughts: try to get them on sale

A wonderful introduction to real sound

Tech Level Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
Pros: This is a great pair of headphones. I find them quite enjoyable for a variety of music covering everything from slow lounge music to RnB or Trance. They're incredibly balanced, offering very present bass, with it still being very articulate. The high-end, however, is where things get remarkable. The highs are better than anything I've heard before, and I have several pairs of headphones in the $100 to $250 range.

Everything comes through on these, and if these are your first real headphones, you will be astounded by the level of detail present. In this regard, they are quite nice for the price. If you don't mind a forward presentation, then they are very enjoyable.

The attenuation is decent, and is really all you're gonna get from closed headphones without active noise cancellation.
Cons: The sound-stage is not up to the level of my last headphones, and those were also closed cans. Basically, while you do get directional audio, and I can definitely place people in COD4 and CSS, but I don't get the same consistent placement that I can achieve with fore-mentioned pair. This isn't to say that they are bad or sub-par, only that they aren't exceptional. The pair I'm comparing them to is a best-in-class (under $200 closed headphones) for sound-stage.

Another con is that they are halfway between being circumaural and supra-aural. They go over and completely envelope your ear, only the pads are quite shallow, and the inner foam presses on your entire ear. This makes for a nice seal, but it gets uncomfortable after about an hour.

The pad is also a part that I am told wears out quickly. I plan on buying an upgraded pad from a third-party vendor, but they're alright for now
Other Thoughts: I bought them from a different store, and then a week later Newegg started stocking them at $5 bucks less, and with free S&H. Go Newegg!

My impressions are based on the headphones after about 30 hours burn in with white-noise, and probably close to 50 hours of music and games now.

Incredible value for pro-level headphones

Pros: There is a reason that if you ever see photos of people working in radio stations, they are almost universally wearing this headphone. These 'phones are incredibly transparent and perfect for music listening or production. They don't overpower the bass like many lesser cans will.
Cons: That I have to buy a new pair because my current ones have the cord and cups worn out after years of heavy use? :-)
Other Thoughts: The "Sony MDR7506 Professional" model is identical to this one aside from the "pro" sticker, the gold plating (useless), and the price.
